佛說普賢曼拏羅經
Chinese title:佛說普賢曼拏羅經
Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in the city of Rājagṛha, together with an assembly of Great Bhikṣus numbering five hundred thousand who had come to attend.
There were also Great Bodhisattvas Mahāsattvas, all of whom were beings fully endowed with all the pure white Dharmas, who had attained immeasurable Wisdom and skillful means, and who could utter the roar of the Lion. The names of these ones were: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Ratnapāṇi Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (Jeweled-Seal-Hand Bodhisattva Mahāsattva), Joyful-Play Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Merit-Adornment Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Blessed-Virtue-Sound Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Great-Mind Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Virtue-Adornment Bodhisattva Mahāsattva. The assembly of Bodhisattvas Mahāsattvas of such a group all came to the gathering.
At that time, the World-Honored One, employing Great Loving-kindness and Great Compassion, for the sake of all practitioners in the present age and in ages to come who wish to cultivate the Secret Corresponding Dharma of Vajrasattva and to swiftly accomplish it, therefore proclaimed the Dharma of the Vajradhātu Great Maṇḍala.
The Buddha said: "If there be a good son who wishes to enter the Vajradhātu Great Maṇḍala, to cultivate the Samantabhadra Vajrasattva Corresponding Secret Dharma, and to swiftly accomplish it: First he should arouse a Mind that is supremely excellent, firm, solid, and valiantly courageous; he should seek out a pure Victorious Master of the world, and having requested and received the Abhiṣeka (Consecration), then, in the presence of that Master, he should receive the secretly-corresponding ritual methods and the Mudrās, each and every one without error, concentrating his attention and bearing them in mind, not allowing himself to err or forget. Thereafter, as he wishes, in a Victorious Place that is pure and tranquil, he may cultivate this Dharma in order to seek the Siddhi.
Having obtained the Victorious Place: First he should bathe and cleanse himself, purifying body and mind. Then, in that very place, he binds the Boundary (Sīmā) to protect the body. Thereafter, in accordance with the Dharma, using fragrant clay he smears and constructs the Maṇḍala, causing it to be in accordance with the Dharma.
Having finished smearing and constructing it: Within this Maṇḍala, he burns incense and scatters flowers, making every kind of offering. Facing this Maṇḍala, he performs the Contemplative Visualization. He visualizes that within that Maṇḍala there is the Fundamental Honored One, the Tathāgata.
Having caused him to manifest before his eyes, without arising from any place, he then takes powdered incense and smears his hands, forming the Mudrā together with the recitation of the True Words (Mantra).
_ Next he forms the Mudrā of Purifying the Three Karmas: With both hands he forms the Vajra Joined-Palms, and recites the Fundamental Secret Words three times:
Án, sa-phộc bà phộc, truật đà, tát lị-phộc đạt lị-ma bà-phộc bà-phộc, truật độ hám
湡 辱矢向 圩益 屹楠 叻猣 辱矛向 圩砰曳
OMÏ SVABHÀVA ‘SUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHÀVA ‘SUDDHA UHAMÏ
_ Having finished reciting this Secret Words, he releases the Mudrā. He further says: "Now I, from the beginningless past until now, have purified all the gross and weighty karmas of Body, Speech, and Mind. Having attained purity, I vow that all the undertakings I do this day may all be the Cause for entering into that Vajra Dharma, and only then do I direct my attention to contemplate the Fundamental Honored One, the Tathāgata. I vow that the undertakings which I have done may all be accomplished."
He then takes Refuge and praises. That is, he recites the Secret Words:
Án, tát lị-phộc đát tha nga đa ca dã, phộc chỉ tức đa, bát-la noa muội, phộc nhật-la, mãn na nam, ca lỗ nhĩ
輆 屹楠 凹卡丫凹 乙伏名朱柰 渨仕觡 向忝 向刡觡 一刎亦
OMÏ _ SARVA TATHÀGATA KÀYA VAK CITTA PRANÏANÀMÏ VAJRA VANDANÀMÏ KARA UMI
_ Having finished reciting this Secret Words, he then uses the four kinds of Reverence to pay homage to the Fundamental Honored One, the Tathāgata, in the Maṇḍala.
