Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was on Vulture Peak near the city of Rajagriha, together with 1,250 bhikshus and 1,000 bodhisattvas practicing together, such as Bodhisattva Maitreya.
At that time the Buddha said to Sariputra:
"From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of one Ganges River, there is a world named Unconquerable. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Joyful Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of two Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Delight. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Moon-Banner King Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of three Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Joyful Love. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Equally Pervasive Radiance Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of four Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Inner Joy. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Discriminating, Surpassing, and Pure Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there. Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of five Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Without Doubt. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Equal Merit, Radiant Chief Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of six Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Without Poisonous Hostility. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Original Herb Tree Chief Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of seven Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Lotus Fragrance. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Surpassing Jewel Lotus Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Sariputra! From here, toward the east, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of eight Ganges Rivers, there is a world named Sweet Sound Proclaimed. In that land there is a Buddha, whose name is Jeweled Joy Lotus, Joyfully Abiding Tree King Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One, and he is now teaching the Dharma there.
Furthermore, Sariputra! The lands of these Buddhas, the Tathagatas, are all pure. There are no five turbidities there, no sensual desire, no women, no defiled minds, no curses or sorcery, and no discrimination.
Furthermore, Sariputra! If any good man or good woman hears these eight names of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, and receives, upholds, reads, and recites them, that person will never again fall into the three evil destinies, except for the five offenses of immediate retribution.
Furthermore, Sariputra! If any good man or good woman hears these eight names of these Buddhas together with the names of those lands, and then receives, upholds, reads, and recites them, by virtue of this merit, if that practitioner gives rise to the bodhi mind, then wherever they are born they will always attain dharani and will always possess auspicious marks. ... Because this good man or good woman reverently practices the teachings of the eight Buddhas, they will be caused to attain right conduct. When a woman relinquishes the body of karmic retribution in that place, she will be reborn in the body of a man.
Furthermore, Sariputra! If any good man or good woman, early in the morning, bathes, rinses the mouth clean, puts on pure garments, and throughout the six periods of day and night reverently upholds, reads, and recites the names of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, in this sutra, then that person will obtain immeasurable merit. Heavenly King Dhritarashtra will always protect this good man or good woman.
– If one is in the presence of officials, recite this sutra.
– If one encounters enemies, recite this sutra.
– If one encounters robbery, recite this sutra.
– If one encounters calamities of water or fire, recite this sutra.
– If one is amid the great sea and meets the terror of wind and waves, recite this sutra.
– If one is in battle amid an army formation, recite this sutra.
– If one hears the cry of an inauspicious bird, recite this sutra.
– If one has evil dreams, recite this sutra.
– If one is seized by dragon spirits, recite this sutra.
– If one is seized by hosts of demons and is so frightened that the hair stands on end, recite this sutra.
– If anyone is afflicted with a grave illness, epidemic disease, or painful sickness, and receives and upholds this Eight Yang Spirit-Mantra Sutra, that person will immediately be healed."
At that time the Buddha spoke these verses:
"Recite and recollect the Buddhas' names;
Receive and uphold the names of their lands.
All evils will be removed and destroyed,
And one will swiftly ascend to the Right Path.
Wherever born, one will always meet Buddhas;
Seeing the Buddhas, joy will arise.
The Honored Awakened One illumines the world;
Serve him with a mind of reverent sincerity.
For countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas,
One will never be separated from them.
One will swiftly arrive at the Path of Nirvana,
Because one upholds the names of the Buddhas.
The present Tathagatas:
Whoever reverently practices their teaching
Will be gentle, with a mind upright and true,
And in life after life will see the World-Honored One.
Upright and handsome, complete with auspicious marks,
For myriad lives one will be born wealthy and noble.
Courageous and fond of giving,
As a person one will not be miserly.
Women who hear this sutra
Will rejoice and give rise to joy.
They will leave behind the body of a woman
And be reborn as men.
Soldiers will not dare to harm them;
Poisonous spells and sudden calamities,
Officials and thieves,
Will be unable to harm such a person.
The five demons cannot disturb them;
Generals, commanders, and officials
Will be unable to take advantage of
One who upholds this sutra scripture."
Then Heavenly King Dhritarashtra, Maitreya, and the bodhisattvas said to the Buddha:
"World-Honored One! We shall all protect everyone who cultivates, studies, receives, and upholds this Eight Yang Spirit-Mantra Sutra. We shall join our strength together to protect the sick and cause them to recover from illness."
When the Buddha had finished speaking these words, Heavenly King Dhritarashtra, Maitreya and the bodhisattvas, the bhikshus, together with devas, dragons, ghosts and spirits, humans and asuras, having heard the Buddha's
teaching, all greatly rejoiced, bowed in homage, and withdrew.
