觀自在菩薩如意輪瑜伽
Chinese title:觀自在菩薩如意輪瑜伽
Now I, following the Yoga
Spoken in the VAJRAŚEKHARA SŪTRA
The MAṆI-PADMA Division
The DHARMA OF RECITATION ACCORDING TO ONE'S WISH
In order to cultivate this Samādhi
Or like Avalokiteśvara
First select the disciple
Belonging to a clan that reveres the Dharma
Beloved and respected by many people
Possessing wisdom, valiantly advancing
Resolved in Vīrya (Vīrya — Energetic effort)
Constantly never forsaking the Wisdom of Enlightenment
Filial and obedient toward father and mother
Serene faith in the Three Jewels
Joyfully cultivating the practice of Bodhi
In the Four Immeasurable Minds
Not interrupted even for an instant
Constantly delighting in the Mahāyāna Dharma
Abiding in the Bodhisattva Precepts
Making offerings to and revering the Ācārya
And all the Holy Ones
Accomplishing the power of firmness
The valor of a great man
Skillfully penetrating the Gate of Correspondence
Constantly delighting in the practice of Tranquility
Wisdom without fear
Adorning the body with the precepts of discipline
Diligently cultivating the Secret Vehicle
Reverently relying upon the Path of the Guiding Principle
Single-minded, turning to no other place
Constantly delighting to hear the Wondrous Dharma
Having once entered the Samaya
Receiving Abhiṣeka from the Master
Having obtained the seal of approval
In no long time he shall attain accomplishment
A disciple endowed with these marks
Only then may be granted transmission
This is indeed the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel
Able to accomplish all undertakings
As the Sūtra speaks of the dwelling place
A mountain slope with a flowing river
A pure Araṇya
A ravine or valley, according to one's liking
Removed from all perilous and fearful calamities
Making offerings according to one's ability
The practitioner faces toward the West
To the Sovereign King Maṇḍiṭa
Next, paying homage to the Buddhas of the other directions
Bowing the five limbs to touch the ground
Paying homage with reverence as in awakening
Having bent the knee and knelt long
Joining the palms, hollow in the middle
With sincere mind, fully expressing all
I, from the beginningless ages
Have wandered in birth and death
Now before the Great Holy Honored One
With all my heart I beg to repent
Now I too am thus
I vow to rely upon the empowering force
That all beings be made pure
By reason of this Great Vow
Both self and others attain Stainlessness
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Sarva bhāva, śuddha — sarva dharma sarva bhāva, śuddhe — Haṃ"
湡 辱矢向 圩益 屹楠 叻猣 辱矢向 圩砰曳
OMÏ SVABHÀVA ‘SUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHÀVA ‘SUDDHA UHAMÏ
The practitioner should next rejoice in the accumulated Merit and Wisdom of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (Contemplating the merit cultivated throughout the past lives of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as though done by oneself, and thereby giving rise to joy).
All the Buddhas of the three times
The Bodhisattvas and the holy assembly
Have accumulated roots of goodness
Joining the palms, I rejoice in all
As I too have accumulated
Rejoicing without any difference
Next, one should kneel with the right knee touching the ground, join the palms in the Lotus mudrā placed upon the crown of the head, and contemplate paying homage at the feet of all the Tathāgatas and Bodhisattvas.
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Padma — Vi"
湡 扔痧 酮
OMÏ PADMA VIHÏ
Having paid homage to the Buddhas, one sits at will in the full lotus, half lotus, or Cakravartin posture.
