At that time, Mañjuśrī, Prince of the Dharma, knowing that the Tathagata had finished expounding the Dharma, asked the great bodhisattva Samantabhadra:

– Buddha-son! What is the unobstructed wisdom of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

What is the power of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, to teach and transform sentient beings?

What is the naturally existent, all-pervading wisdom of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

What is the inconceivable wisdom of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, that purifies Buddha lands?

What is the boundless body of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, which manifests everywhere?

What is the inconceivable domain of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

What is the non-discriminating, nondependent wisdom of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

What is the unobstructed body of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

The great bodhisattva Samantabhadra said to Mañjuśrī, Prince of the Dharma:

– Mañjuśrī! This Dharma gateway is difficult to see and difficult to know. It is neither the domain of awakening nor the domain of nonawakening, and it is difficult to believe.

Mañjuśrī! Whoever is able to believe in this Dharma gateway should be known to have formerly made offerings to immeasurable, boundless hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of nayutas of Buddhas.

Mañjuśrī! For the sake of all sentient beings who are blind and shrouded in darkness, I shall teach this Dharma gateway as a lamp to illuminate them.

Mañjuśrī, Prince of the Dharma, said:

– So it is! So it is! Buddha-son! Those sentient beings have formerly cultivated immeasurable and boundless merit and wisdom; therefore, it is for the sake of those sentient beings that I ask. Those sentient beings possess immeasurable and innumerable karmic deeds and must enter the hells or fall among hungry ghosts and animals, so I manifest a body to cause their karmic obstructions to be eliminated. Therefore, it is for the sake of those sentient beings that I ask. They are sentient beings who do not merely see and hear, but also make offerings. It is those sentient beings. Therefore, I ask.

Buddha-son! Whoever does not believe in this Dharma gateway can never attain unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment.

Buddha-son! For the well-being of the multitude of sentient beings, and to bring joy to immeasurable sentient beings; out of compassion for all worlds, and to benefit many people; and for the well-being and happiness of the multitude of devas and humans, this Dharma gateway is taught.

Why is this? It is because they accord with the Dharma of non-delusion.

Manjusri! It is like a great vaidurya wish-fulfilling jewel king wrapped in soiled cloth. Because of the soiled cloth, it displays many different phenomena; yet the great vaidurya wish-fulfilling jewel king makes no distinctions and is free from discrimination, being naturally so. Without distinction and free from discrimination, it naturally displays many different phenomena. Why is this? It is because it accords with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! In the same way, all Buddhas, the Tathagatas, Worthy Ones, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones, relying upon the unique qualities, are able to transform and deliver sentient beings, manifesting various forms and modes of conduct such as these. Yet all Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are free from discrimination, being naturally so. Without distinction and free from discrimination, they naturally enable the many different phenomena to be seen. Why is this? It is because they accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! This is called the unobstructed wisdom of all Buddhas, the Tathagatas.

Manjusri! This means that all Buddhas, the Tathagatas, throughout the worlds of the ten directions, enter without obstruction into every different kind of world. Each individual world, or worlds as numerous as motes of dust, enters into wisdom as vast as the great ocean of worlds as numerous as motes of dust.

Manjusri! Of all the different kinds of worlds—each individual world and each set of four continents—the various merits of all worlds as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean of adornments of merit. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, wisdoms as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean of adornments of merit. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, paramitas as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, attainments of peace and security as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, means of causing entry into bodhisattva conduct as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, means of causing profound entry into the Tathagata as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, means of causing entry into mental conduct that accords with sentient beings as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, means of causing entry into kalpas as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, throughout all Buddha lands of different kinds, means of causing entry into worlds as numerous as motes of dust form a great ocean. Within each instant of thought, there are innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom, without obstruction.

Thus, the different kinds of worlds and the great oceans cause one to enter teachings of the three times as numerous as dust motes in all Buddha lands; within each single thought-moment, there are innumerable distinct wisdom teachings, without obstruction.

