According to the Vajrasekhara Yoga Sutra, I shall explain the practice of the Vajra Body, Speech, and Mind of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of the Lotus Family.
The practitioner should seek from a yoga acarya the precepts and ritual discipline of bodhicitta, enter the Great Mandala and receive abhiseka, abide on the Stage of Resolute Practice, relinquish body, life, and possessions, advance courageously and diligently, bear a compassionate heart, not grow weary of samsara, resolve to realize the body of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, attend upon all Buddhas, delight in cultivating the prajnaparamita of ultimate meaning, perfect loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, and benefit sentient beings.
One may practice in a secluded, excellent place in the mountains, in a pure monastery, or before a stupa containing relics. Prepare a pure chamber, plaster and anoint the mandala ground, hang banners around it, and suspend a canopy above. On the western side of the altar, place an image of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
The reciter should sit on the eastern side of the altar, facing the image, upon a seat of spread kusa grass or a small, low stool. Arrange the mandala upon the altar, setting out in rows the stations of the noble ones. Place two argha vessels filled with scented water, and at the four corners of the altar place four auspicious vases.
Each day, scatter various seasonal flowers over the altar. Consecrate incense for burning, scented ointment, lamps, food, drink, fruits, and the like, then arrange them on the four sides as offerings.
Whenever entering the place of practice, sincerely prostrate, declare repentance, rejoice in merit, arouse diligence, dedicate merit, and make vows. Then mentally contemplate all Tathagatas filling the whole of space, complete with every excellent mark, each entering the samadhi of the dharmadhatu. Further contemplate oneself abiding within the Buddha’s oceanic assembly. Then form the Mudra That Awakens All Tathagatas. With both hands form Vajra Fists; hook the Dana and Prajna fingers together—the two little fingers—and extend the two Bala and Upaya fingers—the index fingers—straight, supporting each other obliquely. Recite the mantra and present the mudra three times. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật lỗ để sắt-xá”
OMÏ VAJRA TISÏTÏA HÙMÏ
By forming this mudra and reciting the Awakening Mantra, all Tathagatas emerge from samadhi. The mantra practitioner should reflect and address the Buddhas, saying: “My body possesses little merit and little wisdom and is submerged in the ocean of suffering. I now rely upon the majestic spiritual power of the Buddhas. I pray that the Buddhas will not forsake their original vow of great compassion, but will graciously show loving compassion, regard and protect me, and rescue me.”
All those Tathagatas then bestow empowerment, protection, and mindfulness through their spiritual power. The yoga practitioner acquires immeasurable merit and gains mastery of body and mind.
_ Next, pay homage to the Tathagatas of the four directions and request their empowering protection. First, pay homage to all the Tathagatas of the family of Aksobhya Tathagata in the east. The yoga practitioner should prostrate with the entire body touching the ground, form the Vajra Joined Palms, extend them above the crown of the head, place the heart against the ground, and make sincere and reverent homage. The mantra is:
“ÁN – Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – Bố nha bạt sa-tha nẵng dạ đa-ma nam – Nãnh lý-dã đa, dạ ninh – Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – phộc nhật-la tát đát phộc địa sắt-xá, sa-phộc hàm – hồng”
OMÏ - SARVA TATHÀGATA PÙJA PASVÀNÀYA ATMÀNÀMÏ NIRÙATA YÀMI - SARVA TATHÀGATA VAJRASATVA ADBISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ- HÙMÏ
By forming the Mudra of Offering the Body and reciting the mantra, one presents offerings and makes reverent homage. Through this act of homage, until attaining Buddhahood, the yoga practitioner will continually receive the empowerment of Vajrasattva, causing bodhicitta to become perfect.
_ Next, pay homage to all the Tathagatas of the family of Ratnasambhava Tathagata in the south. As before, extend the body upon the ground, form the Vajra Joined Palms and bring them down to the heart, place the forehead against the ground, and make sincere and reverent homage. The mantra is:
“ÁN – tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – Bố nhạ tị lệ ca dạ đa-ma nam – Nãnh lý-dã đa, dạ minh – Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – phộc nhật la, la đát-nẵng tị tiễn tả, sa phộc hàm – Đát-lạc”
OMÏ – SARVA TATHÀGATA PÙJA ABHISÏEKÀYA ATMÀNÀMÏ NIRYÀTA YÀMI – SARVA TATHÀGATA VAJRA RATNA ABHISIMÏCA SVÀMAMÏ - TRAHÏ
By forming the Mudra of Offering the Body and reciting the mantra, one presents offerings and makes reverent homage. Until reaching the stage of Buddhahood, the yoga practitioner will continually receive abhiseka from Akasagarbha Bodhisattva on every stage, perfect merit and virtue, become endowed with all excellent marks, and always be a Dharma King of the three realms.
