At that time, the Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies rose from his seat in the great assembly of Vairocana Buddha, respectfully joined his palms, and addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! For sentient beings in the evil destinies of the defiled world during the future Dharma-ending age, I teach the dharani for extinguishing offenses and attaining Buddhahood, whereby they cultivate the gate of the Three Mysteries, realize the Samadhi of Recollection of the Buddha, and attain rebirth in the Pure Land. By what skillful means may sentient beings burdened by grave offenses be rescued from suffering and given happiness? I wish to relieve all sentient beings of their afflictions.”

The Buddha then told the Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies: “For sentient beings who know neither repentance nor shame, who hold wrong views and behave heedlessly, there is no Dharma by which they may be rescued. While alive, they undergo manifold hardships; after death, they fall into the Avici Hell. They cannot even hear the name of the Three Jewels, much less see a Buddha. How, then, could they obtain a human body?”

The Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies again addressed the Buddha: “The Tathagata’s skillful means are immeasurable, and his spiritual powers are inexhaustible. I pray that the World-Honored One teach a secret Dharma to rescue beings from suffering. The Buddha is the father and mother of all sentient beings. Please teach sentient beings in the world of the five defilements the Dharma by which Buddhahood is assured.”

The Buddha told the Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies: “I possess a secret Dharma, exceedingly rare in the world, the foremost and most excellent Dharma for extinguishing offenses and attaining Buddhahood. It is called the Wish-Fulfilling Mantra of Immediate Attainment. If someone merely hears the title of this mantra for the first time, approaches a person who recites its title, or stays in the same place as one who recites its title, all heavenly maras, evil spirits, and benevolent spirit-kings will come to protect that person.

Even if that person eats the five pungent plants, meat, or fish, or engages in sexual misconduct with sisters, any women, or female animals, the Vinayakas will still be unable to create obstacles. Instead, they will all comply with and protect that person day and night, eliminating calamities and bringing peace and security—how much more so if one personally recites it.

“If one recites it in full, all grave offenses are extinguished and immeasurable merit is acquired. At death, one will certainly be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. Even one who has committed extremely grave offenses will not fall into hell.

Though one has killed one’s father or mother, killed an arhat, disrupted the harmony of the Sangha, shed the blood of a Buddha, burned sutras or sacred images, defiled a monastery, slandered others, disparaged the teachings, praised oneself and disparaged others—even after committing such offenses, one will assuredly be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, attain the highest grade of rebirth, and be born by transformation within a lotus, never again being born from a womb.

Those who attain Buddhahood swiftly do so because they heard this mantra in the past; those who attain Buddhahood slowly do so because, life after life, they have not heard it.

“If a man, woman, boy, or girl upholds the title of this mantra, that person will enjoy peace and happiness, be free of illness, possess a strong and healthy appearance, have perfect auspiciousness, and attain accomplishment in every mantra Dharma. If the title of this mantra, or one phrase, two phrases, up to ten phrases, or one complete recitation of the mantra, is placed within jade, gold, silver, or vaidurya and worn around the neck or upon the head, then although that person has not entered a mandala, that person immediately becomes one who has entered every mandala, a fellow practitioner of all who have entered the mandala, and the equal of the Buddhas, without distinction.

That person will have no evil dreams, and grave offenses will be extinguished. If anyone with malicious intent approaches that person, no harm can be done, and all undertakings will be accomplished.”

The Buddha then spoke the Universally Pervading, Blazing, Perfect, Pure, Flourishing, Contemplative Jewel-Seal Heart, Invincible, All-Retaining Great Wish-Fulfilling Dharani:

This mantra is truly the fundamental wisdom of innumerable hundreds of millions of Buddhas, as countless as the sands of the Ganges. Immeasurable Buddhas issue forth from this mantra, and Buddhas attain the Way by upholding it. Thus, throughout innumerable myriads of kotis of kalpas, the Buddhas of the three times—and Vairocana Tathagata within the wisdom of the dharmadhatu—sought it for countless kalpas before obtaining it.