Thus, the different kinds of worlds and the great oceans cause one to enter the three times, as numerous as dust motes in all Buddha lands; within each single thought-moment, there are innumerable distinct wisdom teachings, without obstruction.

Thus, the different kinds of worlds and all the great oceans cause one to enter undifferentiated wisdom, as numerous as dust motes in all Buddha lands; within each single thought-moment, there are innumerable distinct wisdom teachings, without obstruction.

Why is this? Because natural wisdom has been attained.

Manjushri! It is like echoes heard among mountains, rivers, and deep valleys. Depending upon different sounds and different names, various kinds of sounds arise; yet the mountains and valleys make no distinctions and are free from discrimination, being naturally so. Without giving rise to a discriminating mind and being free from discrimination, these many kinds of sounds naturally appear. Why is this? Because they accord with the unique qualities.

Manjushri! The Dharma-preaching voices of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, which accord with the minds of sentient beings, are likewise. According to whichever sentient beings can be transformed, the Buddhas employ innumerable Dharma gates, causing them to hear various kinds of sounds and many forms of speech. Yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are far removed from discrimination. Naturally so, without discrimination and far removed from discrimination, they naturally manifest many kinds of sounds. Why is this? Because the Buddhas have attained accordance with the unique qualities.

Manjushri! This is called a summary explanation of the unobstructed wisdom of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas. Were it explained extensively, it could not be fully expressed even throughout the infinite kalpas extending to the end of the future.

Manjushri! What is called the power of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, to teach and transform sentient beings?

Manjushri! The ushnishas of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, throughout the worlds of the ten directions—within all worlds, all dwelling places, every world, and every Jambudvipa—are without obstruction and without difference. Those ushnishas pervade the entire Dharma realm and the whole of empty space, as well as all worlds, teaching and transforming sentient beings throughout the future, everywhere across boundless worlds for innumerable kalpas, without ever ceasing.

Manjushri! Therefore, each of the Tathagata’s thirty-two marks appears universally throughout the worlds of the ten directions—within all worlds, all dwelling places, every world, and every Jambudvipa—without obstruction and without difference. That mark pervades the entire Dharma realm and the whole of empty space, as well as all worlds, teaching and transforming sentient beings throughout the future, everywhere across boundless worlds for innumerable kalpas, without ever ceasing.

Manjushri! The Tathagata’s eighty excellent characteristics are likewise. Each excellent characteristic appears universally throughout the worlds of the ten directions—within all worlds, all dwelling places, every world, and every Jambudvipa—without obstruction and without difference. That excellent characteristic pervades the entire Dharma realm and the whole of empty space, as well as all worlds, teaching and transforming sentient beings throughout the future, everywhere across boundless worlds for innumerable kalpas, without ever ceasing.

Manjushri! All the pores of the Tathagata are likewise. Each pore appears universally throughout the worlds of the ten directions—within all worlds, all dwelling places, every world, and every Jambudvipa—without obstruction and without difference. All those pores pervade the entire Dharma realm and the whole of empty space, as well as all worlds, teaching and transforming sentient beings throughout the future, everywhere across boundless worlds for innumerable kalpas, without ever ceasing.

Manjushri! All the Tathagata’s treasures appear universally throughout the worlds of the ten directions—within all worlds, all dwelling places, every world, and every Jambudvipa—without obstruction and without difference. All those treasures pervade the entire Dharma realm and the whole of empty space, as well as all worlds, teaching and transforming sentient beings throughout the future, everywhere across boundless worlds for innumerable kalpas, without ever ceasing.

Why is this? Because of attaining accordance with the unique qualities. Accordance with the unique qualities means that, relying upon the power of their original vows, they possess the power to abide perpetually with sentient beings.

Manjushri! This is called a summary explanation of the power of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, to teach and transform sentient beings. Were it explained more extensively, it could not be fully expressed even throughout all the kalpas of the future.

Manjushri! What is called the universal presence of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

Manjushri! It means that the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, are present throughout the worlds of the ten directions—in all worlds, all dwelling places, every world, every Jambudvipa, and every mote of dust.

