Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the palace of the Noble Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara upon Mount Potalaka. That solitary mountain was formed of every kind of precious jewel, like the gold of Jambūnada, pure and undefiled; all the treasures of the Maṇi Jewel King ever radiated wondrously colored rays of light. There were also Kalpavṛkṣa wish-fulfilling celestial trees that constantly emitted asaṃkhyeya numbers of fragrances—of Surabhi, aloeswood, and sandalwood. The Kusuma flowers, soft and delightful, of marvelous hues, came drifting down, adorning all places everywhere.
There were also immeasurable hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, mahoragas, humans and nonhumans who came to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads in reverence, made offerings, and with respect and esteem praised him; single-mindedly with palms joined together they silently listened to the Dharma.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed Brahmā, the King, saying: "The Dharma spoken by the Tathāgata is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the end. With skillful language it expounds the profundity of the Dharma. With the mark of the pure conduct (brahmacarya) that is single, unmixed, perfect, and purified, it expounds the Dharma as is fitting for the benefit of sentient beings.
As for these one hundred and eight names of the Bodhisattva Noble Avalokiteśvara, if there be one who is able to hear them, then for hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of innumerable kalpas he will not fall into the evil destinies. Should that person have committed the five offenses of immediate retribution (ānantarya), the karma will be entirely eradicated, and life after life he will attain the Knowledge of Past Lives (pūrvanivāsānusmṛti-jñāna).
The One Hundred and Eight Secret Vidyā Names of the Noble Avalokiteśvara are these:

At that time, the Buddha addressed Brahmā and Indra (Śakra), saying: "If there be one who upholds, recites, and chants these One Hundred and Eight Secret Vidyā Names of the Bodhisattva Noble Avalokiteśvara, know that such a person, life after life, will constantly behold the Noble Avalokiteśvara. If he constantly upholds them, he will attain great wealth and nobility. He will attain: intelligence, valor, dignified bearing, a marvelous voice (a sound that is wondrous), and eloquence; he will constantly know the meaning of all the Dharmas, and will enter the maṇḍala.
As for all the siddhis of the mantras that he has sought, all will be accomplished. If he maintains mindfulness morning and evening, then forever he will have no sickness or suffering, no boils, scabs, ringworm, or wind-element ailments. After death, he will be reborn in the World of Ultimate Bliss (Sukhāvatī) in the Western Direction."
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed Brahmā, the King, saying: "If there be one who upholds the names of the Buddhas as numerous as sixty-two koṭis of sands of the Ganges River, and is moreover able for the whole of his life (to his life's end) to make the fourfold offering, does that person obtain a fruit of recompense that is great or small?"
Brahmā, the King, replied: "Very great. O World-Honored One! Very great, O Well-Gone One (Sugata)!"
The Buddha said: "If there be one who upholds the One Hundred and Eight Names of the Bodhisattva Noble Avalokiteśvara, even for but a moment paying homage and making offerings, then the fruits of recompense of these two persons are entirely the same, without difference.
O Brahmā, the King! Know that to uphold, recite, and chant the One Hundred and Eight Names of the Bodhisattva Noble Avalokiteśvara will yield immeasurable and boundless meritorious recompense such as this. How much more so for one who upholds, recites, and chants them for the whole of his life—the merit harvested, life after life, can never be exhausted."
At that time, when the World-Honored One had finished speaking these words, then Mahābrahmā the Heavenly King, Śakra the Heavenly Lord, together with the eightfold host of devas and nāgas, and all the sentient beings, having heard what the Buddha spoke, all faithfully received it and reverently put it into practice.
