Children of the Buddha! Within fragrant-water oceans such as these, numbering ten ineffable multitudes of dust motes in Buddha-lands, are world-seeds numbering ten ineffable multitudes of dust motes in Buddha-lands. They all rest upon lotuses adorned with mani-king banners manifesting the forms of all bodhisattvas.

Each has uninterrupted adornments along its jeweled boundaries; each radiates light of jeweled colors; each is overspread and covered by clouds of light; each has its own adornments and distinct kalpas; in each, Buddhas appear; in each, oceans of Dharma are expounded; each is filled everywhere with sentient beings; each enters and pervades the ten directions; and each is sustained by the spiritual power of the Buddhas.

Within every one of these world-seeds, all worlds abide upon their various adornments, linked together to form a net of worlds. Their many distinct varieties are established everywhere throughout the Flower-Treasury Adorned Ocean of Worlds.

At that time, Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, wishing to restate this meaning, received the Buddha’s majestic power and spoke these verses:

The Flower-Treasury Ocean of WorldsIs no different from the Dharma realm; Its adornments are utterly pure,And it abides within empty space.
Within this ocean of worlds,The land-seeds are inconceivable; Each and every one is self-mastered,Each distinct and without confusion.
In the Flower-Treasury Ocean of Worlds,The land-seeds are skillfully arrayed;Their forms and adornments differ,And their various marks are not alike.
The Buddhas’ voices of transformation,In many varieties, constitute their substance; They are seen according to karmic power,Their land-seeds splendidly adorned.
Shapes like Sumeru, cities, and nets,Whirlpools, circles, and squares,And vast, wide-blooming lotuses—Realm after realm encircles the others.
Shapes like mountain-banners and towers,Or encircled structures of vajra—Such vast and mighty land-seedsAre inconceivable in this way.
Great oceans, pearl-fire,And inconceivable nets of light—Land-seeds such as theseAll rest upon lotuses.
Each and every land-seedHas ineffable nets of light;Within that light appear all realms,Pervading the oceans of the ten directions.
All those land-seeds,With their many adornments,Reveal lands within them,Seen everywhere without end.
The land-seeds are inconceivable,Their worlds have no boundary;Their many beautiful adornmentsAll arise through the Buddhas’ majestic power.
Within all the land-seedsAre inconceivable worlds; Some are forming, some decaying,And some have already been destroyed.
Just as leaves within a forestBoth grow and fall,So within these land-seedsWorlds arise and pass away.
Just as trees within a forestBear many different kinds of fruit,So, dwelling upon these land-seeds,Are many kinds of sentient beings.
Just as different kinds of seedsProduce fruits that all differ,Because karmic powers differ,The realms of beings are not the same.
Just as a mind-king jewelDisplays colors according to the mind,Because the minds of beings are pure,They behold pure lands.
Just as a great dragon kingRaises clouds throughout empty space,So the power of the Buddhas’ vowsBrings forth the various lands.
As an illusionist, through magic,Can manifest all manner of objects,Through the karmic power of beingsThe lands are inconceivable.
Just as colored imagesAre fashioned by a painter,So are all these landsCreated by the painter, mind.
The bodies of beings differ,Arising through distinctions made by mind;In the same way, among all lands,None are not produced by karma.
Just as the Buddhas are seenIn many different forms and colors,According to beings’ mental conduct,The lands they see also differ.
The foundations of the various landsAre overspread with lotus nets;Their appearances are not alike,And their adornments are utterly pure.
Those lotus netsAbide within the net of lands;Within their many adornmentsThe various kinds of beings dwell.
Within some landsThe ground is rugged and uneven;Because of sentient beings’ afflictions,They behold it in this way.
Defiled and pure alike,Immeasurable world-seedsArise according to beings’ minds,Sustained by bodhisattvas’ power.
Within some landsDefilement and purity are intermingled; Some arise through the power of karmaAs places where bodhisattvas teach and transform.
Some lands radiate lightAnd are formed of stainless jewels;Beautifully adorned in many ways,They are purified by the Buddhas.
Within every world-seedAre inconceivable kalpa-fires;Though appearing filled with emptiness and ruin,Those places ever remain secure.
Through the karmic power of beings,Many lands are brought forth,Resting upon wheels of windAnd also upon wheels of water.
Worlds are in themselves thus,Yet are seen in many different ways;In ultimate truth they have no birth,Nor do they perish or decay.