Manjushri! Beyond fifty world-oceans are worlds as numerous as dust motes, and innumerable hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis of nayutas of all worlds as numerous as dust motes. In each world as numerous as dust motes, there are many distinct oceans of bodhisattvas of various kinds. In such numerous dwelling places, there is no obstruction. There is no obstruction among all sentient beings in the four continents, on the various Mount Sumerus, Great Mount Sumerus, Mount Cakravada, Mount Mahacakravada, in cities, villages, various lands, great rivers, and vast lakes. It remains thus, without difference, and yet this phenomenon occurs. Why is this? Because of attaining accordance with the unique qualities.

According to the minds of sentient beings and according to whichever sentient beings can be transformed, devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Shakra, Brahma, humans and nonhumans, bodhisattvas, and so forth, each see the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, present before them. Why is this? Because of attaining accordance with the unique qualities.

Manjushri! It is like the night of the full moon, when throughout Jambudvipa men, women, boys, girls, and all others see the full moon manifest. Yet that full moon makes no distinctions and is far removed from discrimination, being naturally so. All naturally see it, while the moon makes no distinctions and is far removed from discrimination. Why is this? Because of attaining accordance with the unique qualities.

Manjushri! The Buddhas, the Tathagatas, are likewise. Throughout the worlds of the ten directions, in all worlds and all the dwelling places of sentient beings, according to their minds and according to whichever sentient beings can be transformed, each sees the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, manifest before them. Yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are far removed from discrimination, and thus it naturally occurs. All naturally see them in this way, while the Tathagatas make no distinctions and are far removed from discrimination. Why is this? Because of attaining accordance with the unique qualities.

Manjushri! This is a summary explanation of the universal presence of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas. Were it explained more extensively, it could not be fully expressed even throughout all the kalpas of the future.

Manjushri! What is called the purification of the Buddha lands by the Buddhas, the Tathagatas?

Manjusri! This means that the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, throughout all the worlds of the ten directions, in their many dwelling places—within every world and every mote of dust—cause all worlds, together with their great oceans of meritorious adornments, to enter oceans of worlds as numerous as motes of dust. They possess innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of wisdom and meritorious adornments, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of paramitas, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of stages and grounds, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of dharanis, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of samadhis, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of liberations, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of unhindered, joyful eloquence, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of spiritual powers, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of great vows, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds possessing great oceans of diligent vigor, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that attain great oceans of peace and security, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter the great oceans of bodhisattva practices, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter the great oceans of the Tathagatas, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter the great oceans of accordance with the mental conduct of sentient beings, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter great oceans of kalpas, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter great oceans of worlds, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter great oceans of teachings concerning the three periods of time, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter great oceans of the three periods of time, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter great oceans of unwearied resolve, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

There are oceans of worlds that enable beings to enter great oceans of nondiscriminating wisdom, with innumerable distinct expositions of wisdom by which Buddha-lands can be purified.

Yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, remain unmoved in their original abodes. Why is this? Because they have attained the Dharma of immovability.

Manjusri! This is called a concise exposition of the lands of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, made without fear. If it were explained extensively, even throughout all the kalpas of future ages, it could not be fully expressed.

Every bodhisattva, every great assembly of bodhisattvas, and all the Buddha-Tathagatas, as numerous as dust particles, each attained innumerable, various kinds of great oceans of supreme means of leading beings to enter the mental practices that accord with sentient beings with which to adorn themselves. Because they had attained the power to uphold such various kinds of supreme means of leading beings to enter the mental practices that accord with sentient beings, they all beheld that number of Buddha-Tathagatas manifest before them.

Every bodhisattva, every great assembly of bodhisattvas, and all the Buddha-Tathagatas, as numerous as dust particles, each attained innumerable, various kinds of great oceans of supreme means of leading beings to enter teachings concerning the three times with which to adorn themselves. Because they had attained the power to uphold such various kinds of supreme means of leading beings to enter teachings concerning the three times, they all beheld that number of Buddha-Tathagatas manifest before them.