_ Next, pay homage to all the Tathagatas of the family of Amitayus Tathagata in the west. As before, form the Vajra Joined Palms and place them upon the crown of the head, touch the mouth to the ground, and make sincere and reverent homage.
“ÁN – Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – bộ nhạ bát-la mâu đát nẵng dạ đa-ma nam – Nãnh lý dã đa, dạ minh – Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – phộc nhật-la đạt ma, bát la mâu đát dã, sa phộc hàm – Hật lị”
OMÏ - SARVA TATHÀGATA PÙJA PRAVARTTANÀYA ATMÀNÀMÏ NIRỲATA YÀMI - SARVA TATHÀGATA VAJRA DHARMA PRAVARTTÀYA SVÀMÀMÏ - HRÌHÏ
By forming the Mudra of Offering the Body and reciting the mantra, one presents offerings and makes reverent homage. Until attaining Buddhahood, one will continually receive the empowerment of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, attain perfect wisdom, and turn the wheel of the wondrous Dharma.
_ Next, pay homage to all the Tathagatas of the family of Amoghasiddhi Tathagata in the north. As before, extend the body, form the Vajra Joined Palms and place them at the heart, touch the crown of the head to the ground, and make sincere and reverent homage. The mantra is:
“ÁN - Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – Bố nhạ yết ma nê, a đa-ma nam – Nãnh lý-dã đa, dạ minh – tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa – phộc nhật-la yết ma cự lỗ, sa-phộc hàm – Ác”
OMÏ – SARVA TATHÀGATA PÙJA KARMANÏI ATMÀNÀMÏ NIRYÀTA YÀMI - SARVA TATHÀGATA VAJRA KARMA KURU SVÀMAMÏ – AHÏ
By forming the Mudra of Offering the Body and reciting the mantra, one presents offerings and makes reverent homage. Until attaining Buddhahood, one will continually receive the empowerment of Vajrakarma Bodhisattva and accomplish the vast activity of offering throughout the worlds of all Buddhas.
Afterward, sit in the full lotus posture, straighten the body, establish right mindfulness, keep the limbs motionless, leave the eyes slightly open, and quietly enter the contemplation of the four immeasurable minds. Then form the Samadhi Mudra.
First, enter the Samadhi of Immeasurable Loving-Kindness. With a pure and earnest mind, universally take as objects all sentient beings of the four modes of birth in the six paths. All are endowed with the tathagatagarbha and inherently possess the three Vajras of body, speech, and mind. Through the meritorious power of my cultivation of the Three Mysteries, may all sentient beings become equal to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Having contemplated thus, recite the Mantra of the Samadhi of Great Loving-Kindness:
“Án – Ma hạ muội đát-la-dạ, sa-phả la”
OMÏ MAHÀ MAITRÌYA SPHARA
Next, enter the Samadhi-Wisdom of Immeasurable Compassion. With a compassionate mind, universally take as objects all sentient beings of the four modes of birth in the six paths, who are submerged in the ocean of the sufferings of birth and death. Because they do not awaken to their own minds, they falsely produce discriminations and give rise to every kind of primary and secondary affliction; therefore, they cannot comprehend true suchness, which is equal to space and possesses merits exceeding the sands of the Ganges. Through the empowering power of my cultivation of the Three Mysteries, may all sentient beings become equal to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva. Having contemplated thus, recite the Mantra of the Samadhi of Great Compassion:
“ÁN – Ma hạ ca lỗ noa dạ, sa-phả la”
OMÏ – MAHÀ KÀRUNÏÀYA SPHARA
Next, enter the Samadhi-Wisdom of Immeasurable Joy. With a pure mind, universally take as objects all sentient beings of the four modes of birth in the six paths, who have been pure from the beginning, like a lotus whose intrinsic nature is pure and undefiled by dust. Through the meritorious power of my cultivation of the Three Mysteries, may all sentient beings become equal to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Having contemplated thus, recite the Mantra of the Samadhi of Great Joy:
