The All-Embracing Mudrā of the Great Maṇḍala of the Twenty-Five Sections: Bring the two ring fingers and the two little fingers together and intercross them on the inside. Stretch the two middle fingers straight and have them support each other; place the two index fingers alongside the first knuckle of the two middle fingers; have the two thumbs support the middle knuckle of the two ring fingers. If there is a Summoning-Invitation, then move the two index fingers back and forth.

The Buddha said: "This Dhāraṇī and Mudrā are able to extinguish the ten evils, the five rebellious sins, and all grave offenses, and to accomplish the merit of all the white Dharmas. In performing this Dharma, one need not distinguish whether one is a layperson or one who has gone forth. If a layperson drinks wine and eats meat, has a wife and children, and does not distinguish between purity and defilement—if he only relies upon My Dharma, then there is nothing that he will not accomplish. The first is the Altar Dharma; the second is the Dharma of Recitation; the third is the Dharma of Accomplished Verification; the fourth is the Dharma of Vast Radiance and Sovereign Mastery; the fifth is to make the devas attain great supernatural power.

1) The Altar Dharma

The Buddha said: "If one seeks accomplishment, the performance of the Altar Dharma is not the same as that of the other Sections; one extensively cultivates offerings. Dig the earth to make the Altar, and use fragrant mud to smear and plaster it in its construction. Use only a single clean mirror, new and never before used.

Before an image of the Buddha, on the night belonging to the fifteenth day of the month, make offerings according to one's means, burning aṣṭaṅga incense together with pure, clean water. At the very first, one should purify the mind so that there is no pondering of thoughts; after that, form the Mudrā and recite the Dhāraṇī, empowering the mirror one hundred and eight times, and use a box to wrap and store the mirror, always carrying it upon one's body.

When one wishes to recite, simply take this mirror and place it before one's face, form the Mudrā and recite the Dhāraṇī, and, relying upon the mirror to make the Altar, one will then attain accomplishment."

2) The Dharma of Recitation

The Buddha said: "If one wishes to uphold this Dharma: on the night belonging to the fifteenth day, bathe and wash oneself clean, put on new, clean garments, face the East and sit in the half-lotus posture, placing the mirror directly in front. According to one's means, use incense, flowers, pure clean water, and the various offerings. First one should purify the mind and cut off thoughts; after that, form the Mudrā and seal it upon the heart, reciting this Dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times.

When one recites this Dhāraṇī, it is able to cause one who is short-lived to become long-lived (to live long); even an illness caused by Māra (an illness brought about by demons) can still be eliminated, how much more so other illnesses. If it is not eliminated, then there is no such case. Each month: the first day, the eighth day, the fourteenth day, the fifteenth day, the eighteenth day, the twenty-third day, the twenty-fourth day, the twenty-eighth day, the twenty-ninth day, the thirtieth day—on these ten days, each early morning, use clean water to rinse the mouth, face the East, and recite this Dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times, after which one may eat and drink.

Even if one has a wife and children and does not abstain from the pungent herbs (the five pungent herbs) and meat, it will likewise become verified."

3) The Dharma of Accomplished Verification

Each month on the eighteenth day, use the mirror together with forming the Mudrā and reciting. Apart from the ten days of abstinence, one should not face the mirror and form the Mudrā; only in the early morning, before one has partaken of the pungent herbs and meat (the five pungent herbs and meat), recite and uphold this Dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times. Thus for forty-nine days without interruption.

Whenever there is a matter of good or evil, of auspiciousness, or of calamity and change, then Cundī Bodhisattva dispatches two Sages to follow that person. In all matters of good and evil, empower seven times, wash the face and sprinkle the body, and contemplate within the mind, making a contemplation of joy. This will be able to cause kings, great ministers, and elders to give rise to a mind of reverence; seeing one, they will rejoice, as a vassal reveres the king, as a father loves his child, their minds following one's wishes, even to the point of having no regret over their own bodies and lives—all will be accomplished.

