I bow my head in homage to the Great Mystery,Born from the Vajra of Loving-Kindness,Expounding this wondrous rite,A concise seal of ultimate truth.May the practitioner of yogaRaise the mind of benefit and blissFor all throughout the ten directions, without exception,Throughout every realm of sentient beings,And accomplish the nature of mantra,Reciting according to intention.湡 屹楠 伋丫 才柰亙瘑叨 伏亦Om (1), sarva yoga-citta (2), utpada yami.OMÏ SARVA YOGA-CITTAM UTPÀDA YAMI
Through merely arousing this mind,All obstacles are extinguished; One gains peace, joy, and satisfaction,And surpasses the hosts of Mara. One immediately becomes equal to the Tathagatas,And is worshiped by the world and the devas.Knowing that dharmas have no self-nature,One realizes the bodhi of ultimate truth.Contemplate within one’s own essenceThe mind of Samantabhadra, like the moon; The form of the body is empty and quiescent,From which a vajra appears,Five-pronged, shining pure white,Transforming into the form of VajrasattvaUpon a lotus dais, immaculate white,Crowned and adorned with the Five Buddhas,Clad in red, with a crimson radiance,Abiding within a perfect orb of light. The mantra and its own mudraAre established in due sequence. The worthy practitioner sits in the half-lotus posture,The left limb pressing upon the right foot.Having cast the wheel with the Wisdom Fist, the right fist,Place it against the chest.Hum is the heart mantra. The Samadhi Fist, the left fist, gently covers the groin. The vajras of body, speech, and mind:Do not allow the limbs to incline. Thus is formed the great mudra of the principal deity.
Next form the Vajra Palms,Raise and join them, crossing the fingertips. The secret words are uttered thus:向輈 介印Vajram jali.VAJRÀMÏ JALI
Then form the Vajra Bond. Its vidya is set forth as follows:向忝 向神Vajra bandha.VAJRA BANDHA
Open the Bond and strike the heart. One should recite this secret mantra:向忝 向神 氛誆Vajra bandha (1), trat (2).VAJRA BANDHA TRATÏ
Next form the preceding Vajra Bond.Separate Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, from Dana and Prajna, the two little fingers.Utter the Mantra of Universal Entry,Invoking descent and bestowing empowerment upon each:向忝 吒在 珆Vajra vesa (1), ah (2).VAJRA VE’SA (? AVI’SA) AHÏ
Without altering the preceding seal,Join Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, to Pragati and Bala, the two index fingers. This is the Samadhi Fist.Recite the mantra thus:向忝 觜泏 圳Vajra musti (1), vam (2).VAJRA MUSÏTÏI VAMÏ
Divide that fist into two;The left is held below, the right placed at the heart. The vajras of body, speech, and mindAssume the form of the initial visualization.Using the preceding Bond as the standard,Jnana, the left thumb, and Pragati, the right index finger, form a gate;Dhyana, the right thumb, enters therein.Seal the heart, forehead, throat, and crown,Reciting this mantra at each:鉏先凹 觠Surata stvam.SURATA STVAMÏ
Again form the Vajra Bond.Ksanti and Pranidhana, the two middle fingers, take the form of a blade;Pragati and Bala, the two index fingers, support the sides of its point,Following the first marking.Dhyana, the right thumb, presses upon the tip of Jnana, the left thumb. Thus seated in full lotus,Seal the crown and heart, contemplatingVairocana Buddha,Majestic and shining pure white.Recite this mantra:湡 嵽 廜Om, bhuh kham.OMÏ BHÙHÏ KHAMÏ
Next seal the foreheadAnd contemplate Aksobhya,Blue in color and abiding in front.Utter this secret vidya phrase:向忝屹玆Vajrasattva.VAJRASATVA
Next press the right side of the crown. This deity is named Ratnasambhava,Yellow in color and majestic in appearance.Recite the mantra thus:向忝先湓Vajra-ratna.VAJRA-RATNA
Raise it and place it behind the crown:The Tathagata Amitayus,Red in color and of extraordinary dignity.Utter this mantra:向忝叻猣Vajra-dharma.VAJRA-DHARMA
Again move to the left side of the crown:The deity Amoghasiddhi,Green in color, completing the circle of the Five Buddhas.Recite this secret vidya phrase:向忝一愍Vajra-karma.VAJRA-KARMA
Next form the Jeweled Garland Mudra,Using abhiseka to adorn the body. With both vajra hands,Bind it before the forehead; Then separate the fists behind the head,As though tying on a garland as before.Beginning with Dana and Prajna, the two little fingers, gradually open them,Lowering the hands along both sides.Contemplate them as trailing silk ribbons.Next recite this mantra:湡 向忝 交匠石趔弋 赩 圳Om (1), vajra mala abhisinca (2), mam (3), vam.OMÏ VAJRA MÀLA ABHISÏIMÏCA MÀMÏ VAMÏ
Extend both hands of Samadhi and Prajna.Together they accomplish the Clapping Seal,Which delights all the noble ones.Utter the mantra thus:向忝 加併 趌Vajra (1), tusya (2), hoh (3).VAJRA TUSÏYA HOHÏ
For the Vajra Arrogance Mudra and Vidya,Calm the mind and recite once:屹楹 乃冰 伏卡 鉏廜Sarvam kuru (1), yatha sukham.SARVAMÏ KURU YATHÀ SUKHAMÏ
Again complete the vidyas as aboveAnd crown Vajrasattva. With the bodily colors of the Five Buddhas,Abide in correspondence with their mudras. The universally illuminating Blessed One, Vairocana,Abides in the Tathagata Fist mudra.Next display Aksobhya:The Samadhi Hand, the left hand, holds the corner of the robe,Forms a fist and rests it upon the heart; The Prajna hand, the right hand, touches the earth according to the rite. For the boon-bestowing Ratnasambhava,The Wisdom Palm, the right palm, faces upward level with the breast. For the supreme mudra of Amitabha,The Samadhi Fist, the left fist, holds and covers the lotus,While the Prajna Fist, the right fist, opens the flower.Again, as with Aksobhya Buddha,The Wisdom Hand, the right hand, assumes the sign of three banners,As though rescuing sentient beings;Extend the palm beside the breast. This is the mudra of Amoghasiddhi.
Again form the Vajra Bond.Open the palms and join Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs.Dana and Prajna, the two little fingers, stand straight like mountain peaks.Ksanti and Pranidhana, the two middle fingers, enter the palmsAnd meet like the point of an arrow.Seal the heart, forehead, and throat,And likewise the crown of the head,Using at each the secret heart word:嫟Hum.HÙMÏ