Within each and every thoughtImmeasurable lands are brought forth;Through the Buddha’s spiritual might,All are seen as pure and stainless.
Some lands are formed of mud and earth,Their substance exceedingly hard;Dark and devoid of light,They are inhabited by those of evil karma.
Some lands are formed of vajra,Defiled and filled with fear; With much suffering and little joy,They are inhabited by those of scant merit.
Some lands are made entirely of iron,Or fashioned from red copper;Their rocky mountains are rugged and terrifying,And they teem with evildoers.
Within some lands are hells,Where suffering beings are hard to save; They dwell forever in darkness,Constantly scorched by oceans of fire.
In others there are animalsOf countless ugly forms;Because of their own evil karma,They constantly undergo suffering and anguish.
Some contain the realms of Yama,Where beings forever suffer hunger and thirst; They climb immense mountains of fireAnd undergo exceedingly grave torments.
Some landsAre formed by combining the seven treasures;Their many palacesAre created by pure karma.
Observe the worldsWhere devas and humans dwell:As the fruit of fulfilled pure karma,They enjoy pleasures in due season.
Within every single poreAre inconceivable billions of lands;Their various marks and adornmentsHave never been crowded or confined.
The karma of beings differs,And worlds are many and immeasurable;Born within them, beings form attachmentsAnd experience unlike suffering and joy.
Some lands consist entirely of jewels,Ever radiating boundless light;Wondrous vajra lotusesAdorn them, pure and stainless.
Some lands consist of light,Resting upon wheels of radiance;Golden sandalwood fragranceAnd clouds of flame shine everywhere.
Some lands consist of lunar discs,With fragrant garments spread everywhere;Within a single lotusBodhisattvas sit in every place.
Some lands consist of jewels,Their forms and colors free of stain;Like the net of the celestial sovereign,Their light is ever radiant.
Some lands consist of fragrant substances,Or of vajra flowers;Mani light casts reflections,And they appear utterly pure.
Some inconceivable landsAre formed by revolving, interwoven flowers; They are filled with transformation Buddhas,While bodhisattvas shine everywhere.
Some pure landsConsist entirely of flowering trees;Beautiful branches cover the bodhimanda,And mani clouds spread throughout.
Some lands shine with pure lightAnd are formed of vajra flowers; The voices of transformation BuddhasSpread boundlessly into a net.
Some lands resemble a bodhisattva’sBeautiful mani crown;Other lands are shaped like jeweled thrones,Transformed from light.
Some are made of sandalwood powder,Some of light from the white urna,And some beautiful lands are formedFrom voices within the Buddha’s light.
Some pure lands are seenAdorned by a single light;Others are seen with many adornments—All lands are wondrous and extraordinary.
Some are embellished with beautiful objectsFrom ten different lands;Others are adorned with everythingFrom a thousand lands.
Some use a billion landsTo adorn a single realm;Their forms and marks are not alike,And all appear like reflected images.
Ineffable landsAdorn a single realm; Each object radiates lightThrough the power of the Buddhas’ vows.
Some lands are purifiedThrough the power of vows;Within every object of adornmentOceans of lands are seen everywhere.
Those who cultivate Samantabhadra’s vowsBring pure lands to fulfillment; The adornments of lands throughout the three periodsAll appear completely within them.
Children of the Buddha, contemplateThe awesome spiritual power of the land-seeds:The lands of the futureAre all made visible as if in dreams.
The worlds of the ten directionsAnd all lands of the pastAre present within a single realm,Appearing like magical illusions.
All Buddhas of the three periodsAnd all the Buddhas’ landsWithin a single land-seedMay all be beheld.
Through the spiritual power of the Buddhas,All lands appear within a mote of dust;Their various kinds are clearly seen,Like reflections without true substance.
Some landsAre shaped like great oceans;Others resemble Mount Sumeru—The worlds are inconceivable.
Some lands abide beautifully,Shaped like the celestial sovereign’s net;Others are shaped like forests,With Buddhas filling them.
Some are shaped like jeweled wheels,Others like lotuses; Some have eight beautifully adorned corners,And everywhere is pure.
Some are shaped like jeweled thrones,Some lands are triangular,Some resemble kharika,City walls, or the body of Brahma King.
Some resemble the celestial lord’s hair,Some the form of a half-moon,Some a mani mountain,And others the shape of the sun.
