Namo Medicine Master Vaiḍūrya Light Tathagata.
One who practices this rite should bathe and cleanse himself, put on clean new garments, eat pure foods, remain apart from afflictions, and keep his mind pure while contemplating and recollecting the merits of the Three Jewels and the merits of the sutra. He should arouse pure faith and cultivate the Four Immeasurables. If a householder, he must receive and uphold the Eight Precepts.
At dawn on the eighth day of each month, he should establish a ritual altar according to the Dharma, purify it by sprinkling, and arrange all manner of adornments, banners, streamers, and precious canopies. Colored powders or various flowers should be scattered throughout. Within the altar, enshrine Buddha relics and images, together with images of the noble sages, and arrange offerings according to one’s means.
Before each image place seven lamps, hang seven multicolored streamers, and burn various renowned incenses. Offer flowers, fragrant ointments, fine and delicious foods, various kinds of music, and pure precious vessels, arranging everything according to one’s means. Invite the Sangha to recite the Prajnaparamita and Mahavaipulya sutras for one seven-day period, two seven-day periods, or as many as seven seven-day periods.
Such is the rite for establishing the place of awakening. Having thus presented offerings and undertaken the practice, the assembly should practice in the prescribed order. First contemplate the nature of emptiness; for the sake of sentient beings, cultivate the contemplation of the Four Immeasurables and arouse bodhicitta.
Contemplate that all Buddhas and bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions likewise bestow empowerment and gather beings into their care, as follows:
“By the power of the truth of the Three Jewels; by the empowering and embracing power of the Buddhas and great bodhisattvas; by the power of the fruition arising from the complete accumulation of the two provisions; and by the inconceivable pure power of the dharmadhatu: as the Buddhas and bodhisattvas have made vast vows to create pure lands, just as described in the Sutra of the Merits of the Fundamental Vows of the Seven Buddhas, may all Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, and holy Dharma protectors throughout the ten directions assemble in this place of awakening.
May the altar, together with every offering and every adornment of the land, be transformed into adornments like those of the land of the Buddha Amitayus, with merits no different from those thereof. May the Buddha-land be level and fashioned entirely from the seven precious substances, replete with joy, pure and undefiled, with light shining everywhere and the fragrance of burning sandalwood. May celestial flowers be scattered about.
May there be precious pools surrounded by all kinds of jewels, their bottoms strewn with gold, silver, pearls, and precious stones, and containing utpala, kumuda, padma, and other flowers. May there also be multicolored birds and animals singing wondrous sounds that delight the assembly. May there be pools filled with pure, delightful water possessing the merits of bathing.
May there be celestial precious trees, each bearing all kinds of flowers and fruits, and from every branch may hang vaiḍūrya jewels, mani gems, bells, and wooden chimes that sound without being struck and proclaim the wondrous Dharma. May all such adornments be complete.
“May the supremely wondrous palace also be adorned with the seven precious substances, its light illuminating the worlds of the ten directions and all those worlds appearing within it. May every land be pure and transcend the mundane world. All this arises through the majestic power of the Tathagata’s pure roots of virtue.
There the Tathagata guides immeasurable assemblies of bodhisattvas, together with devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, humans, and nonhumans. They constantly enjoy the bliss of the flavor of Dharma, benefiting sentient beings, far removed from every defilement, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress, and free from the works of Mara. The Tathagata’s adorned cities and palaces arise from the resolute thought of great compassion.
Through shamatha and vipashyana, one enters the gates of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness—and possesses immeasurable and boundless merits.
“Upon kingly lotus flowers within the precious palace are lion thrones for the Tathagatas King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name; King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom; Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light; Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow; Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean; Supreme Wisdom of the Dharma Ocean, Master of Playful Supernormal Powers; King of Vaiḍūrya Light, Medicine Master; our Fundamental Teacher Shakyamuni; and all Tathagatas throughout the worlds of the ten directions, together with the assemblies of great bodhisattvas and the holy Dharma protectors.
Through the supreme power of the vows of these holy assemblies, may the most excellent accomplishment arise in accordance with the Dharma and with karmic fruition.
“Furthermore, inside and outside, may every kind of supremely excellent requisite appear: food and drink, clothing, bracelets and ornaments, music, and all the finest offerings, as abundant as ocean-clouds. Thus, in accordance with our aspirations, may all kinds of adornments arise and clouds of offerings filling the ocean of space become universally complete. We humbly pray that everything be fully present according to your wishes. May the holy assemblies likewise bestow empowerment, gather us into their care, and joyfully accept and enjoy these offerings.” Recite this three times.