Having finished paying homage, he kneels upright in the long-kneeling posture, forms the Vajra Joined-Palms, and then says: "Now I arouse the unsurpassed Bodhi Mind. I beseech the Perfectly Equally Enlightened One, the Master of the Three Times, to gather me in with skillful means, causing me to rightly attain the three kinds of Disciplinary Precepts. For the sake of all sentient beings, employing the firm and solid power of the Tathāgata, I shall uphold and maintain the Three Jewels and benefit sentient beings.
Now I, within the Tathāgata's Vajradhātu Vajrasattva True-Suchness Corresponding Secret Dharma, following the Ācārya, receive the Great Vajra Family, and during the six periods cultivate and practice the four Bestowing-Dharmas. In the Great Jewel Family I receive the equal corresponding Dharma. In the Great Lotus Family I receive the subtle and wondrous secret Dharma of the Three Vehicles.
In the Great Karma Family I receive complete fulfillment of all the undertakings of offering. From the pure True-Suchness is born the Dharma of Great Bodhi. I arouse the unsurpassed Bodhi Mind.
Having received this Dharma, I shall cultivate and practice in accordance with the Dharma, and for the sake of all sentient beings shall act for their abundant benefit. For all sentient beings who have no Lord and Ruler, I shall become their Lord and Ruler; for those not yet liberated, I shall cause them to attain liberation; for those not yet at peace and joy, I shall cause them to attain peace and joy; for those who have not yet reached the other shore, I shall cause them to reach the other shore."
When the Practitioner has finished making the Vow, he then recites the Vajra-Gazing (Contemplating, examining closely) Secret Words:
MA (亙 MA) TRA (誆 TÏ) upon the two eyes—
He should contemplate them as the Sun and Moon.
The two hands form the Vajra Fist,
Both placed at the sides of the waist.
The Maṇḍala and the incense and flowers,
Together with the other offering substances—
By means of this, he pours forth and gazes,
Removing impurity and making them pure.
The Vajra-Gazing (Contemplating) Secret Words are:
Án, phộc nhật-la nại-lị sắt-trí, ma tra
輆 向忝 呠泏 亙誆
OMÏ _ VAJRA DRÏSÏTÏI MATÏ
_ The two hands forming the Vajra Bond can release all the Fetters and purify all the defiled and mixed seeds in the eighth Consciousness (Ālaya-vijñāna). The Vajra Bond Secret Words are:
Án, phộc nhật-la, mãn đà (3 times)
輆 向忝向神
OMÏ _ VAJRA BANDHA
By using this Mudrā and reciting the Secret Words, one's own self, from the beginningless past onward, will attain liberation from all the bonds and bindings of the Fetters, and will be caused to cultivate and perfect all merit.
_ Next he uses the Bond Mudrā to draw open right at the heart. He further recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la mãn đà, đát-la tra
輆 向忝向神 泣誆
OMÏ VAJRA BANDHA TRÀTÏ
By using this Mudrā together with reciting the Secret Words, one will attain the swift manifestation and arousal of the Vajra Wisdom of the Self-Nature.
He then uses the Vajra bell, shaking it three times. Next he contemplates that within his own body there manifests and arises the Wheel of the Letter Aḥ (珆 AHÏ), possessing great majestic virtue. By means of this, all Māra-obstructions cannot cause affliction or disturbance; moreover, he attains the firm and solid Vajra Mind that does not retrogress, and attains all accomplishments.
_ Next he recites the Heart Secret Words:
Hạ hạ hạ hạ hộc
成成成成趌
HA HA HA HA HOHÏ
Having finished reciting the Heart Secret Words, he then enters into the firm and solid Wisdom of Vajrasattva. He contemplates and visualizes that, to the very ends of the realm of empty space, all Natures are entirely equal, the same as those sixteen sounds.
Next he contemplates and visualizes at his own heart a full moon-disc forming. Within the moon-disc, he visualizes the letter Ka (一KA). When the letter has manifested clearly in every detail, he further visualizes outside the moon-disc a single letter Ka (一) revolving like a star, manifesting clearly before his face.