If there is a sentient being who is short-lived and beset by many illnesses: on the night belonging to the fifteenth day of the month, burn aṣṭaṅga incense and recite this Mantra one hundred and eight times. Then demons and ghosts, the frenzied who are possessed in their spirit, foxes, and evil ghosts will all manifest their forms within the mirror. At that time, if one wishes to command that they be slain, they are slain; if one commands that they be released, they are released. They will thus not dare to come, and that person will attain an immeasurable increase of lifespan.

If, again, there is a person who has no merit and no good marks, who seeks office without advancement, and who is oppressed by poverty and hardship: on each day among the ten days of abstinence, constantly reciting this Dhāraṇī is able to cause one, in this present life, to attain the rank of a Wheel-Turning King and to have one's pursuit of office be fittingly fulfilled.

If one wishes to summon the ranks of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Brahmā King, Śakra, the Twenty-Eight Sections of Devas, Pāpīyān (Māra), and so forth: face the mirror, form the Mudrā, and move the index fingers back and forth. In a quiet, still place, recite aloud in a high voice twenty-one times. Then the host of Worthies and Sages, Yama the King of the Dead, and the ghosts will, according to their dispositions, surely come and will not dare to depart first. All verifications will then be attained according to one's disposition.

If one wishes to know whether this Dharma will be accomplished or not: when one has completed seven repetitions, reciting the Dhāraṇī in accordance with the Dharma, then in a dream one will see the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas together with flowers and fruits; the mouth will vomit forth a black substance and then will eat a white substance—one then knows it is accomplished.

4) The Dharma of Vast Radiance and Sovereign Mastery

The Buddha said: "This Dhāraṇī has great power: it can move Mount Sumeru together with the great ocean's waters; empowering a withered tree, it can cause it to bring forth flowers and fruits. If one constantly recites and upholds it, then water cannot sweep one away and submerge one, and fire cannot burn one. Poison, weapons of war, and pestilent illness are all unable to harm one.

If one knows that within the earth there is a treasure-store of things: form the Mudrā and recite the Dhāraṇī, completing seven repetitions. Then the hidden store within the earth will of itself gush up, and according to one's wishes all will be made abundant.

If there is a peril of armies and battle arrays, of bandits and robbers: form the Mudrā and seal-point with it. Then, according to wherever one points, all will retreat and disperse.

If there is a person who has died, killed by ghosts and spirits: form the Mudrā and recite the Dhāraṇī, and use the Mudrā to seal upon the heart. Then the person who has died of grave illness will at once return to life.

If a dwelling is not at peace, being afflicted by ghosts and spirits causing calamity: empower four clods of earth and place them to suppress the four corners. Then those beings will at once depart.

If there is a person whose Six Kinfolk are not in harmony, whom others do not cherish or long for: in accordance with the Dharma, recite the Dhāraṇī directed toward harmonious union. Then those who hear the name and see the body will all give rise to joy and will not wish to part and leave.

Amid a great fire, use the Mudrā to point at the fire, and the fire will at once be extinguished. Use the Mudrā to point at water, and the surging waves will at once be stilled. In general, in all matters there is nothing prayed for that is not fittingly fulfilled—how much more, then, for one who is able forthwith to form the Mudrā, keep the abstinence-precepts, and uphold and recite in accordance with the Dharma: how could he not transform this Flesh Body (this body of blood and flesh) and journey to the Pure Lands in the four directions?..."

5) Making the Devas Attain Great Supernatural Powers

If one seeks long life, together with bestowing upon the devas the obtaining of the Immortal Medicine: before an ancient stūpa and within deep mountains, or inside a Pure Chamber, rely upon the mirror to make the Altar; for a full seven days or twenty-one days, burn blue lotus blossoms mixed with aṣṭaṅga incense. At the beginning of the night, recite the Dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times; then, when lying down to sleep, or within a dream, one eats the Immortal Medicine or the Dharma of Drawing-in Power.

Or, before one's face in the mirror, there is a light of five colors, and within the light there is Medicine; eating it according to one's wishes, one at once accomplishes the Way of the Immortals. The other meritorious powers number in the hundreds of thousands of koṭis—they cannot be told in full.