Then say: “By the power of the truth of the Three Jewels; by the empowering and embracing power of the Buddhas and great bodhisattvas; by the power of the perfect fruition of the two accumulations; and by the inconceivable purity of the dharmadhatu, may everything be accomplished according to our wishes.” Recite this three times, thus completing the empowerment and consecration of the offerings.
Next invite the holy assembly. Kneel with both knees touching the ground, join the palms while holding flowers, and issue this invitation:
“With single-minded devotion, we invite the Tathagatas King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name; King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom; Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light; King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow; Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean; Supreme Wisdom of the Dharma Ocean, Master of Playful Supernormal Powers; King of Vaiḍūrya Light, Medicine Master; our Fundamental Teacher Shakyamuni; all Tathagatas, Worthy Ones, Perfectly Awakened Ones throughout the ten directions and the three times; and all great bodhisattvas.
We humbly pray that you take pity upon us. With great loving-kindness and compassion, for the benefit of beings in the latter five-hundred-year period when the Semblance Dharma is in decline—when all sentient beings are obstructed by karmic hindrances, afflicted by diseases, and continually harmed by grief, sorrow, suffering, and distress—you perform deeds of benefit for sentient beings immersed in suffering. Wishing to bring peace and happiness to devas and humans, you rely upon the supreme and wondrous majestic power and vast skillful means of the Tathagatas.
We now wish to take refuge, protect the Dharma, and sincerely invoke your power. May the holy assembly descend to this place of awakening and compassionately accept our offerings.
“With single-minded devotion, we invite our teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, who manifested nirvana for the benefit of sentient beings in Jambudvipa. May the Tathagata freely exercise playful supernormal powers to benefit sentient beings. May the World-Honored One, in great loving-kindness and compassion, remember and never abandon his vow. Wishing now to repay our debt of gratitude to beings, we serve as a refuge and a source of Dharma protection for all sentient beings and sincerely invoke your power. We humbly pray that you descend to the altar and compassionately accept our offerings.”
“With single-minded devotion, we invoke Manjushri Bodhisattva Mahasattva and the entire holy assembly of bodhisattvas. In your great loving-kindness and compassion, remember how you formerly expounded before the assembly the merits of the fundamental vows of the Seven Buddhas and vowed to obey the Buddha’s words and preserve the scripture. Bodhisattvas, for the sake of all sentient beings I now serve as a refuge and a source of Dharma protection and sincerely invoke your power. May you descend to this place of awakening and accept these offerings.
“With single-minded devotion, we invite those who from ancient times have attended the Tathagatas, those devas who, by truthful speech and in obedience to the Buddha’s command, vowed to protect the True Dharma, the fourfold assembly, and the Sutra of the Fundamental Vows of the Seven Buddha Tathagatas: Great Brahma, Lord Shakra, the Heavenly King Guardian of the Nation, the Heavenly King Who Increases Growth, the Heavenly King of Vast Vision, the Heavenly King of Extensive Learning, and the holy assembly of Dharma protectors. For the sake of sentient beings I now serve as a refuge and a source of Dharma protection and sincerely invoke your power. May you descend to this place of awakening and accept these offerings.
“With single-minded devotion, we invoke those who formerly, in the great assemblies of the Buddhas, made this great vow before the assembly: ‘If anyone receives, upholds, reads, recites, and makes offerings to the Sutra of the Merits of the Fundamental Vows of the Seven Buddha Tathagatas, we shall protect that person and cause every aspiration to be fulfilled.’
“Those who vowed to protect it are:
General Kumbhira
General Vajra
General Mihira
General Andira
General Anila
General Sandira
General Indra
General Pajra
General Mahura
General Cindura
General Caundhula
General Vikarala
“Great Generals, remember your vows. For the sake of sentient beings I now serve as a refuge and a source of protection and sincerely invoke your power. May you descend to this place of awakening and accept these offerings.”
Having completed the invocation in this manner, visualize the holy assembly coming from their respective lands through supernormal power, traveling through the sky. Within the supremely wondrous palace, upon lotus lion thrones, seat the eight Tathagatas and the Dharma Jewel. On both sides place the thrones of the bodhisattvas and their attendants. In front place Manjushri Bodhisattva, Deliverance Bodhisattva, and Vajrapani Bodhisattva, requesting them to remember their fundamental vows and perform deeds of benefit. To the left place the Twelve Great Generals. To the right place Great Brahma and Lord Shakra. At the four gates place the Four Great Heavenly Kings. Visualize all offerings as complete, contemplating them as described above.