“ÁN – Truật đà bát-la mô ná, sa-phả la”
OMÏ – ‘SUDDHA PRAMODA SOHARA
Next, enter the Samadhi-Wisdom of Immeasurable Equanimity. With an impartial mind, universally take as objects all sentient beings of the four modes of birth in the six paths, all of whom are apart from self and what belongs to self. They are apart from the skandhas and dhatus and apart from apprehender and apprehended. Within the equality of dharmas, they are originally unborn, and their nature and characteristics are originally empty (‘sùnya—void). Through the meritorious power of my cultivation of the Three Mysteries, may all sentient beings become equal to Akasagarja Bodhisattva. Having contemplated thus, recite the Mantra of the Samadhi of Great Equanimity:
“ÁN – Ma hộ bệ khất-sái, sa-phả la”
OMÏ - MAHÀ UPEKSÏA SPHARA
Because the yogin cultivates the samadhis of the four immeasurable minds and recites their four mantras, henceforth every kind of demonic activity, karmic obstruction, and adversity caused by humans, devas, and others will be completely eliminated. An immeasurable accumulation of merit will gather within the body. The mind will become gentle, patient, and masterful.
Next, form the Vajra Joined Palms Mudra. Interlace the ten fingers, with the right over the left. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la nhạ ly”
OMÏ VAJRA JALI
By forming the Vajra Joined Palms Mudra, one will swiftly perfect the paramitas and attain the ten masteries.
Next, form the Vajra Bond Mudra. From the preceding mudra, interlace the ten fingers outwardly and close them into a fist. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la mãn đà”
OMÏ VAJRA BANDHA
By forming the Vajra Bond Mudra, the yogin will swiftly fulfill the ten bodhisattva stages.
Next, form the Vajra Bond Mudra That Crushes the Ten Kinds of Obstructions. Form the Vajra Bond Mudra as before, then strike the heart three times with the mudra. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la mãn đ2, đát-la tra”
OMÏ VAJRA BANDHA TRATÏ
By forming this mudra, one can crush the ten kinds of obstructive delusion within the mind, and the Vajra Body, Speech, and Mind will immediately become manifest and flourish.
Next, form the Vajra Pervading-Entry Mudra. Begin with the preceding Vajra Bond Mudra. Bend the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs—into the palms, each touching the Dhatu and Dik fingers—the two ring fingers—then place the mudra upon the heart. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la, phệ xả, ác”
OMÏ VAJRA AVI’SA AHÏ
By forming this mudra, the Three Vajra Mysteries within the yogin’s body are all rendered compliant and are empowered without loss.
Next, form the Samaya Vajra Fist Mudra. Begin with the preceding Vajra Pervading-Entry Mudra. Bend the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—to grasp the backs of the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la mẫu sắt-trí, noan”
OMÏ VAJRA MUSÏTÏI VAMÏ
By forming the Samaya Vajra Fist Mudra, Vajra Body, Speech, and Mind unite into a single essence. The yoga practitioner swiftly attains all accomplishments.
Next, form the Samaya Mudra. Begin with the preceding Vajra Bond Mudra. Raise the Ksanti and Pranidhana fingers—the two middle fingers—upright and join them together. Recite the mantra three times. The mantra is:
“ÁN – tam ma dã, sa-đát-nam”
OMÏ SAMAYA STVAMÏ
Then contemplate your own body as equal to Vajrasattva, abiding within a moon disc. Further contemplate Vajrasattva appearing before your body like an image in a mirror, the two bodies facing one another without any difference. Because one forms this mudra, recites the mantra, and accords with the contemplation, one immediately becomes master of all mudras.