Manjusri! In worlds exceeding in number the dust particles in fifty great oceans of worlds, there were innumerable hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis of nayutas of great oceans of assemblies. Every bodhisattva, every great assembly of bodhisattvas, and all the Buddha-Tathagatas, as numerous as dust particles, each attained innumerable, various kinds of great oceans of supreme means of leading beings to enter the three times with which to adorn themselves. Every bodhisattva, every great assembly of bodhisattvas, and all the Buddha-Tathagatas, as numerous as dust particles, each attained innumerable, various kinds of great oceans of supreme means of leading beings to enter the tireless mind with which to adorn themselves. Because they had attained the power to uphold such various kinds of supreme means of leading beings to enter the tireless mind, they all beheld that number of Buddha-Tathagatas manifest before them.

Manjusri! In more than fifty world-oceans, there are worlds as numerous as dust motes, and innumerable hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis of nayutas of vast oceans of assemblies. Every bodhisattva and every great assembly of bodhisattvas, together with Buddha Tathagatas as numerous as dust motes, have all attained innumerable, various kinds of vast oceans that enable them to enter the supreme wisdom of nondifferentiation and thereby adorn themselves. Because they have attained the steadfast power that enables them to enter such various kinds of supreme wisdom of nondifferentiation, they are all able to behold the manifestation of Buddha Tathagatas in such numbers.

Manjusri! Thus, in brief, are described the rare characteristics attained through such foundations as practicing in reliance upon a good spiritual friend; arousing the resolve to strive diligently and vigorously; attaining a peaceful and secure mind; teaching and transforming sentient beings; receiving predictions and observing the precepts; entering the conduct of bodhisattvas; entering the conduct of Tathagatas; entering the conduct of sentient beings; entering the ocean of worlds; entering the ocean of kalpas; entering the Dharma of the three times; entering the arising of the mind; never becoming weary; the gateways of dharani comprising various kinds of wisdom; expounding the all-embracing virtuous minds of the Tathagatas; the practices of Samantabhadra;

the various Dharma characteristics of the mind of great compassion; the causes and conditions of the bodhisattva mind; revering good spiritual friends; the practices of arousing the resolve; practices of pure cultivation; the paramitas; knowing things as they truly are; attaining the paths that truly enter the powers; the wondrous power of equality; expounding the Buddha-Dharmas; steadfastly retaining and teaching them eloquently; the higher wisdoms; attaining nonattachment; attaining equality of mind; generating the wisdoms; manifesting responsive transformation; upholding the Dharmas; attaining great peace and security; penetrating the profound Dharmas; relying upon the Buddha-Dharma; abiding in reliance upon it; giving rise to loving-kindness; being free from timidity;

severing all nets of doubt; attaining the arising of the mind; and the inconceivable mind.

On what basis are the various skillful means taught? They are taught on the basis of the various kinds of wisdom of skillful means: attaining the samadhis, attaining entry into all things, attaining the liberations, the superknowledges, and the higher knowledges. All attain mastery and liberation of mind, limpid pools, beautiful towers, supreme adornments, minds that never regress, and minds that do not relinquish abiding in complete sincerity; their wisdom is like an ocean filled with precious jewels.

The bodhisattva who arouses the resolve attains a mind like a vajra, thereby arousing the resolve for the Mahayana, the resolve of equality, and the ultimate resolve, and attaining reverent minds that cannot be destroyed. Receiving predictions concerning all Dharmas, dedicating all roots of goodness, attaining higher wisdom, arousing a boundless and impartial resolve of equality, attaining treasuries, attaining the precepts, attaining masteries, and attaining swiftness—all spheres, all powers, and all fearlessness; completely endowed with immeasurable exclusive qualities; teaching and transforming all bodhisattvas...