Having formed this Sitting Mudrā
Contemplate the Buddhas throughout space
One's own body, all as before
Abiding within that assembly of the Holy
The Calm and Insight (the two palms) from atop the knees
Whirl in a dance, joined level with the heart
Like a lotus flower not yet open
Contemplate paying homage to the Buddhas
_ Next, form the Samaya
Bind it firm and strong, level with the heart
Raise the Almsgiving-Wisdom (the two little fingers) and the Meditation-Knowledge (the two thumbs)
The Vajra-Lotus Mudrā
Penetrating the rank of those who hold the lotus
Having alerted the assembly of the Holy
Recite this Mantra, which is:
"Oṃ — Vajra padma samaya, stvaṃ"
輆 向忝 扔痧 屹亙伏 僬
OMÏ VAJRA PADMA SAMAYA STVAMÏ
By reason of forming this Mudrā
The Buddha says: "SONS OF THE SUGATA
You of Great renown
Of wondrous discernment and gracious acceptance
Recall your ancient Vow
Before the VAIROCANA HONORED ONE
Dare not contravene the command of the teaching
Empower us and cause us to be fulfilled"
_ Next, form the SAMAYA MUDRĀ THAT DELIGHTS AND GLADDENS THE MINDS OF ALL THE BUDDHAS AND TATHĀGATAS
Bind the ten fingers firm and strong
The Forbearance-Vow (the two middle fingers) joined and crossed in the middle
The Almsgiving-Wisdom (the two little fingers) and the Meditation-Knowledge (the two thumbs)
Each joined and raised upright
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Samaya, hoḥ, Surata, stvaṃ"
輆 屹亙伏 趌 鉏先凹 僬
OMÏ SAMAYA HOHÏ SURATA STVAMÏ
By reason of forming this Mudrā
The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
And all the Vajra-Holders
All manifest delight
_ Next, one should open the gate of the heart
Entering the syllables of Vajra Wisdom
Contemplate upon the two breasts
Right: ṬRĀ (泣 — ṬRA) Left: Ṭ (誆 — ṬÏ)
Like the door of a palace chamber
The supreme Vajra-Bandha
The three karmas issue forth at once
Strike the heart, opening the two syllables
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Vajra bandha trāṭ"
輆 向忝向神 泣誆
OMÏ VAJRA BANDHA TRÀTÏ
Sown as seeds from the beginningless
Accumulating manifold defilements
Now using the Mudrā That Summons Transgressions
Gather them together and shatter them all
Bind the ten fingers firm and strong
Extend the Forbearance-Vow (the two middle fingers) like a needle
Crook the Advance-Power (the two index fingers) like a hook
With mind contemplate summoning the transgressions
Contemplate that all those grave transgressions
Reveal their forms black as hair
And press the seal upon the heart
Having touched, recite the Mantra
Corresponding with the three karmas
Having thus been able to summon them together
Then perform the Dharma of Destruction
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Sarva pāpa ākarṣaya viśodhana samaya vajra Hūṃ jaḥ"
輆 屹楠 扒扒一溶仕 合夸叻巧 屹亙伏 向忝 嫟 切
OMÏ SARVA PÀPA AKARSÏAYA VI’SODHANA SAMAYA VAJRA HÙMÏ JAHÏ
Having summoned them into the palms
Then perform the Dharma of Destruction
The former Mudrā, interlocked within
Proclaim Haṃ (HŪṂ), binding the transgressions
The Forbearance-Vow (the two middle fingers) both extended straight
Bearing the syllable ṬRĀ ṬA (泣誆 — ṬRĀṬÏ)
Contemplate it as the Vajra pestle
Together they strike as though shattering a mountain
The forbearing phrase and the wrathful form
Are able to purify the evil destinies
Having recited, the Forbearance-Vow (the two middle fingers) strike
Twenty-one (21) times according to the rite (ritual measure)
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Vajra pāṇi visphoṭaya — Sarva pāya bandhanāni pramokṣaya — Sarva pāya gatebhyaḥ — Sarva satva māṃ — Sarva tathāgata vajra samaya — Hūṃ traṭ"
OMÏ VAJRAPÀNÏI VISPHOTÏAYA SARVA PÀYA BANDHANÀNI PRAMOKSÏAYA - SARVA PÀPAYA GATEBHYAHÏ - SARVA SATVA MÀMÏ - SARVA TATHÀGATA VAJRA SAMAYA HÙMÏ TRÀTÏ
Using this Gate of Correspondence
The ancient Buddhas, by skillful means, declared:
The transgressions accumulated by the three karmas
The immeasurable, gravest obstructions