Therefore, it is called the Wish-Fulfilling Mantra of Immediate Attainment. No Buddha can attain Buddhahood without obtaining this mantra. Followers of non-Buddhist paths and Brahmins who obtain this mantra will swiftly attain Buddhahood.

Why is this? Long ago, in the kingdom of Magadha, there was a Brahmin named Cu-bát. He had never seen a Buddha, heard the Dharma, cultivated the six paramitas, or abided in the four immeasurable minds.

Every day he killed pigs, goats, bears, deer, geese, chickens, and turtles for food—regularly taking from fifty to one hundred lives each day. After 250 years, this Brahmin died, departed the human world, and went to the palace of King Yama. King Yama then asked Shakra: “Into which hell should this offender be sent?

How grave are his offenses?” Shakra replied: “This man’s offenses are immeasurable and incalculable. His record of good deeds contains not a single wholesome act, while his record of evil is too extensive to count. Quickly confine him in the Avici Hell.”

The jailers immediately cast the offender into hell. At once, the hell spontaneously transformed into a lotus pond filled with water possessing the eight virtues. Within it were lotuses of every kind—blue, white, crimson, and purple, all brilliantly colored. Upon each lotus was a seat for an offender, and none of them experienced any suffering. At that moment, King Yama’s ox-headed and horse-headed jailers said to one another: “How extraordinary this hell is! This offender must have been arrested by mistake! The hell has become a pure land, and the offenders are no different from Buddhas! Such is what we have seen and heard.”

King Yama then went to Shakra’s palace and said: “This Cu-bát is not a guilty man,” recounting the miraculous transformation described above.

Shakra replied: “While alive, he never performed even a single wholesome deed as small as a mote of dust. I cannot understand this. Go to the Buddha realm and ask Shakyamuni Buddha what virtue Cu-bát possessed that could produce such a miraculous transformation.”

The Buddha then told Shakra: “During his lifetime, Cu-bát never performed a single wholesome deed. Go and see what has become of his remains in the human world.”

Shakra immediately went to Cu-bát’s burial place and saw a stupa one mile west of it. This fundamental mantra had been placed within the stupa. Because the ancient stupa had decayed, written characters of the mantra had fallen to the ground. One character was carried by the wind and adhered to Cu-bát’s remains. Shakra then ordered that Cu-bát be transferred successively through eight other hells. Whenever Cu-bát was moved to a hell, that place immediately became free from suffering. At that time, Cu-bát and all the offenders fully acquired the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics, and simultaneously became Buddhas and bodhisattvas in the Lotus-Dais Treasury World. In the Stainless World above, Cu-bát attained Buddhahood and was named the Buddha Cu-bát.

Such is this mantra’s power to extinguish offenses—how much more so when one personally upholds and recites it. If one recites it with utmost sincerity, what trace of offense could remain? Therefore, this mantra is also named Sovereign Immediate Attainment of Buddhahood According to One’s Wishes, Sovereign Seeking of Merit, and Sovereign Seeking of the Seven Treasures. Thus, this mantra has seven names:

1- The Buddha-Mind Heart Mantra: the wisdom-mind within the mind of wisdom of Vairocana Tathagata.

2- The Seal of the Minds of All Buddhas Mantra: the exceedingly profound wisdom-mind seal of all Buddhas.

3- The Anointing Mantra: it anoints those who uphold and recite it.

4- The Anointing-Seal Mantra: the bodhi seal that washes away afflictions.

5- The Boundary-Establishing Mantra: it removes karmic obstructions and expels all maras.

6- The Buddha-Mind Mantra: the Buddha’s true wisdom-mind.

7- The Inner-Heart Mantra: no Dharma surpasses this Dharma.

Those who uphold and recite it are likewise comparable to the Buddha, the foremost and highest among all Dharma Kings.

“O Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies! This mantra can rescue all sentient beings. It can enable all sentient beings to leave every affliction and can bestow great benefit upon them, fulfilling their aspirations.