Then, with the water of merit and so forth, bow and declare:
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to all Sugatas and great bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name, and his immeasurable hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom, and his immeasurable assembly of bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light, and his immeasurable hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow, and his immeasurable assembly of bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean, and his immeasurable assembly of bodhisattvas. Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha Supreme Wisdom of the Dharma Ocean, Master of Playful Supernormal Powers, and his immeasurable assembly of bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Vaiḍūrya Light, Medicine Master; to Universal Radiance of Sunlight and Universal Radiance of Moonlight; and to the immeasurable assembly of bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, our Fundamental Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, and his assembly of thirty-six thousand bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to Manjushri Bodhisattva, Deliverance Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, and the assemblies of great bodhisattvas.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to Great Brahma, Lord Shakra, the Four Great Heavenly Kings, and the holy and noble assembly of Dharma protectors.
“Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to General Kumbhira and the assembly of the Twelve Yakshas.”
Then present offerings, saying:
“Before the Great Holy Ones, I now offer wondrous water of merit, fragrant ointments, burning incense, bright lamps, food and drink, various kinds of music, banners, streamers, precious canopies, and every requisite, together with the finest requisites desired by devas and humans throughout the ten directions.
“Through the supernormal power of the mantra and the empowering power of faith and vows, may these offerings multiply like ocean-clouds. Like the aspirations and conduct of Samantabhadra, may the most excellent offerings completely fill space. I now offer them to the great holy assembly.
“Since beginningless time throughout all my past lives, I have created evil karma, committed every deed that should not be done, and performed unwholesome acts. I now repent of all such transgressions and karma.
“I rejoice in all the roots of virtue of the Buddhas of the three times and of sentient beings.
“I earnestly request all Tathagatas throughout the ten directions to turn the Great Dharma Wheel.
“When any Lamp of the World is about to enter nirvana, I earnestly beseech that one to delay entering and remain in the world for a long time, benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings.
“World-Honored Ones and holy assemblies within this great gathering, please take pity upon me. With great loving-kindness and compassion, for the benefit of beings in the latter five-hundred-year period when the Semblance Dharma is in decline—when all sentient beings possess profound karmic hindrances, are oppressed by diseases, and are continually harmed by grief, sorrow, suffering, and distress—you perform deeds of benefit for sentient beings submerged in the ocean of suffering. Wishing to benefit and bring peace and happiness to devas and humans, the seven Tathagatas, Worthy Ones, Perfectly Awakened Ones, formerly employed skillful means and made supremely excellent, wondrous, exalted vows, bestowing empowerment and gathering beings into their care.
“Our teacher Shakyamuni Buddha likewise expounded the scriptures and empowered and embraced Manjushri Bodhisattva, Deliverance Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, and all assemblies of bodhisattvas, bringing them to true accomplishment. Those World-Honored Ones fully made vast vows in order to fulfill the beneficial purposes of this sutra and bring the holy ones to accomplishment. In obedience to the Buddha’s words, they empowered and embraced Great Brahma, Lord Shakra, the Four Great Heavenly Kings, the Twelve Yakshas, the holy assemblies, and the upasakas who in former great assemblies made vast vows to protect this sutra and those who uphold it.
Therefore, today I also wish to follow the Rite of the Merits of the Fundamental Vows as you taught: establishing a place of awakening, assembling all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and holy assemblies, arranging every offering in abundance, proclaiming the sacred names, and presenting offerings within the place of awakening to the entire holy assembly. I pray that the holy assembly bestow blessings and accept these offerings.
Remember your vows and fulfill them for us, so that I and all sentient beings presently assembled may obtain every meritorious benefit described in the sutra.” Recite this three times.
Afterward, make offerings, aspirations, and supplications before the holy assembly. First invoke the name of the Tathagata King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name and personally present offerings. Pray as follows:
– Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Bhagavat, Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name. (7 times)
Then personally present offerings. Before the Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, and holy assembly, declare:
– If a person hears the name of the Tathagata King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name, mindfully contemplates it, invokes the sacred name, respectfully makes offerings, and bows seven times, that person will receive majestic spiritual power like that arising from the supreme vows made by the Tathagata King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name.