Some worldsAre formed like oceans of fragrance;Others form rings of light,Purified and adorned by Buddhas of old.
Some resemble the axle of a cart,Others a sacrificial altar; Some resemble the white urna,The ushnisha, or broad and long eyes.
Some lands are shaped like a Buddha’s hand,Others like a vajra pestle; Some resemble mountains of flame,Filled everywhere with bodhisattvas.
Some are shaped like lions,Others like sea monsters;Their essential natures all differ.
Within a single land-seed,The forms of its lands are endless;Through the power of the Buddhas’ vowsThey are protected and thus abide.
Some lands abide for one kalpa,Some abide for ten kalpas,Or even for more than hundreds of thousands,As numerous as dust motes in worlds.
Within a single kalpa,Some lands are seen to form and decay;Others do so for immeasurable, countless periods,Even unto the inconceivable.
Some lands have a Buddha,While some lands have none; Some have only one Buddha,While others have immeasurable Buddhas.
If a land has no Buddha,A Buddha from another landTransforms and comes into that realmTo manifest the deeds of a Buddha:
Descending in spirit from a heavenly realm,Dwelling in the womb and being born,Subduing Mara and attaining perfect awakening,And turning the unsurpassed Dharma wheel.
According to what beings delight in,The Buddha manifests many appearancesAnd turns the Dharma wheel for themIn accord with their faculties and dispositions.
Within every Buddha-land,A Buddha appears in the worldAnd throughout billions of yearsExpounds the unsurpassed Dharma.
Those who are not vessels for the DharmaCannot behold the Buddhas; But those whose hearts cherish and delight in itSee the Buddha everywhere.
Within every landA Buddha appears in the world; The Buddhas throughout all landsNumber inconceivable billions.
Each Buddha among themManifests immeasurable spiritual transformations,Pervading the entire Dharma realmTo tame and guide sentient beings.
Some lands have no light,But are dark and filled with fear;Their pain is like piercing knives,And whoever sees it is grieved.
Some have the light of devas,Some the light of palaces,And some the light of sun and moon—The net of lands is inconceivable.
Some lands shine by themselves,And some blaze with jeweled trees; There suffering has never existed,Because of sentient beings’ power of merit.
Some have radiant mountains,Some shine with mani light,And some are illuminated by lamps—All arise from the power of karma.
Some shine with the Buddha’s lightAnd are filled with bodhisattvas;Others are illuminated by lotusesOf brilliant and beautiful colors.
Some lands shine with flowers,And others with fragrant water;Burning incense and fragrant ointments glow—All through the power of excellent vows.
Some lands are illuminated by clouds,And others shine with mani gems; Some are lit by the Buddha’s radiance,Proclaiming delightful voices.
Some are illuminated by precious jewels,And others shine with vajra light;Pure voices resound afar,Dispelling every suffering.
Some shine with mani light,Some with radiant ornaments,And some with the light of the bodhimanda,Illuminating the entire assembly.
The Buddha radiates great light,Within which transformation Buddhas abound; That light shines everywhere,Pervading the entire Dharma realm.
Some lands are exceedingly terrifying,With cries and screams of sufferingAnd anguished sounds of lamentation; All who hear them are afraid.
The paths of hell and animal birth,And even the realms of Yama,Belong to these turbid, evil worlds.
Others constantly resound with joyful voices,Pleasing and consonant with the true Dharma; These are attained through pure karma.
In some landsThe voice of Shakra is always heard; In others, the voice of BrahmaAnd the voices of the world-rulers.
In some lands,Wondrous voices resound from clouds,While jeweled oceans, mani trees,And music fill the realms with sound.
Within the halos of the BuddhasAre endless transformation voices; The bodhisattvas’ wondrous voices, too,Are heard throughout the lands of the ten directions.
In inconceivable lands,The sound of the Dharma wheel turns constantly;Voices resound from oceans of vows,Wondrous voices of spiritual cultivation.
All Buddhas of the three periodsBring forth the various worlds; All their names are fully present,And their voices are inexhaustible.
In some lands, one constantly hearsThe powerful voices of the Buddhas,Expounding the grounds, liberations,And immeasurable teachings.
Through the power of Samantabhadra’s vows,Wondrous voices resound in billions of lands; Those voices thunder like a stormAnd endure throughout endless kalpas.
The Buddha, abiding in pure lands,Manifests voices of self-mastery;Throughout the Dharma realm of the ten directions,All beings are able to hear them.”