With the Mudra Following the Mind of Great Bliss,
Form the seal and summon oneself.

Offer it at the forehead,Bathing the noble ones according to the rite.As before, contemplate the moon,Pure white and manifest within the mandala,At the place where the Great Noble One abides. The mudra rests in Vajra Arrogance.
Again arrange the stations of the four deities. The Eye and Arrow deity is in front,Red in color and clad in red garments,Adorned with a crown and garlands; Her two hands draw a bow and arrow,And she gazes reverently upon the Noble One.Next is the deity Kilikila,White in color and abiding on the right. Her two hands form Vajra Fists,Crossed in an embrace of samaya.Behind is the deity named Love,Whose form and garments are blue. With both fists, she raises the Prajna arm, the right arm,While her elbow supports the Samadhi Hand, the left hand;Together they hold a makara banner. On the left is the deity named Arrogance,Yellow in color, with her fists at the hips,Facing left and bowing her head slightly.Empower them and establish them in their stationsWith the karma mudras and mantras. For the Great Noble Vajra Arrogance,Recite the secret heart mantra:嫟Hum.HÙMÏ

Next display the other deities,
Again beginning with the Eye and Arrow.
Based upon the preceding protection of the body,
Form the Mudra Following the Mind of Great Bliss.
Strive to bend Pragati and Bala, the two index fingers,
With their upper portions touching back-to-back;
Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, press them together.
Thus the sign of the mudra is accomplished.
Place Dhyana, the right thumb, over Jnana, the left thumb,
Crossing them deeply; the mudra is then formed.
It is named Kilikila.

Next display the sign of the makara.
Pragati, the right index finger, hooks Pranidhana, the left middle finger;
Bala, the left index finger, is bent against the tip of Jnana, the left thumb.
Extend Sila and Upaya, the two ring fingers, like needles;
Join Dana and Prajna, the two little fingers, and raise them straight.
Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, press together,
Each resting beside Pragati and Bala, the two index fingers.
Thus the sign of the Love Seal is formed.
Without altering the preceding mudra,
From the seated posture touch the neck,
Doing likewise first on the left and right.

Again display the inner offerings.Turn the Vajra Palms obliquely.Casting them upward is the Flower Seal;Opening them downward forms Burning Incense.Press Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, to form the Lamp.Open the fragrant unguent from the chest. For Playful Joy, turn and bow.The Laughter Seal is held beside the mouth,Opening gradually from Dana and Prajna, the two little fingers.Again form the Song Seal.Modify Bala, the left index finger, bending it slightly,While Pragati, the right index finger, lightly plucks at the center. The Samadhi Hand, the left hand, forms the khatvanga,And Prajna, the right hand, assumes the sign of three banners.Turn them at the heart. Thus the eight offerings are complete.