Next, form the Mudra of the Great Samaya Reality. With both hands form the Vajra Bond. Bend the Ksanti and Pranidhana fingers—the two middle fingers—into the palms so that their faces meet; extend the Dana and Prajna fingers—the two little fingers—straight, and join the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs. Keep the tips of the Ksanti and Pranidhana fingers touching the heart. The mantra is:
“ÁN – Tam ma dã, Hộc – Tố la đa, sa-đát-noan”
OMÏ SAMAYA HOHÏ SURATA STVAMÏ
By forming this mudra, Vajrasattva within the yogin’s body is awakened and, through majestic spiritual power, empowers the practitioner swiftly to attain the body of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
Next, form the Mudra of the Bodhisattva Victorious over the Three Worlds. Both hands form Vajra Fists; place the right hand above the left, reverse the Dana and Prajna fingers—the two little fingers—and hook them together, then extend the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—straight. Hold the mudra horizontally at the heart and recite the mantra three times. The mantra is:
“ÁN – Tốn bà nãnh, Tốn bà Hồng – Ngật-la hận-noa ngật-la hận-noa, HỒng – Ngật-la hận-noa bạt dã Hồng – A nẵng dã hộc,bà nga noan phộc nhật-la Hồng, phát-tra”
OMÏ SUMÏBHANI SUMÏBHA HÙMÏ - GRÏHNÏA GRÏHNÏA HÙMÏ - GRÏHNÏA-APAYA HÙMÏ - ÀNAYA HOHÏ - BHAGAVAMÏ VAJRA HÙMÏ PHATÏ
Then enter the Vajra Wrathful, Majestically Radiant, Blazing Samadhi of Victory over the Three Worlds. This bodhisattva has four wrathful faces and eight arms, each holding a weapon. His left foot treads upon Isvara, and his right foot treads upon Uma, the consort of Isvara, in the shape of the character ding ( ).
His entire body blazes with brilliant flames like the conflagration at the end of a kalpa. This is the Samadhi Contemplation of the Victorious Noble One. The yoga practitioner should abide in bodhicitta, arouse profound compassion, and eliminate the inner and outer obstructions caused by humans and devas.
Then rotate the mudra three times to the left to expel obstructions, and three times to the right, making the boundary of the directions as large or small as desired. Press it upon the heart, forehead, throat, and crown, reciting the mantra once at each place, then release the mudra above the crown.
By forming this mudra, reciting the mantra, and abiding in this Wrathful Samadhi, all karmic obstructions and afflictions within the body are burned away without remainder by the fierce and keen wisdom-fire of the Vajra.
Next, form the Lotus Samaya Mudra. Begin with the preceding Vajra Bond; raise the Dana and Prajna fingers—the two little fingers—upright, join the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs—and place the mudra above the mouth. Recite the mantra:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la bạt ná-ma Tam ma gia, Sa-đát-noan”
OMÏ - VAJRA PADMA SAMAYA STAVAMÏ
The yogin should reflect: “This body of mine is now equal to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.” Visualize the left hand held across the heart holding a lotus, while the right hand assumes the gesture of opening the flower, all abiding within a full moon disc. Each detail should be perfectly clear.
Through forming this mudra, reciting the mantra, and receiving empowerment, one swiftly accomplishes all samadhis and all skillful means of prajnaparamita.
Next, form the Samadhi Mudra. Begin with the preceding Vajra Bond, turn it upward over the crossed legs in the full lotus posture, and bend the middle joints of the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—so that their backs rest against each other. Use the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs—to grasp them together from above. Then recite the mantra:
“ÁN – Tam ma địa bạt ná-minh, ngật-lý”
OMÏ SAMÀDHI PADME HRÌHÏ
The yogin straightens the body, sits upright, and remains serene and motionless. Contemplate your own body within the oceanic assembly of all Tathagatas. Contemplate each Buddha-body as subtle and minute as a sesame seed, complete with excellent marks, each perfectly clear. Then enter the contemplative wisdom of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and reflect: “All dharmas have been pure from the beginning; I too am pure. When craving in the world is purified, anger is also purified. When all dust and defilement in the world are purified, all transgressions are also purified. Because all dharmas in the world are purified, all sentient beings are also purified. When prajnaparamita in the world is purified, sarvajnana—omniscience—is also purified.”