He further visualizes that the letter Ka within the heart's moon-disc gives birth to a Vajra lotus flower. Within the lotus flower there further arises the Lotus Mudrā. Upon this Mudrā, he contemplates a single letter Hūṃ (狫 _HÙMÏ); when the letter has manifested clearly in every detail, he further contemplates that his own body is the same as Vajrasattva, without difference and without error, unmoving and unwavering.
He then casts the Vajra-pestle and speaks these words: "Now it is not easy for Me to have this body. From the Vajra Dharma I am born as Vajrasattva."
_ Next he again visualizes his own body becoming Mahāsamayasattva. He then forms the Vajra Great Samaya Mudrā and recites the Secret Words:
Án, tam ma dụ hàm, ma ha tam ma dụ hàm
輆 屹亙伋曳 亙扣屹亙伋曳
OMÏ SAMAYA UHAMÏ MAHÀ SAMAYA UHAMÏ
He then uses the foregoing Samaya mudrā to seal the heart, the brow, the throat, and the crown of the head.
_ Next he forms the World-Honored One's Great Mudrā and recites the Secret Words:
Án, tam ma gia tát đát-phộc, a địa đế sắt-xá, sa-phộc hàm
輆 屹亙伏屹玆 狣囚凸沰 渢伐
OMÏ _ SAMAYASATVA ADHITISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ
_ He further recites the Secret Words:
Án_ Phộc nhật-la đạt lị-ma, tứ-lị
輆 向忝叻猣 猭
OMÏ _ VAJRA DHARMA HRÌHÏ
By forming this Mudrā and Secret Words, one's body, speech, and mind are caused to become the three Vajra karmas.
_ Next he forms the Accomplishment Great Mudrā and recites the Secret Words:
Án, tam ma gia, ác
輆 屹亙伏 嫙
OMÏ _ SAMAYA AHÏ
_ Next he visualizes within the heart's moon-disc the Vajra Wheel of the Letter Aḥ, together with the lotus flower, and on to the letter Hūṃ within the lotus flower—each and every one of these is a place of manifestation and arising within the Self-Nature Body of my Vajra Dharma.
Having visualized in this way, he then forms the Vajra Hook Mudrā: With both hands he makes the Vajra Fist, hooking the two little fingers back together in mutual reverse, and curving the two index fingers like hooks. He recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la câu xá, nhược
輆 向輈乃在 切
OMÏ _ VAJRA AMÏKU’SA JAHÏ
_ Next he forms the Vajra Lasso Mudrā: Without altering the previous Mudrā, he then hooks the two index fingers back together in mutual reverse. This is the Lasso Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la bá xả, hồng
湡 向忝扒在 狫
OMÏ _ VAJRA PÀ’SA HÙMÏ
_ Next he forms the Vajra Chain Mudrā: Both hands interlock crosswise on the inside. This is the Vajra Chain; he recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la sa-phổ tra, noan
湡 向忝厘巴 圳
OMÏ _ VAJRA SPHOTÏA VAMÏ
_ Next he forms the Vajra Bell Mudrā: Both hands form the Vajra Bond and shake three times as if ringing a bell. This is the Vajra Bell; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la phệ xá, ác
輆 向忝 狣甩在 珆
OMÏ VAJRA AVI’SA AHÏ
_ Next he contemplates that his own body is the same as the Wisdom Body of Vajrasattva. Having caused it to appear before his face, he then recites the Secret Words:
Nhược hồng noan hộc
切 嫟 圳 趌
JAHÏ HÙMÏ VAMÏ HOHÏ
_ Next he forms the Samaya Mudrā and then recites the Secret Words:
Án, tam ma gia, sa-đát-noan
輆 屹亙伏 僬
OMÏ _ SAMAYA STVAMÏ
Having finished reciting this Secret Words, he then again contemplates his own heart becoming a full moon-disc, and visualizes his own body entering into this moon-disc and becoming the Great Vajrasattva. He then recites the Secret Words:
Án, ma ha tam muội gia, sa-đát-noan
輆 亙扣 屹亙伏 僬
OMÏ _ MAHÀ SAMAYA STVAMÏ
_ Next he recites the Vajra Dharma Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la đạt lị-ma, tứ-lị
輆 向忝叻猣 猭
OMÏ _ VAJRA DHARMA HRÌHÏ
_ Having finished reciting this Secret Words, he further contemplates that the previous heart's moon-disc transforms into a red color, and in the very center is the Fundamental Honored One, the Tathāgata, with marks of excellence especially strange and wondrous: eyes like lotus petals, countenance smiling, compassionate and joyful, sitting serene and at peace.