May we and all sentient beings who are physically afflicted by sickness, heat, cold, parasites, sorcery, corpse-raising spirits, and every other frightening harm be delivered.
From now until we attain Perfect Awakening, may all calamities, diseases, and suffering be completely eliminated, completely eliminated.
May we and all sentient beings afflicted by blindness, speech impediments, muteness, deafness, leprosy, insanity, and every kind of illness, from now until Perfect Awakening, possess complete faculties, and may every disease and cause of suffering be utterly eliminated.
May we and all sentient beings who, bound by greed, hatred, and delusion, have committed the five heinous offenses and other evil deeds, slandered the True Dharma, and failed to cultivate goodness, thereby falling into the hells and evil destinies and suffering many illnesses—may all our heinous offenses and karmic hindrances be utterly purified. Until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, may we never again fall into the three evil destinies and may we always enjoy the supreme happiness of devas and humans.
May we and all sentient beings who suffer through lacking food, clothing, ornaments, bedding, money, jewels, incense, flowers, and music, from now until we attain Perfect Awakening, possess abundant food, clothing, ornaments, bedding, money, jewels, incense, flowers, music, and every necessity of life.
May I and all sentient beings who are confined in stocks, fetters, chains, and bonds, beaten with whips and rods, and subjected to suffering and distress, from now until we attain Perfect Awakening, be freed from and completely relieved of all such suffering.
May I and all sentient beings who have no rescue or refuge and are oppressed by suffering in dangerous places, where vicious beasts, tigers, leopards, lions, wolves, snakes, centipedes, and scorpions torment us and seek to devour our flesh, from now until we attain Perfect Awakening, be freed from every terror. May all those harmful creatures arouse loving-kindness, and may we always dwell in peace and happiness.
May I and all sentient beings who experience sorrow through arguments, disputes, and mutual conflict, from now until we attain Perfect Awakening, be freed from all such fear and affliction. May it all be eliminated, and may everyone arouse loving-kindness toward one another.
May I and all sentient beings who, seeking a livelihood, travel upon rivers and seas and are driven adrift by violent winds, not knowing where we shall arrive and becoming utterly terrified, from now until we attain Perfect Awakening, be free from every fear. May all things accord with our wishes, and may we reach places of happiness and enjoy every joy.
When I approach death, may I be born in the land of the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name, taking miraculous birth from a lotus upon a precious lotus lion throne and attaining the gateways of dharani, samadhis, and every merit.
Before the Tathagata King of Auspiciousness Renowned for His Excellent Name and the Buddhas of the ten directions, may I hear the wondrous Dharma and attend upon and make offerings to them. May the Buddhas rejoice in me, and may I travel unobstructed to all Buddha-fields in the space of a single instant.
– Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Bhagavat, Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom. (7 times)
Next, personally present offerings. Before the Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, and holy assembly, declare: If one hears the name of the Buddha King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom, contemplates it with right mindfulness, invokes his name, respectfully makes offerings, and bows seven times, then through majestic spiritual power like that of the supreme, wondrous, exalted vows made by the Buddha King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom, may we and all sentient beings who, through occupations, commerce, and farming, become attached to sensual pleasures so that our minds are preoccupied and troubled, failing to cultivate wholesome Dharma leading to liberation, falling into samsara without escape,
and suffering immeasurable and boundless decline, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress, be delivered.
From now until we attain Perfect Awakening, may clothing, food, drink, and every necessity of life be complete; may gold, silver, and jewels be abundant; may our roots of virtue continually increase; may we never depart from bodhicitta; and may we be freed from all suffering in the evil destinies.
May I and all sentient beings whose bodies are tormented by heat, cold, hunger, or thirst, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, have all the karma of former lives purified, remain far from suffering, and enjoy the happiness of devas and humans.
May I and all sentient beings who have female bodies and, oppressed by various sufferings, become weary and wish to leave that state behind, or who suffer pain during childbirth, be freed from every such suffering.
In future lives, until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, may we always possess male bodies.
May I and all sentient beings whose parents, brothers, sisters, spouses, children, relatives, or close friends enter dangerous places and suffer at the hands of bandits, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, be freed from and completely relieved of every danger and oppression by bandits.
May I and all sentient beings who conduct our affairs in dark places, are troubled by ghosts and spirits, and become afraid, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, be freed from every evil suffering and danger, pass from darkness into light, and cause all evil ghosts and spirits to arouse compassionate intentions, make great effort, attend upon us, and present offerings.
