七俱胝獨部法
Chinese title:七俱胝獨部法
The All-Embracing Mudra of the Twenty-Five Divisions of the Great Maṇḍala: Take the two ring fingers and the two little fingers and interlace them crosswise on the inside. Stretch out the two middle fingers straight and have them support each other; place the two index fingers alongside the first joint of the two middle fingers; have the two thumbs press upon the middle joint of the two ring fingers. If there is a Summoning-and-Inviting, then move the two index fingers back and forth.
The Buddha said: "This Mantra and Mudra are able to extinguish the ten evils, the five rebellious acts, and all grave sins, and to accomplish the merit of all the white Dharmas. In performing this Dharma, no distinction is made between the householder and the renunciant. Even if a householder drinks wine, eats meat, and has a wife and children—making no distinction between purity and defilement—provided he relies upon My Dharma, there is nothing that will not be accomplished. The first is the Maṇḍala Dharma; the second is the Dharma of Recitation; the third is the Dharma of Realizing the Efficacy; the fourth is the Dharma of Vast Radiance and Self-Mastery; the fifth is the subduing of the devas to attain great spiritual powers."
1) The Maṇḍala Dharma
The Buddha said: "If you seek accomplishment, the performing of the Maṇḍala Dharma is not the same as in the other Divisions, with extensive cultivation of offerings. Dig the earth to make the Maṇḍala, and use fragrant mud to smear and plaster it in building it up. Use only a single clean mirror, new and never before used.
Before an image of the Buddha, on the night belonging to the fifteenth day of the month, make offerings according to your means, burning Aniṣṭa (Aṇistha) incense together with pure clean water. First you should purify the Mind so that there is no contemplation or pondering; thereafter form the Mudra and recite the Mantra, empowering the mirror with the Mantra one hundred and eight times. Use a case to wrap and store the mirror, and always carry it upon your person.
When you wish to recite, simply take this mirror and place it before your face, form the Mudra and recite the Mantra; relying upon the mirror to serve as the Maṇḍala, you will then attain accomplishment."
2) The Dharma of Recitation
The Buddha said: "If you wish to uphold this Dharma: On the night belonging to the fifteenth day, bathe and cleanse yourself, put on new clean garments, face toward the East and sit in the half-lotus posture, placing the mirror directly in front. According to your means, use incense, flowers, pure clean water, and the various articles. First you should purify the Mind and cut off thoughts; thereafter form the Mudra and press it upon the heart, reciting this Mantra one hundred and eight times.
When you recite this Mantra, it is able to cause one of short lifespan to attain a long lifespan (long life); even an illness caused by Māra (an illness brought about by Māra) can still be removed—how much more so other illnesses! If it should not be relieved, there is no such case. Each month: the first day, the eighth day, the fourteenth day, the fifteenth day, the eighteenth day, the twenty-third day, the twenty-fourth day, the twenty-eighth day, the twenty-ninth day, the thirtieth day…
On these ten days, each early morning use clean water to rinse the mouth, face toward the East and recite this Mantra one hundred and eight times, and thereafter eat and drink. Even if you have a wife and children and do not abstain from the pungent (the five pungent herbs) and from meat, you will likewise attain the efficacy."
3) The Dharma of Realizing the Efficacy
Each month, on the eighteenth day, use the mirror together with forming the Mudra and reciting. Except for the ten days of abstinence, on which you should not face the mirror together with forming the Mudra, only in the early morning, when you have not yet partaken of the pungent and the meat (the five pungent herbs and meat), recite and uphold this Mantra one hundred and eight times. In this way, for forty-nine days without interruption.
Whenever there is a matter of good or evil, of auspiciousness, of calamity or transformation, then the Bodhisattva Cundī dispatches two Sages to follow that person. In all matters of good and evil, empower it with the Mantra seven times, wash the face and sprinkle the body, contemplate within the mind, and make a contemplation of joy: this will be able to cause kings, great ministers, and elders to give rise to a mind of reverence; upon seeing you they will at once be joyful, as a subject reveres the king, as a father loves his child; their minds will follow your wishes, to the point that even their bodies and lives they will not begrudge, and all will be accomplished.