Having contemplated in this way, he next forms the four Tathāgata Samaya Mudrās, each one using the Fundamental True Words to empower and bless the body.
.) First he forms the Vajrasattva Mudrā: Both hands form the Vajra Bond, and the two middle fingers are raised straight like needles—this is called the Vajrasattva Mudrā. He places this Mudrā at the heart and then recites the Secret Words:
Án, tát lị-phộc phộc nhật-lị, a địa để sắt-xá, sa-phộc hàm
輆 屹玆向忽 狣囚凸沰 渢伐
OMÏ _ SATVA VAJRI ADHITISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ
.) Without altering the form of the previous Mudrā, he curves the two middle fingers into the shape of a jewel. This is the Vajra Jewel. He seals this Mudrā at the brow and then recites the Secret Words:
Án, la đát-nẵng phộc nhật-lị, a địa để sắt-xá, sa-phộc hàm
輆 先寒向忽 狣囚凸沰 渢伐
OMÏ _ RATNA VAJRI ADHITISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ
.) Without altering the form of the previous Mudrā, the two middle fingers are like the shape of a lotus petal—this is called the Vajra Lotus Mudrā. He seals this Mudrā at the throat and then recites the Secret Words:
Án, đạt lị-ma phộc nhật-lị, a địa để sắt-xá, sa-phộc hàm
輆 叻猣向忽 狣囚凸沰 渢伐
OMÏ _ DHARMA VAJRI ADHITISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ
.) Without altering the form of the previous Mudrā, the two middle fingers cross straight against each other—this is called the Karma Mudrā. He places this Mudrā at the crown of the head and then recites the Secret Words:
Án, yết lị-ma phộc nhật-lị, a địa để sắt-xá, sa-phộc hàm
輆 一猣向忽 狣囚凸沰 渢伐
OMÏ _ KARMA VAJRI ADHITISÏTÏA SVÀMAMÏ
_ Next he contemplates and visualizes the Fundamental Honored One, the Tathāgata, within the previous red moon-disc. He then forms the Snapping-Fingers Summoning Mudrā. He crosses his forearms and makes the Vajra Snapping of the Fingers, and so summons and invites all the Buddhas equally, all the same. If with the left hand he snaps his fingers, all good matters are swiftly accomplished. If with the right hand he snaps his fingers, the Assembly is swiftly caused to gather. The Snapping-Fingers Secret Words are:
Án, phộc nhật-la tam ma nhạ, nhược
輆 向忝屹亙介 切
OMÏ _ VAJRA SAMAJA JAHÏ
_ Next he intones the Recitation of the 108 Names:

Because of intoning and reciting these 108 Supreme Verses of the Names, one attains all the Foremost Initial Abhiṣeka (Consecration). If there be a person who, toward these Names, is able to honor, esteem, and praise them, that is to uphold and maintain the Great Vajra. If one constantly chants and praises these Verses of the Names, one is praised by Vajradhāra (the Vajra-Holder).
It is precisely for this reason that I have first spoken of the Contemplative Visualization of the Fundamental Honored One, the Tathāgata.
Having caused him to be seen before one's face, one forms the Vajra Hook Mudrā and the Karma Mudrā to summon and invite.
