I have now found within the Essential Text of the Secret Treasury a dharma for accomplishing dream-visions. For the sake of sentient beings in the age of the Dharma's decline, I will therefore set forth the sequence of the ritual, its observances and rules.
Within a purified chamber, build a square altar, of any size you wish. Upon that altar, arrange the various offerings: incense, flowers, lamp-oil, food and drink, the various fruits, butter and honey, and so forth—such things as these cannot all be told; according to the season, use whatever is fresh.
The practitioner, having donned new and pure garments, recites the verse of exhortation and invitation:
I now respectfully invite the Buddha-Eye,
Mañjuśrī, the Wondrous Banner, and all their retinues,
The Northern Dipper, the Seven Luminaries together with the Nine Holders,
The Twenty-Eight Constellations, the Twelve Palaces,
The Twelve Heavenly Kings, the Twelve Deities,
The hosts of Yakṣas, Nāgas, and Rākṣasas,
The deities of mountains, the deities of rivers, the deities of trees,
All the virtuous deities throughout the ten directions—
I exhort and invite you, by the power of a pure mind,
To come here and together partake of these offerings,
To protect and uphold your disciple (named...), to cut off all that is evil and wicked,
And to accomplish auspicious dreams together with all my vows.
Next, recite the dhāraṇī of Great Summoning:
Namo ác tác phạ đát la
Bát la để hạ đế
Đát tha nga đảng củ xa
Mạo địa Tích lị giả
Bát lị bổ la ca gia
Svāhā.
If there be any sentient being who recites this dhāraṇī, then at that moment all the assembly of Saints, the Devas, Nāgas, ghosts, and deities will all rejoice in this matter and come seeking it.
Next, again is spoken the dharma for accomplishing auspicious dreams.
Bow in reverence toward the North, then give rise to a mindful intention and recite, saying:
I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, the Saṅgha,
Mañjuśrī, the Wondrous Banner, the star of the Northern Dipper,
The Twelve Heavenly Kings, all the constellations—
May I see and know auspicious dreams, and accomplish my vows.
Recite the mantra, saying:
Oṃ Ác Vị Ra Hùm Khư Tả Lạc.
If there be any sentient being who has seen an auspicious dream yet it is not accomplished, let him rely upon this teaching and bring to mind the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva Wondrous Banner; when he lies down, let him recite this mantra one hundred and eight times, and he will always have auspicious dreams, and will be able to know matters good and evil.
If there be one who sees the sign of an auspicious dream and wishes to accomplish it as it was in the dream, let him empower this mantra seven times over his food and drink; after partaking of those things, before long he will attain accomplishment—excepting only those cases where, through deluded thoughts and a mind agitated and restless, the dream arises, for these cannot be accomplished.
Furthermore, whoever wishes to cut off and dispel the signs of evil dreams should follow this dharma; likewise bow in reverence toward the North, then give rise to mind and recite, saying:
I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, the Saṅgha,
Mañjuśrī, the Wondrous Banner, the star of the Northern Dipper,
The Twelve Heavenly Kings, all the constellations—
May evil dreams be dispelled, and auspicious matters be attained.
Next, recite the dhāraṇī, saying:
Oṃ, Sắc trí lị (sắc trí lị) Ca lả rô bả Hùm Khiếm Tát phạ (khiếm tát phạ) hā.
If a man or a woman of sincere heart often sees in dreams signs that are fierce and inauspicious, let him take wood and fashion it into the likeness of a human figure, empower this mantra seven times, and after three days thus, then carry that wooden human figure away and cast it into the mountains or beside the bank of a great river; the fierce and inauspicious signs will at once be destroyed, and the heart and spirit will be at peace and joyful.
If there be one who often comes to see auspicious dreams, yet if he does not cultivate practice, then no matter how long, that dream will not be accomplished, and may even afterward come to be no more.
Again, there is one who, though he sees signs of evil dreams, yet because he constantly maintains cultivation, those signs of evil dreams cannot become reality, but in the end turn into auspicious matters. If one takes white thread and twists it into a cord, empowers this mantra, then ties twenty-one knots in it and wears it upon the body, going out and in three times, then there will be no more evil dreams.
Next, again recite the mantra of offering, saying:
Oṃ, A mộ khư Bổ nhạ Ma nĩ Bả nạp ma Phạ nhựt lệ Đát tha nghiệt đa Vĩ lộ chỉ đế Tam mãn đa Bát ra tát la Hùm.
If there be any sentient being who recites this dhāraṇī to make offerings to the Three Jewels, then there will be transformed and manifested countless offerings, many as the clouds of heaven, as a great ocean, offered up to all the assembly of Saints.
Next, again recite the mantra of bestowing food, saying:
Namo Tát phạ Đát tha nghiệt đa Phạ rô chỉ đế.
Oṃ, Tam bà la tam bà la Hùm.
If there be one who recites this dhāraṇī and empowers it over food and drink, then bestows it upon all the kinds of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, mountain deities, river deities, ocean deities, tree deities, and even all ghosts and spirits, then each one among them will receive forty-nine measures of food, measured by the common bushel used in the country of Magadha; thereby all will be made full and satisfied.
After this, recite the verse of dedication, saying:
May the assembly of Saints
Together with their retinues
Empower this disciple (named...).
Now return to your former abodes.