If there are sentient beings of short lifespan and much illness: On the night belonging to the fifteenth day of the month, burn Aniṣṭa (Aṇistha) incense and recite this True Word (Mantra) one hundred and eight times; then the Māras and demons, the deranged disciples possessed by spirits, the fox-spirits, and the evil ghosts will all manifest their forms within the mirror. At that time, if you wish to instruct that they be slain, then they are slain; if you instruct that they be released, then they are released; thereupon they dare not come, and that person attains an increase of lifespan beyond measure.
If, furthermore, there is a person without merit, without auspicious marks, who seeks office without advancement, who is oppressed by poverty and hardship: each day, throughout the ten days of abstinence, constantly recite this Mantra; this is able to cause that, in the present life, he attains the rank of a Wheel-Turning King (Cakravartin), and that his pursuit of office is fulfilled and satisfactory.
If you wish to summon the host of the Four Heavenly Kings, Brahmā, Indra (Śakra), the twenty-eight Divisions of devas, and Pāpīyas (Māra)… face the mirror, form the Mudra, and move the index fingers back and forth. In a quiet, pure place, recite aloud twenty-one times; then the multitude of Worthies and Sages, Yama Rāja, and the ghosts will, according to your intention, come without fail and dare not depart first. All efficacies will then, according to your intention, all be attained.
If you wish to know whether this Dharma will succeed or not succeed: complete seven recitations, reciting the Mantra in accordance with the Dharma; then in a dream you will see Buddhas and Bodhisattvas together with using flowers and fruits, and your mouth will vomit forth a black substance and you will again eat a white substance—thereby you will know that accomplishment is attained.
4) The Dharma of Vast Radiance and Self-Mastery
The Buddha said: "This Dhāraṇī has great power and force: it can move Mount Sumeru and the great ocean waters; empowered upon a withered tree, it can produce flowers and fruit. If you constantly recite and uphold it, then water cannot sweep you under and submerge you, fire cannot scorch and burn you. Poison, blades and weapons, and pestilential illness all cannot harm you.
If you know that within the earth there is a buried treasure-store. Form the Mudra and recite the Mantra, completing seven recitations; then the hidden store within the earth will of itself gush up, and according to whatever you wish, all will be fully provided.
If there is a calamity of armies in battle formation, or of bandits and robbers. Form the Mudra and point with the Mudra; then, following wherever you point, all will retreat and be scattered.
If there is a person who has died, slain by a ghost or spirit. Form the Mudra and recite the Mantra, and use the Mudra to press upon the heart; then the one who has died from a grave illness will at once be brought back to life.
If the dwelling is not at peace, being troubled by a calamity caused by ghosts or spirits. Empower four lumps of earth with the Mantra and use them to suppress the four corners; then they will at once depart.
If there is a person whose Six Kinfolk are not in harmony, who is not cherished by others. In accordance with the Dharma, recite the Mantra directed toward harmonious union; then those who hear his name and see his person will all give rise to joy and will not wish to part from him.
In a fierce fire, use the Mudra to point at the fire, and the fire will at once be extinguished. Use the Mudra to point at water, and the surging waves will at once be stilled. In general, in every prayer and supplication there is nothing that will not be fulfilled and satisfied—how much more so, then, if one is able forthwith to form the Mudra, to maintain the precepts of abstinence, and to uphold and recite in accordance with the Dharma; how could one not transform this Flesh Body (this body of blood and flesh) and proceed to the Pure Lands in the four directions?..."
5) The Subduing of the Devas to Attain the Great Spiritual Powers
If you seek long life together with [requesting] the celestial beings to bestow the Elixir of Immortality. Before an ancient stūpa, or deep within the mountains, or inside a Pure Chamber, rely upon the mirror to make the Maṇḍala; for a full seven days or twenty-one days, burn blue lotus flowers blended with Aniṣṭa (Aṇistha) incense. At the first watch of the night, recite the Mantra one hundred and eight times; then, at the time of lying down to sleep, or within a dream, you will eat the Elixir of Immortality or [receive] the Dharma of Absorbing Power.
Or before the surface of the mirror there will be a radiance of five colors, and within the radiance there will be Medicine; eat it according to your wish, and you will at once accomplish the Way of the Immortals. The other meritorious powers number in the hundreds of thousands of millions—they cannot be told in full.