All bodily karma and all bodies; attaining all verbal karma; arousing every kind of mind; minds that encompass all faculties everywhere; sincere minds; higher minds; all practices and all kinds of faith; entering the world of faith; entering all perfuming influences; attaining entry into all realms; entering conduct in accord with reality; entering accomplished conduct; entering the stages of bodhisattvas; the bodhisattvas’ Dharmas of meditative concentration; the Dharmas that advance toward the path; drawing near to good spiritual friends; attaining good spiritual friends; the path and what is not the path; what is measurable and what is immeasurable; accomplishing the path of seeing; becoming fully endowed with the merits of the path; cultivating all paths; and adorning all paths.

Manjusri! All these are expounded extensively in this way, yet the Buddha Tathagatas make no discriminations and remain apart from discrimination, while naturally being so. The Buddhas make no discriminations, remain apart from discrimination, and naturally being so, manifest in all manner of ways. Why is this? Because they are in accord with the exclusive qualities.

Manjusri! Therefore, throughout the worlds of the ten directions, in every world and every dwelling place, in each world and each Jambudvipa, the Tathagatas manifest simultaneously. According to which sentient beings can be transformed, those beings themselves will behold the Buddha Tathagatas. Yet the Buddha Tathagatas make no discriminations and remain apart from discrimination, while naturally being so. The Tathagatas make no discriminations, remain apart from discrimination, and naturally being so, manifest in all manner of ways. Why is this? Because they are in accord with the exclusive qualities and because the bodies of the Tathagatas are unobstructed.

Manjusri! This is a brief explanation of the boundless bodies of the Buddha Tathagatas. Were it explained in detail, it could not be exhausted even throughout all the kalpas of future ages.

Manjusri! What is meant by the universal knowledge and vision of the Buddha Tathagatas?

Manjusri! I shall give an analogy. Why? Because those endowed with wisdom rely upon analogies to understand meanings clearly.

Manjusri! Suppose there were a pond five hundred yojanas or a thousand yojanas across, filled with water up to the level of the ground. Immense lotus flowers and leaves entirely covered the pond’s surface.

A man sat in an iron chariot that traveled over those lotus flowers and leaves. Its iron wheels each had a thousand spokes, and the chariot was drawn by horses of surpassing speed, swifter even than a garuda. Although the iron chariot traveled with such speed, the water did not wet its wheels or spokes, or even the horses’ hooves.

Nor did the wheels or horses’ hooves damage the lotus flowers and leaves. In this manner, the man drove the chariot across the pond. At that very time, a great venomous serpent arose within the pond.

What happened then? At that moment, the wheels and the horses’ hooves turned together in accordance with that thought. The great venomous serpent coiled seven times around the chariot.

Manjusri! What happened then? In the ksana during which the great venomous serpent coiled once around the chariot, the bhiksu Ananda expounded the Dharma ten times universally to all and, moreover, instructed them in the meaning of that Dharma. What happened then?

In the ksana during which the bhiksu Ananda expounded the Dharma universally to all, the bhiksu Sariputra expounded the Dharma a thousand times universally to all, enabling sentient beings to understand. What happened during those moments?

In the ksana during which the bhiksu Sariputra expounded the Dharma universally to all, the great Maudgalyayana could pass beyond eighty thousand worlds. What happened then?

In the ksana during which the great Maudgalyayana passed beyond a single world, the Buddha Tathagatas in all worlds and all dwelling places, in each world and each Jambudvipa, throughout all times and places, whether earlier or later, descended from Tusita Heaven, left the household life, practiced austerities, sat at the place of enlightenment, subdued the hosts of Mara, manifested the attainment of perfect enlightenment, turned the wheel of Dharma, manifested nirvana, preserved the Buddha-Dharma, and manifested the extinction of the Dharmas.

The Buddhas can cause all followers of non-Buddhist paths, in the midst of every practice described in the Buddha’s past-life accounts, to behold these things simultaneously, without seeing any as earlier or later. Why is this? Because there is no obstruction; there is no obstruction because there is no differentiation; and there is no differentiation because there is no basis of reliance.

Manjusri! It is like a priceless garment made of a great wish-fulfilling vaidurya jewel, wrapped around the body. Through reliance upon that garment, all kinds of forms and appearances are seen, yet the great wish-fulfilling vaidurya jewel makes no discriminations and remains apart from discrimination, while naturally being so. Making no discriminations, remaining apart from discrimination, and naturally being so, it reveals all kinds of forms and appearances. Why is this? Because it is in accord with the exclusive qualities.