Having caused him to descend and arrive, one then forms the Samaya Mudrā and further recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la đạt lị-ma, nhược, hồng, noan, hộc, tam muội gia, tát-đát-noan ma hàm
輆 向忝叻猣 切 嫟 圳 趌 屹亙伏 僬 赩
OMÏ VAJRA DHARMA JAHÏ HÙMÏ VAMÏ HOHÏ SAMAYA STVAMÏ MÀMÏ
_ He further recites the Vajra Dharma Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la đạt lị-ma tứ-lị
輆 向忝叻猣 猭
OMÏ _ VAJRA DHARMA HRÌHÏ
_ Next he has the two index fingers lean against each other, curved like the shape of a lotus petal—this is called the Vajra Dharma Samaya Mudrā.
_ Next the Great Karma Mudrā, the World-Honored One's Great Mudrā, and next the Abhiṣeka Mudrā.
_ Next, having presented the five Offerings, he then upholds the recitation of the Fundamental Secret Words to be cultivated. When the count is complete, he forms the Mudrās and recites the eight Offering Verses, making offerings to the Buddhas, Worthies, and Sages.
.) He then has both hands form the Vajra Fist, correspondingly placed at the sides of the waist, turning toward the left and slightly bowing the head. This is called the Joyful-Play Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la la tế
輆 向忝匠弛
OMÏ _ VAJRA LÀSE
.) Next both hands form the Vajra Fist, raising the two index fingers toward the brow and toward the back of the head, in the manner of binding a garland of flowers. This is called the Garland Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la ma lệ
湡 向忝交同
OMÏ _ VAJRA MÀLE
.) Next both hands are like the Vajra Palms, opposed to each other and spreading open the five fingers in the manner of presenting flowers. This is called the Song Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la nghĩ đế
輆 向忝輀包
OMÏ _ VAJRA GÌTE
.) Next both hands form the Vajra Fist. First the palms are joined hollow in the center, then in this manner he dances. This is called the Dance Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la niết-lị đế-dã
湡 向忝坲抖
OMÏ _ VAJRA NRÏTYE
.) Next both hands form the Vajra Bond, then spread open downward. This is called the Incense-Offering Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la độ bế
輆 向忝鉡本
OMÏ _ VAJRA DHUPE
.) Next he has the eight fingers form the Vajra Inner Bond, turned upward before the heart, opening them in the manner of presenting flowers. This is called the Flower-Offering Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la bổ sắt-bế
輆 向忝旦廑
OMÏ _ VAJRA PUSÏPE
.) Next both hands form the Vajra Bond, raising and opening the two index fingers. This is called the Lamp-Offering Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la lộ kế
輆 向忝 玅吐了
OMÏ _ VAJRA ÀLOKE
.) Next both hands form the Vajra Bond, placing them right upon the heart and opening them, rubbing. This is the Unguent-Offering Mudrā; he then recites the Secret Words:
Án, phộc nhật-la nghiễn đệ
湡 向忝丫秧
OMÏ _ VAJRA GANDHE
Thus these Secret Words and Mudrās possess great majestic power; one must set one's mind to the benefit of oneself and others.
Furthermore, the Sovereign Samaya Correspondence. He contemplates and visualizes that within the heart there manifests the Wheel of the Letter Oṃ (湡OMÏ). When the letter has manifested, he further visualizes that from within the letter Oṃ (湡) there pour forth jeweled canopies, jeweled banners, jeweled pennants, wrist-bracelets, ear-rings, necklace-garlands, garments, crowns, and so forth—a full array of jeweled adornments, and on to the hundred flavors of food and drink, clouds of the seven jewels, and so forth—each and every one, with directed mind, filling and pervading before the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and offering them up, spreading them out as offerings.
He then forms the Vajra Joined-Palms Mudrā, and with scattered diffusion visualizes offering to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions.
Having thus completed the offerings, he then takes the Recitation he has done, or the good deeds he has performed, and dedicates them, making the Vow. When this is finished, he then, in accordance with the Dharma, performs the Dispatching and Reverent Sending-off of the Worthies and Sages.
At that time, when the World-Honored One had finished speaking this Dharma, the Great Bodhisattvas Mahāsattvas, together with all the assembly of Great Bhikṣus in the Gathering, having heard what the Buddha taught, all joyfully believed and accepted it, paid homage to the Buddha, and then withdrew.
