7. CHAPTER SEVEN: NAMES OF THE TATHAGATA
(Chinese Edition, First Part, Fascicle 12)
At that time, the Blessed One was in the land of Magadha, at the bodhimanda, having first attained perfect enlightenment. In the Hall of Universal Radiance, he sat upon the lion throne of the lotus treasury. His wondrous realization was wholly complete; he had utterly transcended the two modes of conduct, attained the Dharma of signlessness, abided in the dwelling place of all Buddhas, realized the equality of Buddhahood, reached the place without obstruction, acted without impediment, stood within the inconceivable, and universally beheld the three times.
He was assembled together with bodhisattvas as numerous as the dust motes in ten Buddha-lands. All were destined for Buddhahood after one more life and had gathered from other directions. They were all skilled in contemplating the realm of sentient beings, the Dharma realm, the realm of worlds, the realm of nirvana, the various karmic fruits and retributions, the successive activities of mind, all the meanings expressed in the literature of the mundane and supramundane worlds, the conditioned and the unconditioned, and the past, present, and future. They were skilled in contemplating all such dharmas.
The bodhisattvas thought: “If the Blessed One compassionately keeps us in mind, may he reveal and explain, according to our aspirations, these matters:
Buddha-lands, the abodes of Buddhas, the adornments of Buddha-lands, the Dharma-nature of Buddhas, the purity of Buddha-lands, the Buddhas’ teaching of Dharma, the essential nature of Buddha-lands, the majestic virtue of Buddhas, the accomplishment of Buddha-lands, and the Buddhas’ great bodhi.
“Just as the Buddha-Blessed Ones throughout the worlds of the ten directions, in order to bring all bodhisattvas to accomplishment, to ensure that the lineage of the Tathagatas is never severed, to rescue and protect all sentient beings, to cause sentient beings to abandon all afflictions, to illuminate all practices, to expound all dharmas, to eliminate all defilements, to forever sever every net of doubt, to cast away all cravings, and to destroy every object of attachment, expound the bodhisattvas’ Ten Abodes, Ten Practices, Ten Dedications, Ten Treasuries, Ten Grounds, Ten Vows, Ten Samadhis, Ten Superknowledges, and Ten Crowning Teachings.
They also expound the Ground of the Tathagata, the realm of the Tathagata, the spiritual power of the Tathagata, the fearlessnesses of the Tathagata, the samadhis of the Tathagata, the supernormal powers of the Tathagata, the mastery of the Tathagata, the unobstructedness of the Tathagata, the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind of the Tathagata, the eloquence of the Tathagata, the wisdom of the Tathagata, and the supreme excellence of the Tathagata.