Manjusri! The Buddhas, the Tathagatas, the Worthy Ones, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones, are likewise able to transform and liberate sentient beings throughout the worlds of the ten directions—all worlds and all dwelling places—simultaneously, without any distinction of before or after. According to each thought that arises, sentient beings behold many different phenomena; yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are free from discrimination, naturally being so. Although the Tathagata makes no distinctions and is free from discrimination, naturally being so, diverse phenomena are nevertheless perceived. Why is this? Because the Tathagata is in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! It is like the moon or the sun, which can appear distinctly and without obstruction within the pure water held in various vessels throughout Jambudvipa, while the sun or moon itself does not move.

Manjusri! The Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, is likewise unobstructed throughout all the worlds of the ten directions. Sentient beings capable of being transformed and liberated, whose minds are pure, all behold the Tathagata. Yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, remain thusness itself, unmoving in Tusita Heaven. In this way, whenever thoughts arise in the minds of all sentient beings throughout all the worlds of the ten directions, they behold the Buddha present before them. Why is this? Because the Tathagata has attained irreversible wisdom.

Manjusri! It is like all sentient beings in the world: according to whether their karmic retributions are superior, inferior, or intermediate, their conditioned karma—superior, inferior, or intermediate—is fulfilled accordingly. Yet conditioned karma makes no distinctions and is free from discrimination, naturally being so. Though making no distinctions and free from discrimination, naturally being so, it brings many kinds of events to fulfillment. Why is this? Because it is in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! Because those sentient beings depend upon karmic retributions that are superior, inferior, or intermediate, they perceive the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, as superior, inferior, or intermediate. Yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are free from discrimination, naturally being so. Though making no distinctions and free from discrimination, naturally being so, they are perceived as superior, inferior, or intermediate. Why is this? Because they are in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! It is like a rainfall—uniform in color and flavor—that descends upon Jambudvipa. According to the vessels that receive the rainwater, it acquires various colors, flavors, and fragrances; yet the great rain makes no distinctions and is free from discrimination, naturally being so. Though making no distinctions and free from discrimination, naturally being so, there arise differences in color, fragrance, and flavor. Why is this? Because it is in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! The Dharma realm of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, is of a single flavor; yet according to the sentient beings capable of being transformed and liberated, the Dharma is perceived in many different forms. Nevertheless, the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are free from discrimination, naturally being so. Though making no distinctions and free from discrimination, naturally being so, the Dharma is perceived as diverse. Why is this? Because they are in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! It is like a place where the sovereign wish-fulfilling jewel, king of precious gems, appears: no iron is produced there, nor are any objects made of iron found there. Why is this? Because it is in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! Wherever the radiance of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, appears, there arises no light from fire, lightning, the sun, or the moon; there arises no light from any wish-fulfilling mani jewel, king of precious gems; nor does there arise the radiance of devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, Sakra, lord of the devas, the Great Brahma Heaven King, the Four Heavenly Kings who protect the world, and so forth.

In that place, the decrees of heavenly rulers are not enforced.

In that place, the four distinct castes do not arise.

In that place, the eight difficulties—such as the hells, hungry ghosts, and animals—do not arise.

In that place, the ten unwholesome courses of karma do not arise.

In that place, the various kinds of worldly pleasure do not arise.

In that place, other heterodox practitioners who lead evil lives, such as the Nirgranthas, do not arise.

Manjusri! Yet the Buddhas, the Tathagatas, make no distinctions and are free from discrimination, naturally being so. Because the Tathagata makes no distinctions and is free from discrimination, naturally being so, those things do not arise. Why is this? Because the Tathagata is in accord with the unique qualities.

Manjusri! This is called a concise exposition of the inconceivable and ineffable realm of the Buddhas, the Tathagatas. Were it explained extensively, even throughout all the kalpas of the future, it could never be fully expounded.