May I and all sentient beings who perform evil deeds, lack faith in the Three Jewels, possess little wisdom, fail to cultivate wholesome Dharma, and do not train in the faculties, powers, teachings of the path, mindfulness, concentration, or dharani, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, possess complete wisdom, have profound faith in the Three Jewels, and train fully in the thirty-seven factors of awakening.
May I and all sentient beings who delight in the Lesser Vehicle and do not delight in unsurpassed bodhi abandon the Two Vehicles, arouse bodhicitta toward unsurpassed awakening, and never regress.
When this eon comes to an end and the fires of desire blaze throughout southern Jambudvipa, may I and all sentient beings who become greatly anxious and afraid and, through evil karma from former lives, suffer without refuge, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, be freed from every sorrow and suffering and experience refreshing coolness.
When our lives end, may we be born from lotus flowers in the Buddha-field of the King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom, upon precious lotus lion thrones, and attain the gateways of dharani, samadhis, and every merit. Thereafter, before the teacher Tathagata King of Sovereign Voice, Radiant with the Adornment of Precious Moon Wisdom, and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, may we hear the wondrous Dharma and attend upon and make offerings to them. May the Buddhas rejoice in us, and may we travel unobstructed to all Buddha-fields in the space of a single instant.
– Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Bhagavat, Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light. (7 times)
– Again, personally present offerings. Before the Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, and holy assembly, declare: If one hears the name of the Tathagata Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light, contemplates it correctly, invokes the name, respectfully makes offerings, and bows seven times, one receives great majestic spiritual power like that of the supreme, wondrous, exalted vows made by the Tathagata Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light. May I and all sentient beings who have committed acts of killing and, through that evil karma, must suffer in hell, or who, even if born human, suffer many illnesses and die young, or are harmed by water, fire, blades, or poison and undergo the suffering of death, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, have all evil karma purified, remain free from illness and untimely death, and enjoy long lives.
May I and all sentient beings who have committed evil karma by violently seizing or stealing wealth, fallen into evil destinies, or, though born human, are born into poor families, lacking food and clothing and undergoing many sufferings, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, have all evil karma purified and never lack clothing, food, or drink, but possess them in abundance.
May I and all sentient beings who oppress and kill one another, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, be freed from every suffering and distress, arouse loving-kindness, and regard one another as parents.
May I and all sentient beings who, through greed, hatred, delusion, pride, and doubt—whether householders or monastics, men or women among the seven assemblies—violate the Tathagata’s rules of training, create evil karma, squander the offerings of the faithful, fall into hell, and undergo painful retributions, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, have all evil karma purified, sever our afflictions, correctly uphold the precepts, and guard body, speech, and mind without regression.
The dharani is:
– Đát điệt tha: Tất đế Tất đế Tô Tất đế, mục tạt ni mục khất xoa ni, mục đế tì mục đế a ma lệ tì ma lệ mang ca lệ lan nhạ yết rị tì ra na yết rị tì, tát rị phạ a lị tha tát đà ni, bàn ra ma rị a nhạ đế a thất nhạ đế tì đa bà di tô phạ rị ni, bát ra ha ma cù sắc bát ra a ma đổ sắc đệ đế, tát rị phạ a rị đề thuật tát rị phạ đà a bát ra đế ha đế, tạt đổ rô, sa sắc đế phổ đà cụ đê bà sắc đệ đế na ma tát lị phạ đát tha nga đa nẫm sa phạ ha.

Long ago, the World-Honored One, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light, sat beneath the bodhi tree and beheld sentient beings everywhere who, because of greed, hatred, and delusion, were oppressed by afflictions and diseases, controlled by enemies, or suffered wrongful death, and who, through evil karma, fell into hell and underwent many torments. Wishing to save those beings, remove their karmic hindrances, and ultimately establish them in unsurpassed bodhi, he taught this mantra.
I now sincerely recite and uphold it. Through the mantra’s embracing power, may all the grave transgressions, five heinous offenses, and karmic hindrances of myself and all sentient beings be purified, and may all our aspirations be fulfilled. At the time of death, may we behold the World-Honored One, be compassionately protected and remembered by him, and attain rebirth in the land of the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light.