Just as the Buddha can rescue all suffering sentient beings; as one who is cold finds a warming fire; as one who is naked obtains clothing; as a lost child finds its mother; as one crossing a ford finds a boat; as the sick obtain medicine; as a dark place receives a bright lamp; as the poor obtain treasure; and as a blazing torch dispels darkness—so too is this mantra. It can enable sentient beings to leave all suffering and every affliction of illness and can loosen every bond of birth and death.

It is excellent medicine for the sick in Jambudvipa. If a sick person hears this mantra, the illness is immediately extinguished.

“If a good man or faithful woman hears this mantra even briefly, all existing karmic offenses and obstructions will be extinguished. Even one who has engaged in sexual misconduct with any woman will nevertheless not undergo the suffering of womb birth. Why? Because through approaching and making offerings to one who upholds the mantra, such men and women are as though assisting the Buddha’s own body.

“If anyone can uphold and recite it, know that this person has a vajra body, which fire cannot burn. Know that the Tathagata protects this person through his spiritual power. Know that this person is the body of the Tathagata, the body of Vairocana Tathagata. Know that this person is the tathagatagarbha and the eye of the Tathagata. Know that this person wears vajra armor. Know that this person has a body of radiant light. Know that this person has an indestructible body. Know that this person can subdue all enemies. Know that all this person’s karmic offenses and obstructions are entirely extinguished. Know that this mantra can remove the sufferings of hell.

“For the sake of the Buddha Way, throughout immeasurable realms and since time immemorial, I have expounded immeasurable Dharmas; yet this mantra is foremost and supreme, beyond all comparison. Throughout the trichiliocosm, even though sentient beings commit killing, they will not fall into the evil destinies. This is entirely due to the awesome power of this mantra—how much less would they have to suffer calamities in the human world? It continually causes a rain of the seven treasures to descend; there will be no illness or disaster, every wish will be fulfilled, body and mind will be peaceful and secure, and merit and longevity will be immeasurable.

“O Extinguishing Evil Destinies, below are seven short mantras. Those unable to recite the fundamental mantra should recite these. If young men or women are unable to uphold the Great Mantra, they may uphold these mantras according to their capacity.

The Buddha told the Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies: “This mantra is called the Wish-Fulfilling Mantra of Immediate Attainment. It can remove all karmic offenses and obstructions and destroy all suffering of the defiled evil paths. Extinguishing Evil Destinies!

This mantra was jointly proclaimed by innumerable hundreds of thousands of kotis of Buddhas, as countless as the sands of the Ganges. Those who rejoice in and uphold it will be sealed by the Tathagata with the Wisdom Seal. It can destroy the defiled evil paths of all sentient beings and swiftly rescue them from calamity and suffering, liberating those sinking in the ocean of birth and death.

It was proclaimed for short-lived sentient beings of little merit who have no protector, and for sentient beings who delight in creating all manner of evil karma.

“Furthermore, this mantra enables every kind of sentient being suffering in any place—whether in hell, in an evil destiny, or wandering through the ocean of birth and death; beings of little merit; and unbelievers who have lost the right path—to attain liberation.”

The Buddha then told the Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies: “I now entrust this mantra to you. Use its awesome power to liberate all sentient beings from the ocean of suffering. Extinguishing Evil Destinies!

You should uphold and recite it, contemplate it, practice it, and protect it; do not allow it to be forgotten. Extinguishing Evil Destinies! If someone hears this mantra for even a moment, then all the grave evil karma and obstructions accumulated over the past thousand kalpas—by which that person should undergo every form of birth and death, wandering through the hells, the realms of hungry ghosts and animals, the domain of King Yama, or taking the bodies of asuras, yakshas, rakshasas, ghosts, spirits, putanas, apasmaras, mosquitoes and gnats, nagas, snakes, turtles, dogs, pythons, serpents, every kind of bird and ferocious beast, all living creatures that wriggle and move, even worms and ants—will never again be undergone.

That person will immediately be reborn in the presence of the Buddhas and Tathagatas’ bodhisattvas in their final existence, amid assemblies of bodhisattvas; or in a great Brahmin family, a great kshatriya family, or an exceptionally wealthy and noble family.