When the yogin has completed this contemplation, body and mind suddenly become pure. Then recite the Mantra for Penetrating the Mind:
“ÁN – Tức đa, bát-la đề phệ đặng ca lỗ nhĩ”
OMÏ CÍTTA PRATIVEDHAMÏ KARA UMI
The yogin should recite it without limiting the number. One will realize the two kinds of selflessness—the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of dharmas—manifest the tathagatagarbha, and realize perfect bodhicitta. Then recite the Bodhicitta Mantra:
“ÁN – Mạo địa tức đa, mẫu bát-đạt ná, dạ nhĩ”
OMÏ BODHICITTAM UTPÀDA YÀMI
Then close the eyes, still the mind, and contemplate within the chest of your own body a perfectly round moon disc, white, immaculate, and pure. Concentrate single-mindedly without engaging any other object. Upon this circular radiance, visualize an eight-petaled lotus, and in the center of the lotus contemplate the syllable Hật-lý ( - HRÌHÏ), the color of red crystal. Then recite the Mantra for Empowering the Lotus:
“ÁN – Đề sắt-xá bạt ná-ma”
OMÏ TISÏTÏA PADMA
Visualize that lotus gradually expanding until it fills the minor chiliocosm, the medium chiliocosm, and the great chiliocosm. That flower possesses great radiance illuminating beings in the six paths, eliminating all their suffering and distress, and enabling them to attain peace and joy. Then recite the Mantra for Expanding the Lotus:
“ÁN – Sa-phả la bát ná-ma”
OMÏ SPHARA PADMA
Again visualize that lotus gradually contracting until it is the same size as your own body. Then recite the Lotus Mantra:
“ÁN – Tăng hạ la, bát ná-ma”
OMÏ SAMÏHARA PADMA
Further visualize all Tathagatas throughout space entering this lotus and uniting as one essence. That lotus transforms into Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, whose body is the color of red crystal. He sits upon a lotus throne and wears a jeweled crown, within which is a transformation Buddha. Every detail is perfectly clear. Having contemplated thus with a resolute mind, recite the Yoga Mantra for One’s Own Body Becoming the Honored Deity:
“ÁN – Phộc nhật-la đạt mô hàm”
OMÏ VAJRA DHARMA UHAMÏ
Through the empowerment of reciting this mantra, the yogin’s body becomes identical to the body of the principal deity, without any difference.
Next, form the Empowerment Mudra. Begin with the preceding Vajra Bond. Join and extend the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—straight, then bend them slightly like a lotus. Extend the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs—together. Empower the four places with the mudra: the heart, forehead, throat, and crown, reciting the mantra once at each. The mantra is:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la đạt ma địa sắt-sa, sa-phộc hàm”
OMÏ VAJRA DHARMA ADHISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ
Because one forms this mudra and receives empowerment, the practitioner gains majestic virtue and mastery, becomes free from all obstructions, and swiftly accomplishes the yoga of the principal deity.
Next, form the Mudra of the Buddha’s Jeweled-Radiance Abhiseka. Begin with the preceding Vajra Bond. Raise the Ksanti and Pranidhana fingers—the two middle fingers—and the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—upright, resting them against one another like a lotus. Place the mudra upon the forehead and recite the mantra three times. The mantra is:
“ÁN – Đát tha nghiệt đa, đạt ma, Hồng”
OMÏ TATHÀGATA DHARMA HÙMÏ
By forming this mudra and reciting the mantra, one receives the abhiseka of the jeweled crown of Amitayus Tathagata.
Next, form the Lotus Garland Mudra. Both hands form Lotus Fists and are placed level with the forehead, like spiraling curls of hair, then rotated together three times. Separate the two hands, move them around behind the crown, and again rotate them three times. Then lower them slowly along both sides as though loosening and removing a crown. Beginning with the Dana and Prajna fingers—the two little fingers—release and scatter the ten fingers in sequence. Recite the mantra:
“ÁN – Bạt ná-ma, ma lê, đạt ma, Hật-lý, Hàm”
OMÏ PADMA MÀLE DHARMA HRÌHÏ HÙMÏ
By forming the Lotus Garland Mudra, one becomes a Dharma King within the Lotus Family.
Next, form the Vajra Armor Mudra. Both hands form Vajra Fists and extend the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—straight. At their two tips visualize the two syllables ÁN and CHÀM [the syllable ÁN ( - OMÏ) at the tip of the right index finger and the syllable CHÀM ( - TÏUMÏ) at the tip of the left index finger]. Then recite the Armor Mantra:
“ÁN – phộc nhật-la ca phộc tả, phộc nhật-lý cự lỗ, phộc nhật-la, phộc nhật-la, hàm”
OMÏ VAJRA KAVACE VARÌ KURU VAJRA VAJRA HÙMÏ
While reciting the mantra, begin with the two Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—above the heart and rotate them together three times. Separate them, move them behind the back, and rotate them together there. Next, rotate them together at the navel.