May we be miraculously born from lotuses upon precious lotus lion thrones and attain the gateways of dharani, samadhis, and every merit. Before the teacher Tathagata Accomplished in Wondrous Conduct through Golden Precious Light and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, may we hear the wondrous Dharma and attend upon and make offerings to them. May the Buddhas rejoice in us, and may we travel unobstructed to all Buddha-fields in the space of a single instant.
– Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Bhagavat, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow. (7 times)
Again, personally present offerings. Before the Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, and holy assembly, declare: If one hears the name of the Buddha King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow, contemplates it correctly, respectfully makes offerings, bows, and invokes his name seven times, one receives majestic spiritual power like that arising from the supremely excellent and wondrous great vows made by the Tathagata King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow. May I and all sentient beings who are constantly bound by sorrow and suffering, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, have every sorrow, suffering, and distress completely eliminated. May we never suffer separation from those we love, but live long, peacefully, securely, and happily.
May I and all sentient beings who, through evil karma, must enter the dark Avici realm and undergo torments within the great hell, be illuminated by the radiance of the Buddha King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow. May every karmic hindrance be purified, and until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, may we be freed from suffering, be born among devas and humans, and enjoy every happiness.
May I and all sentient beings who have created the evil karma of killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct, who in this life suffer from blades and cudgels and in future lives fall into evil destinies, or who, though born human, are born into lowly and impoverished families, suffer many illnesses and untimely death, continually lack food and clothing, endure heat, cold, hunger, and thirst, have dark and wan complexions, and possess unvirtuous relatives—from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, may all food and drink be fully supplied according to our wishes, may our bodies radiate light like those of devas, and may our relatives be virtuous.
May I and all sentient beings whose vital essence is stolen by yakshas and evil ghosts and spirits, causing diseases and suffering, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, cause all yakshas and evil spirits to flee and arouse loving-kindness. May the stolen vital essence be restored, and may we be freed from every disease and suffering.
When our lives end, may we attain rebirth in the land of the Buddha King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow, be miraculously born from lotuses upon precious lotus lion thrones, and attain the gateways of dharani, samadhis, and every merit. Before the teacher Tathagata King of Supreme Auspiciousness Free from Sorrow and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, may we hear the wondrous Dharma and attend upon and make offerings to them. May the Buddhas rejoice in us, and may we travel unobstructed to all Buddha-fields in the space of a single instant.
– Namo, I take refuge in and make offerings to the Bhagavat, Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean. (7 times)
Again, personally present offerings. Before the Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, and holy assembly, declare: Having heard the name of the Buddha Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean, if one contemplates it correctly, invokes his name seven times, respectfully makes offerings, and bows, one receives majestic spiritual power like that arising from the wondrous vows made by the Buddha Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean. May I and all sentient beings who are born into families holding wrong views, who do not arouse pure faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha and remain far removed from the mind of unsurpassed bodhi, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, have all wrong views and ignorance eliminated day and night, develop profound and steadfast faith in the Three Jewels,
and never regress from the mind of unsurpassed bodhi.
May I and all sentient beings who are born in hell because we associated with evil friends, committed evil karma, failed to cultivate goodness, and never even heard the names of the Three Jewels, thus falling after death into the three evil destinies—if such beings hear the name of the Tathagata Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean and also hear the Dharma teaching with the sound of the Dharma Ocean, then from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, may all our karmic hindrances be purified, may we meet spiritual friends, never fall into evil destinies, and never abandon bodhicitta.
May I and all sentient beings who lack clothing, food, drink, bedding, medicine, and other necessities and, becoming sorrowful because of this, create evil karma in order to obtain them, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, obtain at will all clothing, food, drink, bedding, medicine, and necessary requisites without deficiency.
May I and all sentient beings who, compelled by evil karma from former lives, seek to harm one another without benefit using bows, arrows, blades, and cudgels, from now until we attain unsurpassed bodhi, cause all who plot mutual harm with blades and cudgels to arouse loving-kindness and cease jealousy. May they abandon evil thoughts so that such thoughts never arise again, much less acts of killing. May they always practice sympathetic joy and equanimity, remain content with what they use, and be free from greed.
When my life ends, may I be born in the land of the Buddha Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean, be miraculously born from a lotus upon a lotus lion throne, and attain the gateways of dharani, samadhis, and every merit. Before the teacher Tathagata Thundering Sound of the Dharma Ocean and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, may I hear the wondrous Dharma and attend upon and make offerings to them. May the Buddhas rejoice in me, and may I travel unobstructed to all Buddha-fields in the space of a single instant.
