Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling on Vulture Peak (Gṛdhrakūṭa) at Rajagriha (Rāja-gṛha), together with an innumerable assembly of bhikshus and ten kotis of bodhisattva-mahasattvas in the form of youths (Kumāra-bhūtaiḥ-bodhisatva-mahābodhisatva).
At that time the Blessed One addressed Shakra, Lord of the Devas: “Kauśika! This prajnaparamita possesses a profound import. It is neither one nor different; neither characterized nor without characteristics; neither grasped nor relinquished; neither increased nor diminished; neither afflicted nor unafflicted; neither abandoned nor not abandoned; neither abiding nor nonabiding; neither associated nor unassociated; neither defilement nor nondefilement; neither conditioned by causes nor unconditioned by causes; neither real nor unreal; neither Dharma nor non-Dharma; neither having a place of return nor having no place of return; neither the ultimate limit of reality nor not the ultimate limit of reality.
“Kauśika! Just as all dharmas are equal, prajnaparamita is likewise equal.
“As all dharmas are quiescent, prajnaparamita is likewise quiescent.
“As all dharmas are unmoving, prajnaparamita is likewise unmoving.
“As all dharmas are discriminated, prajnaparamita is likewise discriminated.
“As all dharmas are fearsome, prajnaparamita is likewise fearsome.
“As all dharmas are fully known, prajnaparamita is likewise fully known.
“As all dharmas have a single taste, prajnaparamita likewise has a single taste.
“As all dharmas are unborn, prajnaparamita is likewise unborn.
“As all dharmas are unceasing, prajnaparamita is likewise unceasing.
“As all dharmas are empty and illusory conceptualizations, prajnaparamita is likewise empty and illusory conceptualization.
“Form is boundless, and prajnaparamita is likewise boundless. In the same way, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are boundless, and prajnaparamita is likewise boundless.
“The earth dhatu is boundless, and prajnaparamita is likewise boundless. In the same way, the water dhatu, fire dhatu, wind dhatu, space dhatu, and consciousness dhatu are boundless, and prajnaparamita is likewise boundless.
“Vajra is equal, and prajnaparamita is likewise equal.
“All dharmas are indestructible, and prajnaparamita is likewise indestructible.
“The nature of all dharmas is unobtainable, and prajnaparamita is likewise unobtainable.
“The nature of all dharmas is equal, and prajnaparamita is likewise equal.
“All dharmas are without inherent nature, and prajnaparamita is likewise without inherent nature.
“All dharmas are inconceivable, and prajnaparamita is likewise inconceivable. In the same way, the Perfection of Generosity, Perfection of Morality, Perfection of Patience, Perfection of Diligence, Perfection of Meditative Concentration, Perfection of Skillful Means, Perfection of Vows, Perfection of Power, and Perfection of Wisdom are also boundless. When the three karmic activities are pure, prajnaparamita is pure. Thus prajnaparamita possesses a profound import.
“Furthermore, Kauśika, there are altogether eighteen emptinesses. What are the eighteen? They are: internal emptiness (Ādhyātma-śūnyatā), external emptiness (Bahirdhā-śūnyatā), internal-and-external emptiness (Ādhyātmā-bahirdhā-śūnyatā), emptiness of emptiness (Śūnyatā-śūnyatā), great emptiness (Mahā-śūnyatā), emptiness of ultimate meaning (Paramārtha-śūnyatā), emptiness of the conditioned (Saṃskṛta-śūnyatā), emptiness of the unconditioned (Asaṃskṛta-śūnyatā), emptiness without limit (Atyanta-śūnyatā), emptiness without alteration (Anādyagra-śūnyatā), beginningless emptiness [(ana)pakāra-śūnyatā], emptiness of intrinsic nature (Prakṛti-śūnyatā), emptiness of individual characteristics (Svalakṣaṇa-śūnyatā), emptiness of nonapprehension (Anupalambha-śūnyatā),
emptiness of nonexistence (Abhāva-śūnyatā), emptiness of the intrinsic nature of nonexistence (Abhāvasvabhāva-śūnyatā), and emptiness of all dharmas (Sarvadharma-śūnyatā).