Next, move them around the right knee, then to the back, rotating them together. Next, move them behind the waist and then return them before the heart. Next, rotate them at the right shoulder, then at the left shoulder, then at the throat, then behind the neck, then before the forehead, and finally behind the head.
At each place, rotate them three times. As before, lower them slowly along both sides as though removing a crown. Beginning with the Dana and Prajna fingers—the two little fingers—release and scatter the ten fingers in sequence.
Then rotate the fists with both hands as though dancing until they are level with the heart, and clap the palms three times. Then recite the Hand-Clapping Mantra:
“ÁN – Bát ná-ma, đổ sử-dã, hộc”
OMÏ PADMA TUSÏYA HOHÏ
By forming the Vajra Armor Mudra, until attaining Buddhahood, in every place and every lifetime one will continually wear the Vajra Armor of Great Loving-Kindness to adorn body and mind. Both worldly and supramundane siddhis that one seeks will be swiftly accomplished, and inner and outer Vinayaka obstructions will be unable to invade or disturb one. Through reciting the Vajra Hand-Clapping Mantra, the entire noble assembly becomes joyful.
Next, in the expanse of space below, visualize the syllable HÁM ( - Hamï), deep black in color, gradually expanding and becoming the great wind disc.
Above the wind disc, visualize the white syllable NOAN ( - Vamï), gradually expanding until it corresponds in size to the wind disc and transforms into the water disc.
Above the water disc, visualize the yellow syllable BÁT-LA ( - pra), corresponding in size to the water disc and becoming a golden tortoise.
Upon the tortoise’s back, visualize the syllable TỐ ( - Su) transforming into Mount Sumeru, the Wondrously High Mountain, formed of the four precious substances. Further visualize the syllable KIẾM ( - Kamï) transforming into seven encircling ranges of golden mountains.
Then, in the expanse of space above Mount Sumeru, visualize Vairocana Buddha. From every pore of his honored body, rain of fragrant milk pours down upon the seven mountain ranges, forming an ocean of fragrant milk endowed with the eight qualities.
At the summit of Mount Sumeru, visualize a great eight-petaled lotus. Upon the lotus are eight great Vajra pillars forming a jeweled pavilion. Within the heart of the lotus, visualize the syllable HỐT-LÝ ( -Hrìhï). From this syllable radiates great light that illuminates all Buddha worlds. All suffering beings touched by that light attain liberation.
Within this great radiance appears the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, endowed with immeasurable excellent marks and blazing with majestic virtue. The ten Paramita Bodhisattvas surround him, and the eight Offering Bodhisattvas abide in their respective stations.
At the four corners of the jeweled pavilion are four bodhisattvas: Pandaravasini, Mahapandaravasini, Tara, and Bhrikuti. Together with an immeasurable assembly of the Lotus Family, they surround him before and behind, with the eight classes of devas as their retinue.
Thus contemplate the immeasurable noble assembly and the principal deity with perfect clarity, without forgetting their sequence.
Then form the Mudra of the Bodhisattva Who Arouses the Resolve and Turns the Dharma Wheel. Both hands form Vajra Fists; hook and bind together the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—and the Dana and Prajna fingers—the two little fingers. Then recite the mantra:
“ÁN – Phộc nhật-la chước ngật-la Hồng – Nhược, Hồng, Noan, Hộc”
OMÏ VAJRA CAKRA HÙMÏ - JAHÏ HÙMÏ VAMÏ HOHÏ
Place the mudra upon the altar before your body, and it immediately becomes the Great Mandala of Subjugation of the Lotus Family World.
Place the mudra upon your heart, and your own body becomes the Great Mandala.
Touch the image of the principal deity with the mudra. Whether that image is painted, cast, or modeled, it becomes the Great Mandala.
Place the mudra in the space before your body, and the whole realm of space becomes the Great Mandala.
Even if the practitioner has transgressed the Dharma, erred through the three karmic activities, or broken the Samaya Precepts, through the empowerment of forming this mudra all faults are eliminated and perfection is immediately attained.