Having performed this destruction
Are like fire burning dry grass
Sentient beings, constantly deluded and confused
Do not know this guiding principle
Therefore, out of the Tathāgata's Great Compassion
This Secret and Wondrous gate is opened
Next, one should form the entering mudrā
Entering the syllables of Tathāgata Wisdom
The two hands bound firm and strong
The Meditation-Knowledge (the two thumbs) within the palm
Take the two measures, the Advance-Power (the two index fingers)
Resting upon each other like a ring
Contemplate a lotus of eight petals before you
Upon it place the syllable A (狣)
By the adornment of the two points
The wondrous syllable becomes Aḥ (珆 — AHÏ)
White in color like Kha snow
Radiating a thousand rays of light
Contemplate, using the limbs Advance-Power
Mindfully placing the syllable to rest within the heart
The three karmas all set in motion
Recite this Mantra, which is:
"Oṃ — Vajra aviśa, Aḥ"
輆 向忝 狣合在 珆
OMÏ VAJRA AVI’SA AHÏ
Having contemplated it within the heart
The form of the syllable surpassingly luminous and wondrous
This is indeed the Body of the Dharmadhātu
The practitioner should contemplate and behold it
In no long time he awakens to Tranquility
The Dharma is originally never born
The Tathāgatas of the three times
The Body, Speech, and Mind Vajras
All employ wondrous skillful means
Held in the Vajra fist
Use this to close the gate of the heart
The syllable of Wisdom guarding firm and strong
Then crook the measures Advance-Power (the two index fingers)
Resting upon the back of the Meditation-Knowledge (the two thumbs)
Take the Mudrā and touch the chest
Then recite this Wondrous Mantra:
"Oṃ — Vajra muṣṭi Vaṃ"
輆 向忝觜泏 圳
OMÏ VAJRA MUSÏTÏI VAMÏ
The practitioner abides in equipoise (Samādhāna)
The two hands bound firm and strong
Placed upturned below the navel
The Meditation-Knowledge (the two thumbs) in the shape of a lotus
This is called the Samādhi Mudrā
Recite this Mantra, which is:
"Oṃ — Samādhi padme hrīḥ"
輆 屹交囚 扔榰 猭
OMÏ SAMÀDHI PADME HRÌHÏ
Breathing out and breathing in
Abiding in ĀNĀPĀNA (Ānāpāna)
Contemplate the Buddhas throughout space
Snapping the fingers, they alert Me
"Son of the Buddha! How will you
Accomplish Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment?
You do not yet know the Tathāgatas'
Wondrous Dharma of true reality"
Having heard the alert
The practitioner again addresses them, saying:
"What is the truly real?
I pray the MOST VICTORIOUS HONORED ONE will speak"
The Buddhas all rejoice
And utter Victorious Words thus:
"Excellent! Mahāsattva,
You are able to ask thus
You should contemplate within the Mind
The inner gate of the syllable Aḥ
Use the syllable to penetrate the Mind"
Recite this Mantra, which is:
"Oṃ — Citta prativedhaṃ karomi"
輆 才柰 盲凸吒尼 一刎亦
OMÏ CITTA PRATIVEDHAMÏ KARA UMI
One should silently recite it once
Then contemplate forming a disc of the moon
Wishing to advance with redoubled diligence
Again recite the Wondrous Mantra, which is:
"Oṃ — Bodhicittam utpādayāmi"
輆 回囚才柰觜瘑叨 仲亦
OMÏ BODHICITTAM UTPÀDA YÀMI
This is able to make the moon-disc of the heart
Perfectly full and utterly pure
In the midst contemplate a wondrous lotus
Upon it place the Vajra jewel
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Tiṣṭa maṇi vajra padma"
輆 凸沰 亙仗向忝 扔痧
OMÏ TISÏTA MANÏIVAJRA PADMA
Drawing it forth, vast and equal to space
Encircling everywhere throughout the Three Realms
Again recite this Wondrous Mantra
The VAJRA SPEECH, apart from sound:
"Oṃ — Sphara maṇi vajra padma"
輆 剉先 亙仗向忝 扔痧
OMÏ SPHARA MANÏIVAJRA PADMA
Here draw forth the wondrous lotus
Radiating a thousand flames of light
Within each and every ray of light
Immeasurable Buddha-lands
Within the lands there are wondrous lotuses
Contemplate the One Who Holds the Lotus
Holding the jeweled lotus, the victorious banner
From the banner pours forth the wondrous sound (the subtle, marvelous sound)
Even those of meager merit (?)