“Extinguishing Evil Destinies! This person is born in such honored circumstances entirely because of having heard this mantra. Therefore, wherever that person is reborn will be pure, and there will be no retrogression.

“Extinguishing Evil Destinies! Even attainment of the most excellent bodhi seat of enlightenment comes from praising the merit of this mantra. For this reason, it is called the Wish-Fulfilling Mantra of Immediate Attainment.

“Next, the secret mudras are explained:

Secretly contemplate the Five Tathagatas.

First, place the mudra upon the heart;

Next, set it upon the crown of the head;

Then place it upon the forehead, between the brows;

Next, upon the two eyebrows on either side—

Right first, left afterward—and it is complete.

When this mudra has been formed, my body becomes Universal Illumination.

Contemplate the vajra upon the tongue.

First, join the palms in the Vajra Palm;

It immediately becomes the Vajra Bond.

Patience and Vow are shaped like sharpened points;

Advance and Power rest against their backs.

Patience and Vow stand like a bowl,

Bent backward into the shape of a jewel,

Slightly curved like a lotus,

Their faces joined within the palms.

Dana and Wisdom, Dhyana and Knowledge are joined;

Thus is formed the secret mudra.

These five secret mudras

Are the hidden within the hidden,

The secret within the secret.

They must not be transmitted by one who is not an A—

That is, one who is not an acharya may not transmit them.

If the acharya knows them,

He teaches Dharma disciples as appropriate.

Thus should that Dharma mandala be made,

According to the Lotus Sutra ritual manual (this cannot be explained here).”

The Buddha then told the Bodhisattva Extinguishing Evil Destinies: “Listen attentively! I shall explain this for you. The upholding of this mantra is also taught for short-lived sentient beings. They should bathe, put on clean new robes, and recite it nine times each day. Those short-lived beings will then gain increased longevity and forever leave the suffering of illness. All karmic obstructions will be extinguished, and they will be liberated from the suffering of every hell. If birds in flight, running beasts, or any living creature hears this mantra but once, then when its present body ends, it will never again assume such a body.

“If one afflicted by a grave illness hears this mantra, that person will forever be freed from it. All other illnesses will also be extinguished. Karma that would cause descent into evil destinies will likewise be destroyed, and that person will immediately attain rebirth in the World of Tranquility. No longer born from a womb, that person will be born by transformation within a lotus. In every place of birth, that person will be lotus-born by transformation. Wherever born, that person will remember without forgetting and always know former lives.

“If someone previously committed every kind of extremely grave offense and, in accordance with that evil karma, should fall into hell, the animal realm, the domain of King Yama, the realm of hungry ghosts, or even the great Avici Hell; or should be born among aquatic creatures or assume the bodies of strange birds and beasts—if that person hears the title of this mantra, even a single syllable merely once, that person will not undergo the sufferings of any such realm. All karmic obstructions will be extinguished, and that person will swiftly be reborn in a Buddha realm.

“If someone approaches a person who recites even one syllable, that person will attain great nirvana, gain increased longevity, and experience supreme happiness. Upon relinquishing this body, that person will immediately attain rebirth in wondrous pure lands and constantly assemble together with the Buddhas. All Tathagatas will continually expound the sublime and wondrous meaning for that person.

All World-Honored Ones will immediately bestow a prediction of enlightenment upon that person. That person’s body will radiate light illuminating every Buddha realm. I have now only briefly described the power of this mantra.

If good men and faithful women do not give rise to doubt concerning the mantra from thought to thought, they will gain its efficacy. If those good men and faithful women allow doubt to arise, life after life they will not obtain the mantra’s efficacy, and in this life they will suffer from leukoderma, ringworm, or leprosy.

“For the benefit of sentient beings, I have taught this mantra. For poor and lowly sentient beings, I leave behind this wish-fulfilling mani jewel. It is the exceedingly profound Wisdom Seal and Dharma treasury of Vairocana Tathagata. One should revere those who constantly uphold and recite it just as one reveres the Buddha.”
