At that time Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva said to the Great Assembly: "If, at the time when the Tathāgata enters Parinirvāṇa, in the age of the Final Dharma, sentient beings come into being with mouths like Bồng grass (mouths like reeds), then diseases and afflictions will respond upon them without measure. Precisely for this reason I now speak of the Treatment and Cure, which is likewise thus.

Whether there be Bhikṣus, Bhikṣuṇīs, Upāsakas, Upāsikās, good sons or good women—if they are able to receive and uphold this Dharma of Treatment and Cure that rescues sentient beings from suffering, know that this is none other than My Transformation Body, using the Mind of Great Compassion to rescue sentient beings; then I will come to that place and perform the various Dharmas so that there will be supreme efficacy. That person upholds the Great Compassion Heart, the Following-the-Mind, Self-Mastering Dhāraṇī of Divine and Wondrous Phrases, and is able to rescue the world from suffering. That person is like Me, no different from My own body.

If there be a man or woman of pure faith who can receive and uphold that Dhāraṇī Mantra for Rescuing from Suffering, and keep the Dharma's shielding of the world—although they treat the various illnesses, because they use the Mind of Loving-Kindness, they should with a wholehearted mind recite the mantra 108 times. By the power of Avalokiteśvara, they will not become attached or entangled.

If there be sentient beings who can uphold My Dharma, then that person, at the very moment of life's end, will have Me come swiftly to welcome and receive them; with boundless music, borne upon a precious cloud-chariot, I will swiftly cause them to be reborn into the World of Peace and Bliss, transformed into birth within a lotus flower, and before long they will become a Buddha."

Then Śākyamuni Buddha praised Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, saying: "Excellent! Excellent, Great Being! It is so! It is so! It is just as you have said. If there be a practicing virtuous gentleman or virtuous woman who gives one portion of medicine in charity to a person afflicted with illness, then in the present they gain blessings and the extinguishing of sins, and in future lives they gain inexhaustible blessed recompense; life after life, kalpa after kalpa, they receive a body without illness and enjoy all comforts and delights. In the realm of humans and in the heavens above, they receive all supreme benefits. In the realm of humans and in the heavens above, they obtain a measureless lifespan, and before long they will attain the Way."

At that time the Great Assembly in the gathering—the company of Bodhisattvas Mahāsattvas, Brahmā, Śakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, the Devas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, the host of Spirits, the Ghost Kings, Humans, Non-Humans—having heard what the Buddha said, were all greatly joyful; they believed and accepted it, bowed their heads in reverence, dedicated the merit, and respectfully practiced it.