Place Dhyana, the right thumb, between Jnana, the left thumb, and Bala, the left index finger.
When the seal is formed, again make the Lock.
Circle Pragati, the right index finger, around Dhyana, the right thumb, Jnana, the left thumb, and Bala, the left index finger.
After supporting them, hook them together.
Again form the Firm Bond.
Place Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, beneath Sila and Upaya, the two ring fingers,
Then shake them at the heart.
Forming the Bell completes the Four Means of Embrace.

At Vajrasattva’s stationAnd at the place where the practitioner dwells,There are sixteen deities in each,Abiding majestically in a surrounding circle. The King of Praises is set forth belowAnd should be recited:屹楠 平全丫 鉏几 屹摓巧屹 畚 向忝屹玆 扔先休 鉏先半 矛向 伙 亙成鉏几 呠玉 奫伏叭 盲凸扔改 帆貄 弋匡 摞盲仕半Sarvanuraga sukha satmana (1), tvam Vajrasattva paramah suratah (2), bhava me, mahasukha drdho cchaya dah (3), pratipadya siddhya cala ghu pranatah (4).SARVANURÀGA ( ? Through this Vajra Song,Great Bliss accords with every delight; The mind is satisfied and made steadfast,And one’s wishes will be accomplished.Again recite the following,The most excellent praise of truth. MAHÀVAJRA) MAHADHANA (? MAHÀDHÀNA) MAHAJNÕÀNA (? MAHÀJNÕÀNA) MAPHAKARMMA (? MAHÀKARMA) VAJRASATVADYA SIDDHYA MI
Next display the sign of the Eye Mudra,Beginning with the Great Noble One.Visualize and behold the others,Distinguishing the names of their mudras. The practitioner should again employThe deity Vajra Eye,Vajra Great Delight,And the Amogha Awakening Mudra.Contemplate the side of VajrasattvaWhile arousing the mind of great passion.Through empowerment by this mudra,Accomplishment will swiftly be attained.
The Prajna hand, the right hand, assumes the sign of three banners; The Samadhi Hand, the left hand, forms the khatvanga. As before, dance at one’s heart,Then assume the posture of casting flowers.Half-open the eyes and smile,Gazing upon the principal deity. This is Vajra Great Satisfaction,The sign of the Amogha Arrow Mudra. The wisdom of the essential nature of the dharmadhatuCan thereby be maintained.
With the gaze of Great Delight,Contemplate the principal deity and the face of the Noble One.Through the gazing mudra of Great Delight,Even a person of little merit attains accomplishment. With swift aspiration and a fierce countenance,Empower the Great Accomplishment. One should further cause it to be directly realized,Surpassing the paths of non-Buddhists.
For Vajra Great Delight,The Mudra Adorned with Standards and Banners,Raise the pupils and glance sideways. The Samadhi hand, the left hand, forms the khatvanga; The Prajna hand, the right hand, forms the three banners. As before, assume the sign of turning and dancing,And also the posture of casting flowers. When the Arrow is honored, the mudra is complete. The devas and humans of the three realmsWill respectfully make offerings.
Next perform the five preceding modes of gazing. For the principal deity, use the syllable Hum as the vidya. For Aspiration and Arrogance Mudras,And for the remaining karma mudras,Recite their mantra phrases,Without differing from what was given before.
At the place where the body of the Great Noble One is formed,There is the wisdom of the essential nature of the dharmadhatu. As before, gaze with passionate attachment;Make the quiescence of nirvana turn its gaze.Again open the eyes slightly,And let the eyelids move as one gazes. This is called the written vidya-gaze.Use it to invite the principal deityTo enter and pervade one’s entire body.Contemplate body and mind as filled with loving passion,Serving the Noble One.Through the power of the mudra, the seal, and the mantra,Their self-natures are all known and realized.Vajrasattva abides through this. Now, by cultivating this skillful means,I shall attain accomplishment.
Following the teaching, perform the cycle of offerings.Next employ the Expelling Mudra,Named the Samaya of the Vajra Blazing Sun.Interlace both hands inwardly. The eight fingers rest against the palms.Extend Dhyana and Jnana, the two thumbs, and join their faces;Like a pestle, they form a Hollow Fist.Turning it to the left expels maras;Turning it to the right establishes the boundary everywhere.Sound Hum like a clap of thunder,And establish protection as desired.
With resolute understanding, contemplateThroughout the entire realm of spaceFragrant unguents, lamps, food and drink,Garlands and burning incense,Clothing, parasols, standards and banners,Fans, whisks, songs, and jeweled handbells,Wondrous dances and palaces—Supreme offerings according to the rite. Now I conjure them into being,And the assembly of noble ones receives and enjoys them.As with the preceding syllable Om,Recite and form the visualization.Without blinking, smile brightly,Abiding steadfastly in loving delight.Long contemplate the body of the Noble One,And the eyes become Vajra Eyes.