THE SEPARATE DHARMA OF CUNDĪ

First, with the left hand: bring the three fingers—index, ring, and little—into the palm of the hand, and use the thumb to support the nails of the three fingers, index, ring, and little. The right hand is likewise. Bring the two middle fingers together so that the fingertips touch. Recite the Dhāraṇī.

The Mudrā of Sealing the Boundary: With the two hands, right and left: the middle fingers and the ring fingers face inward and intercross with each other. Set the two little fingers upright; have the two index fingers stand together. The thumbs of the two hands each support the middle knuckle of the index finger. Recite the Dhāraṇī.

The Mudrā of Protecting the Body: Join the two hands together; have the two index fingers face outward and intercross with each other; the thumbs press alongside, supporting the middle knuckle of the index finger. The three fingers from the middle finger downward stand upright and joined together.

If one encounters thieves and bandits, robbers: take the Mudrā and crown it upon the top of the head. First seal the left shoulder, next the right shoulder; seal before the heart (the chest), seal below the head (the throat), and seal the space between the brows (the third star). Then this band will not dare to encroach or disturb.

The Mudrā of Curing Illness: The two index fingers and the two middle fingers face inward and intercross with each other. The two ring fingers and the two little fingers face outward and stand together; then join the palms, and the two thumbs each support the middle knuckle of the index finger.

The All-Embracing Mudrā: The two little fingers and the two ring fingers intercross within the palm of the hand; set the two middle fingers upright with the fingertips joined together; open and let the two index fingers touch, then slightly curl them; the two thumbs cover the ring fingers. At the time of the Summoning-Invitation, move the index fingers back and forth so that it resembles a Flower-Terrace, and recite the Dhāraṇī seven times. Use the Mudrā at the two upper arms, below the throat, the space between the brows, and the hairline. Again, hold this Mudrā level with the heart and recite the Dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times.

The Mudrā of Destroying the Celestial Māras: With the two hands, right and left, use the four fingers to cover the thumb within the palm of the hand, folding and clenching into a fist as if calculating. Thus, in any place that is to be feared, where one suspects there are ghostly spirits or venomous dragons, immediately form this Mudrā and recite the Dhāraṇī with a sound of wrathful indignation.

The Mudrā of Inviting the Ghosts and Spirits: The right hand: the middle finger covers the thumb and presses upon the Altar; bring the remaining fingers above, each stretched out like fangs. Slightly curl and fold the index finger and the little finger back and forth. Recite the Dhāraṇī seven times; by the third repetition, all the ghosts and spirits will have arrived.

The above is the Single-Section Ritual Manual of the Seven Koṭis (Saptakoṭi). In ancient times there was a Vinaya Master who, seeing the Abridged Recension state, "Whether layperson or one gone forth, drinking wine, eating meat, having a wife and children, not distinguishing between purity and defilement," held that the text's reading was erroneous and therefore deemed it a Spurious Text.

In the Tenmei era, the Śramaṇa LIANGXIONG (Ryōyū) discerned and explained that error, taking the Complete Recension as the principal text, while the Abridged Recension was a draft that had not yet been corrected.

The Śramaṇa HUILIANG (Eryō) printed and donated the Complete Recension so that it circulated in the world, but, taking an ordinary view, deemed it incorrect, and instead relied upon the draft as nearly correct in reaching his decision.

The Esoteric Excerpts, Questions and Answers, and other writings on Citation employ this Ritual Manual.

This year, gathering all the recensions stored at the Qinghe Cloister in Luobei (north of Luo), the Zhiji Cloister in Luoxi (west of Luo), the Yanming Temple in Hezhou, the Dangshan Airan Cloister Dayan, and so forth, examining them and then correcting them, we have therefore had both recensions printed and issued.

At that time: the Kyōwa era's change of reign-title, the year of the Metal Rooster (Xinyou), the month of Mid-Autumn.

Recorded by KAIDŌ of the Fengshan Miaoyin Xia Dhāraṇī Cloister.

Examined once through—CISHUN (Jijun).