Shall fulfill all their vows
Abiding in that TRANQUIL SAMĀDHI
Bringing benefit to all sentient beings
Bodhisattvas of this kind
All abide in equipoise
From the LOTUS WOMB-TREASURY
They radiate a thousand wondrous rays of light
All bringing benefit to beings
The Perfection of Giving and the rest
Entering universally into all the Samādhis
The GATE OF SKILLFUL MEANS OF THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Out of compassion for sentient beings
They perform immeasurable skillful means
From birth unto Nirvāṇa
Turning the GREAT WONDROUS DHARMA WHEEL
All issuing from the WISH-JEWEL (the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel)
The Wondrous Dharma that has been spoken
All employing the WHEEL OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
Using the WHEEL as WONDROUS WISDOM
Able to sever the fetters
By turning the Wondrous Dharma Wheel
This is the path of Merit and Wisdom
Next, all rightly contemplate
Gradually realizing that WISDOM-LOTUS
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Saṃhara maṇi vajra padma"
輆 戌成先 亙仗向忝 扔痧
OMÏ SAMÏHARA MANÏIVAJRA PADMA
The Tathāgatas, wherever they dwell
All enter and become one body
Just as in a bright mirror
All the myriad images appear
The SELF-NATURE BODY OF THE DHARMADHĀTU
Abides within the Vajra-lotus
Then transform that jeweled lotus
Into CINTĀ BODHISATTVA (Cintā Bodhisattva)
In the hand holding the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel
A body with six arms, golden in color
All contemplated within one's own body
The crown topknot adorned with jewels
The crown bearing the Sovereign King
The hands displaying the gesture of Expounding the Dharma
The first hand: contemplating
Tenderly thinking of sentient beings
The second holds the WISH-JEWEL (the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel)
Able to fulfill all vows
The third holds the rosary
In order to rescue the suffering of the animal realm
The left presses upon Mount Radiance
Accomplishing immovability

Able to purify all that is contrary to the Dharma
The third, the hand holds the Wheel
Able to turn the Unsurpassed Dharma
Six arms: the VAST AND BROAD BODY (the vast and broad Body)
Able to roam through the six destinies
Using the skillful means of Great Compassion
To sever the sufferings of sentient beings
The practitioner contemplates thus
Seated within the moon-disc
The body pours forth a thousand rays of light
The crown and the back: a round halo of light
Again contemplate the moon-disc of the HEART
There too is a jeweled lotus
Using this, one is able to be firm
Unmoving, contemplating one's own body
In order to depart from all false notions
Recite this Mantra, which is:
"Oṃ — Dṛḍha tiṣṭa ratna vajra padma ātmaka uhaṃ samaya uhaṃ mahā samaya uhaṃ — Sarva tathāgata.