Next, form the Mudra for Universally Inviting and Awakening the Entire Noble Assembly. As before, form the Vajra Bond, raise the Ksanti and Pranidhana fingers—the two middle fingers—upright, and bend the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—like hooks. The yoga practitioner should recite the Mantra for Awakening the Noble Assembly three times in an elegant Brahma voice, thereby awakening the principal deity, the ten Paramita Bodhisattvas, and the noble assembly of the Lotus Family. The mantra is:
1. A dạ tứ, thi già-lãm, tố nghiệt-đá, chỉ-nhương phệ nga đa.
2. Nhất bát-la noa nhĩ đán đế, phộc la tát đát-phộc vị ngật-la ma.
3. Ca lỗ tứ đát noan, phộc la ná, ma hạ ma la
4. A tản noa ca tát đát-phộc, vị thuật địa ca la ca
5. Đát đát-lệ nan, để la diêm, để la diêm
6. Vĩ la diêm, vĩ la diêm
7. A la la ngật-lý bá ma dã – Sa phộc hạ
Then form the Mudra for the Auspicious Convocation of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Separate the preceding mudra and cross the forearms before the chest, right over left. Snap the fingers using Ksanti and Dhyana—the right middle finger and right thumb—and Pranidhana and Jnana—the left middle finger and left thumb.
Visualize the left hand opening and raising a vajra ghanta—a Vajra bell—while the right hand holds and strikes a single-pronged vajra. Its sound resounds throughout the worlds of the ten directions. Upon hearing it, the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and entire noble assembly all gather in the space above the mandala.
The yogin then abides in the samadhi of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, penetrates the hymn of the 108 names of the Lotus Family, and universally pays homage to the entire noble assembly. Recite the praise:
1. Nhạ dã độ một-lị noa la hướng khư nhạ tra kế xả ca la bả đà lãm
2. Bát ná-ma phộc lãng nga duệ sắt-trí đát-la dã, mật đát-la, sa hạ sa-la bộ-trâm sa đát đa, na mặc sa cật lị.
3. Đố bỉ vĩ nễ-dã đà la, nĩ phộc nga nẫm
4. A hạ ma phộc lộ chỉ đế thấp-phộc la, canh lam sa đa đan bát-la noa đa
5. Bá ná-ma la nga nĩnh ma lam
6. Ca ma la nga mẫu đáp hàm
7. Lộ ca nẵng tha, mạn đà mính
8. Tát phộc truật đà tất-địa-dã tả
Next, form the Hook Mudra of Hayagriva Vidyaraja. With both hands form the Vajra Bond, bend the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—like hooks, and draw them toward the body in a summoning gesture. Recite the mantra three times. The mantra is:
“ÁN – Hạ dã ngật-lị phộc. Ma hạ bả ná-mang cự xá, yết la-sái dã thước già-la. Tát phộc bả ná-ma củ la, Tam ma diễm. Bá ná-mang cự xả đà la, Hồng, nhược”
OMÏ - HÀYAGRIVA MAHÀ PADMA ANKU’SA AKARSÏÀYA ‘SÌGRAMÏ - SARVA PADMA KÙLA SAMAYAMÏ PADMA ANKU’SA DHÀRA - HÙMÏ JAHÏ
When one forms this mudra and summons them, the entire noble assembly gathers together.
Next, form the Mudra of Amoghapasa Bodhisattva. Join both hands in the Lotus Joined Palms. Form a Vajra Bond with the Upaya and Bala fingers—the two index fingers—and the Dhyana and Jnana fingers—the two thumbs—and insert the right thumb into the space between the left thumb and index finger. Then recite the mantra:
“ÁN – A mô già bá ná-ma bả xả. Cự lỗ đà yết-la sái dã. Bát-la phệ xả dã, ma hạ bá thâu bá để, Diễm ma, phộc lỗ noa, cự phệ la, một-la hám-ma, phệ sái đà la. Bát ná-ma cự la Tam ma diễm, Hồng HỒng”
OMÏ - AMOGHA PADMA PÀ’SA KRODHA AKARSÏÀYA - PRAVE’SÀYA, MAHÀ PÀ’SUPÀTI , YAMA , VARUNÏA, KUBERA, BRAHMA, VE’SADHÀRA - PADMA KULA SAMAYAMÏ HÙMÏ HÙMÏ
By forming this mudra, the entire noble assembly is led into the Great Mandala.