If one upholds this King of Praises,Reciting these words of the Vajra Dharma,One will accomplish every delightSwiftly and without hindrance. Each day it should be promptly recited.Having uttered it, one is freed from offensesAnd forever delivered from all suffering; The Pure Land will appear before one.Merely reciting it perfects all meritAnd increases blazing auspiciousness.
Again display the Arghya Seal.Incline the mudra over the mouth of the vessel,And the hand should incline accordingly.Contemplate making homage and utter the syllable Om.Present the offering according to the ritual ruleAnd recite its root mantra.Having made the aspiration, immediately formThe Vajra Blazing Sun.Again form the Firm Bond.Raise Ksanti and Pranidhana, the two middle fingers, like a needle. At the level of the heart, recite this vidya:湡 邟榽 屹益屹班飲 帆盎僅枲 伏卡毛丸丫猌嵼 后湀合好兇 旦巧全丫亙巧伏加 湡 向忝屹玆 鄖Om (1), krtovah (2), sarvasattvartha (3), siddhir datta (4), yatha anugagacchatham (5), buddhavisayam (6), punaragamanayatu (7), om (8), vajra (9), sattva, muh (10).OMÏ KRÏTOVÀHÏ , SADDHASATVÀRTHA (? SARVASATVA ARTHA ) SIDDHIRDATTÀ YATHA ANUGÀGACCHATHAMÏ BUDDHAVISÏAYAMÏ PUNARÀGAMANAYATU _ OMÏ VAJRASATVA MUHÏ

Having finished the phrase, bring the mudra to the forehead.
Beginning from the Peak, the joined fingertips, open it gradually,
Contemplating the assembly of noble ones returning to their palaces.
Protect the body as desired.

The practitioner who seeks attainment should first,
During the four periods, enter the place of enlightenment
And recite a full one hundred thousand times.
Thereafter, uphold and recollect it day and night.
The deities will protect and assist,
Further increasing diligent practice.

Again is expounded the gateway of recitation,To be cultivated in the four deportments. As before, aspire to rescueEvery realm of sentient beings without exception. Also recite what was first set forth:The secret words of the bodhi-mind.Again utter the syllable A.Through the gateway of wondrous delight,Understand that all dharmas are unborn. As at the beginning, abide in the contemplation of emptiness.A five-pronged vajra appears within the perfect orb of light,And from it one’s own body is accomplished,Like the youthful and majestic form of Vajrasattva.Visualize it with perfect clarity.Sit in half-lotus, the right pressing upon the left. Then join the Vajra Palms.Again display the Firm Bond,The Opening of the Heart and Universal Entry Mudras,And likewise the Samadhi Fist.Turn the Vajra Arrogance Mudra.Seal the precious crown of the Five Buddhas,Tie the garland, and let the ribbons hang.Empower it and clap the hands. The Samadhi Seal guards and sustains.Again use this mudra to invite the deityTo descend into one’s own body. The eight offerings gather like cloudsAnd are established as before.
All are based upon great emptiness.Arrange their stations and contemplate them.Having clearly arrayed them,Display the Vajra Arrogance Seal. For the offerings to the other deities,Use each of their karma mudras. Here only the names of the seals are indicated;Their signs were already presented above.Recite each root mantraWhile mentally forming the offerings.Contemplate the color of the body as empty,And truly behold the principal deity. In accordance with this resolute understanding,Remain certain and free of doubt.Through causes and conditions, the kinds of sentient beingsAwaken to the fact that their root is entirely empty.Whenever encountering adorned objectsOf distinctive and pleasing kinds,Dissolve them and contemplate them all as empty; Then establish them anew.Having made them all pure,Contemplate offering them to the principal deity,Together with the vidya-syllable Om,To be enjoyed in the same way as Samantabhadra.
Again display the preliminary practiceAnd cultivate it wherever appropriate. When the count has reached a full one hundred thousand,Recite day and night as before. If one practices single-mindedly for one month,Two months, or half a month,A sign of attainment will appear before one,And whatever is sought will be accomplished at will. One swiftly ascends to the station of a Buddha’s lineage.Having placed faith in the bodhisattvaAnd the principal deity, within this very bodyOne will certainly attain direct realization.Though one’s obstacles are heavy and one is indolent,One will swiftly attain it in this very life. This wondrous gateway of Great BlissShould be honored and upheld by the worthy practitioner.