The Advance-Power (the two index fingers) in the form of MAṆI
The Meditation-Knowledge (the two thumbs) extended side by side
The Discipline-Method (the two ring fingers) also extended straight
The Almsgiving-Wisdom (the two little fingers) crossed and locked firm
Recite this HEART-WITHIN-THE-HEART
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Varada padme Hūṃ"
輆 向先叨 扔榰 嫟
OMÏ VARADA PADME HÙMÏ
Next, contemplate within the mouth of the HONORED ONE
Pouring forth the Secret words
Clearly forming a PATH OF SYLLABLES (a path filled with syllables)
Five-colored light shining wondrously
The supreme colors interspersed
Entering the mouth of the YOGI (Yogi — One who practices the Yoga)
Arrayed within the moon-disc of the HEART
Clear as rose-colored crystal
Each one pondered thoroughly
In accord with the principle, awakening accordingly
Abiding in concentration and cultivating
Entering the gate of the syllable A
Then entering the CONTEMPLATION OF THE WHEEL OF SYLLABLES
Contemplating all the syllables everywhere
This is named the RECITATION SAMĀDHI
Attaining Wisdom together with liberation
By reason of this correspondence
In no long time one accomplishes the All-Knowing Wisdom
If, with ORDINARY SOUND (the ordinary voice), one mindfully recites
It is most victorious, wondrous, and extraordinary
Abiding in the CONTEMPLATION OF THE TUTELARY DEITY
Do not give rise to a hasty mind
Neither high nor low
Neither too slow nor too rushed
The Wise One departs from discrimination
And from all minds of false notions
If one recites a lakṣa (100,000 times)
What is sought shall all be Siddhi (Siddhi — Accomplishment)
The two hands hold a rosary
Of crystal and lotus seeds
Conch beads and other jewels
Bright and beautiful without flaw
One should string one hundred and eight
Each bead reciting seven times
The HEART AND THE HEART-WITHIN-THE-HEART
Or the VIKURVAṆA (Vikurvaṇa)
Performing this Dharma to empower
Having strung the beaded garland
Right at the heart, each single measure
Together with SVĀHĀ in unison (in one voice)
One thousand one hundred and eight times
According to one's strength, recite
Four times or three times a day
This Dharma after the VICTORIOUS night
In the WISH-FULFILLING WHEEL Sūtra
Of the FUNDAMENTAL TEACHING, the Buddha has spoken
If one cultivates thus
In this very life one realizes the FIRST GROUND
After sixteen lifetimes
One attains UNSURPASSED BODHI
How much more the WORLDLY SIDDHI (the accomplishment of worldly matters)
If in this life things go not as one wishes
Having recited according to one's strength
Reform again the SAMAYA
Again perform the Eight OFFERINGS
Dispatching and sending off the Lord of Mantras
The two hands bound firm and strong
The Forbearance-Vow (the two middle fingers) in the form of lotus petals
From the heart to the face, release
Atop the crown join the Flower palms
Contemplate the HONORED ONE in space
Again the road returning to the palace
The Mantra is:
"Oṃ — Padma satva hrīḥ muḥ"
輆 扔痧屹玆 猭 鄖
OMÏ PADMA SATVA HRÌHÏ MUHÏ
Having dispatched and sent off the Holy Ones
One abides oneself in the VICTORIOUS TUTELARY DEITY
Or in a quiet and idle place
Reciting and reading the MAHĀYĀNA
The LAṄKĀ and the AVATAṂSAKA
The PRAJÑĀ and the GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Sūtra-teachings of this kind
Pondering them, then cultivating
Having recited and read the scriptures
At will walking, standing, sitting
In no long time one shall attain accomplishment
VAJRA-HOLDER has said:
This Ritual of Great Compassion
Does not depend on the day and the constellations (the asterisms)
The time, eating, bathing
Whether Pure or Impure
One should constantly never interrupt it
Swiftly departing from distraction
Refraining from idleness and tranquility
Not reckoning the affairs of the world
Having finished reciting, give rise to the vow
Form the SAMAYA MUDRĀ
Having paid homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
At will perform circumambulation
THE YOGA OF THE WISH-FULFILLING WHEEL OF AVALOKITEŚVARA BODHISATTVA