THE SEPARATE DHARMA OF CUNDĪ
First, with the left hand: take the three fingers—the index, the ring, and the little finger—and place them within the palm of the hand; use the thumb to press upon the nails of the three fingers—the index, the ring, and the little finger. The right hand is likewise. Bring the two middle fingers together so that the fingertips touch. Recite the Mantra.
The Mudra of Binding the Boundary: With the two hands, right and left: the middle fingers and the ring fingers are turned toward the inside and interlaced crosswise. Set up the two little fingers straight, with the two index fingers abutting each other. The thumbs of the two hands each press upon the middle joint of the index finger. Recite the Mantra.
The Mudra of Protecting the Body: Join the two hands together; the two index fingers, turned outward, are interlaced crosswise; the thumbs press alongside upon the middle joint of the index finger. The three fingers from the middle finger downward are set up straight and joined to each other.
If you encounter a thief, a bandit, or a robber. Take the Mudra and crown it upon the top of the head; first press the left shoulder, next the right shoulder, press before the heart (the chest), press below the head (the throat), and press the space between the brows (the third-eye point); then this band will not dare to molest you.
The Mudra of Curing Illness: The two index fingers and the two middle fingers are turned toward the inside and interlaced crosswise. The two ring fingers and the two little fingers are turned outward and abut each other; then join the hands together, with the two thumbs each pressing upon the middle joint of the index finger.
The All-Embracing Mudra: The two little fingers and the two ring fingers are interlaced crosswise within the palm of the hand; set up the two middle fingers straight with the fingertips joined; open and let the two index fingers touch, then slightly curl them; the two thumbs cover the ring fingers. At the time of Summoning-and-Inviting, move the index fingers back and forth, resembling a Flower-Dais, and recite the Mantra seven times. Use [the Mudra] to press upon the two upper arms, below the throat, the space between the brows, and the hairline. Then place this Mudra level with the heart and recite the Mantra one hundred and eight times.
The Mudra of Destroying the Deva-Māras: With the two hands, right and left, use the four fingers to cover the thumb within the palm of the hand, folding and clenching them into a fist as if reckoning a count. Thereupon, in all places that are fearsome, where one suspects there are ghost-sprites or venomous nāgas, at once make this Mudra, and with a voice of wrathful anger recite the Mantra.
The Mudra of Inviting the Ghosts and Spirits: The right hand: the middle finger covers the thumb and presses upon the Altar; take the remaining fingers above and stretch them all out like fangs. Slightly curl and fold the index finger and the little finger, [moving them] back and forth. Recite the Mantra seven times; by the third recitation, all the ghosts and spirits will arrive.
The above is the Ritual Manual of the Solitary Division of the Seven Koṭis (Saptakoṭi). In olden times there was a Vinaya Master who, seeing the Abridged Cundī recension, said: "Making no distinction between householder and renunciant, drinking wine, eating meat, having a wife and children, making no distinction between purity and defilement"—he thereupon held that the text as read was erroneous, and so deemed it a Spurious Text.
Within [the era of] Tenmei, the Śramaṇa Ryōyū (Lương Hùng) refuted that error, taking the Complete Cundī recension as the authoritative recension, while the Abridged Cundī recension was a draft that had not yet been corrected.
The Śramaṇa Eryō (Tuệ Lượng) printed and offered the Complete Cundī recension to circulate in the world; with a commonplace view he deemed it incorrect, and again relied upon the draft that was approximately correct in deciding [the matter].
The Secret Excerpts, Questions and Answers, and the like cite this Ritual Manual.
This year, gathering together the various recensions stored at the Seika Cloister of Rakuhoku (North of the Capital), the Chishaku Cloister of Rakusai (West of the Capital), the Enmei Temple of Kashū, the Aizen Cloister of Tōzan, the Daien [Cloister], and others… [I] examined and collated them, and so have printed and circulated both recensions.
At that time, the Kyōwa era changed its reckoning; in the year of the Metal Rooster (Tan-Dậu), in the month of Mid-Autumn.
Recorded by KAIDŌ of the Sōji Cloister of Myōon at Buzan.
Examined once through—JISHUN (Từ Thuận).
