I now find within the Essential Texts of the Secret Treasury a method for the accomplishment of dream visions. For the sake of sentient beings in the age of the Dharma's decline, I shall therefore set forth the sequence of the ritual and its rules of observance.

Within a purified chamber, make a square altar, large or small as you wish. Upon that altar arrange the various offerings: incense, flowers, lamp oil, food and drink, the various kinds of fruit, butter and honey, and so forth—such things as these cannot all be told; according to the season, use whatever is fresh.

The practitioner, wearing new and pure garments, recites the verse of exhortation and invitation:

I now respectfully invite the Buddha-Eye,

Mañjuśrī, Wonderful Banner, and their retinues,

The Northern Dipper, the Seven Luminaries, and the Nine Holders,

The Twenty-Eight Constellations, the Twelve Palaces,

The Twelve Heavenly Kings, the Twelve Spirits,

The hosts of Yakṣas, Nāgas, and Rākṣasas,

The spirits of mountains, the spirits of rivers, the spirits of trees,

And all the virtuous spirits throughout the ten directions,

I exhort and invite you, by the power of a pure mind,

To come here and together receive these offerings,

To protect and uphold your disciple… (named…), to cut off all evil and unwholesome things,

And to accomplish auspicious dreams together with all his vows.

Next, recite the great dhāraṇī of summoning:

Naṃ mồ ác tác phạ đát la

Bát la để hạ đế

Đát tha nga đảng củ xa

Mạo địa Tích lị giả

Bát lị bổ la ca gia

Ta bà ha.

If there be any sentient being who recites this dhāraṇī, then at that time all the assemblies of Noble Ones, devas, nāgas, ghosts, and spirits will all rejoice in this matter and come seeking it out.

Next is set forth again the method for the accomplishment of auspicious dreams.

Bow in reverence toward the North, then give rise to mindful intention and recite, saying:

I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha,

Mañjuśrī, Wonderful Banner, the star of the Northern Dipper,

The Twelve Heavenly Kings, and the constellations,

That I may see and know auspicious dreams and accomplish my vows.

Recite the true word (mantra), saying:

Oṃ Ác Vị Ra Hùm Khư Tả Lạc.

If there be any sentient being who has seen an auspicious dream yet does not accomplish it, let him rely upon this teaching, calling to mind the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī and the Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner… When he lies down, let him recite this dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times; he will constantly obtain auspicious dreams and will be able to know matters of good and evil.

If there be a person who sees an auspicious dream-omen and wishes to accomplish it as it was in the dream, then let him empower this dhāraṇī seven times over food and drink; after partaking of those things, before long he will attain accomplishment—excepting only those cases where the dream arose from deluded thoughts and a restless, agitated mind, which cannot be accomplished.

Furthermore, whoever wishes to cut off and dispel inauspicious dream-omens, let him follow this method: likewise bow in reverence toward the North, then give rise to mindful intention and recite, saying:

I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha,

Mañjuśrī, Wonderful Banner, the star of the Northern Dipper,

The Twelve Heavenly Kings and the constellations,

May evil dreams be dispelled, and auspicious things be obtained.

Next, recite the dhāraṇī, saying:

Oṃ, Sắc trí lị (sắc trí lị) Ca lả rô bả Hồng Khiếm Tát phạ (khiếm tát phạ) ha.

If a man or woman of sincere mind constantly sees in dreams fierce and inauspicious omens, let him take wood and fashion it into the likeness of a human figure, empower it with this dhāraṇī seven times, and after three days of this, carry that wooden human figure away and cast it into the mountains or beside a great river; the fierce and inauspicious omens will then be extinguished, and the mind and spirit will be at peace and joy.

If there be a person who constantly obtains auspicious dreams, yet if he does not cultivate practice, then no matter how long, those dreams will not be accomplished, and afterward they will even cease to be.

Again, there may be a person who, though he sees fierce dream-omens, yet constantly engages in cultivation; then those fierce dream-omens cannot become reality, but in the end will be transformed into peaceful and auspicious matters. If one takes white thread, twists it into a cord, empowers it with this dhāraṇī, and ties twenty-one knots, then wears it upon the body, going out and coming in three times, there will be no more evil dreams.

Next, recite again the true word (mantra) of offering, saying:

Oṃ, A mộ khư Bổ nhạ Ma nĩ Bả nạp ma Phạ nhựt lệ Đát tha nghiệt đa Vĩ lộ chỉ đế Tam mãn đa Bát ra tát la Hồng.

If there be any sentient being who recites this dhāraṇī to make offerings to the Three Jewels, then it will manifest as countless kinds of offerings, as many as the clouds of heaven, as the great ocean, offered up to all the assemblies of Noble Ones.

Next, recite again the dhāraṇī for bestowing food, saying:

Naṃ mồ Tát phạ Đát tha nghiệt đa Phạ rô chỉ đế.

Oṃ, Tam bà la tam bà la Hồng.

If there be a person who recites this dhāraṇī, empowering it over food and drink, and then bestows it in charity upon all the kinds of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, spirits of mountains, spirits of rivers, spirits of seas, spirits of trees, and even all ghosts and spirits… then each one among them will receive forty-nine measures of food, measured by the kind of bushel commonly used in the country of Magadha, and thereby all will be fully satisfied.

Afterward, recite the verse of dedication, saying:

May all the assemblies of Noble Ones,

Together with their retinues,

Empower this disciple (named…).

Please return to your former abodes.
