The disciple, named ….

Bows the head and takes refuge with reverence

Throughout the empty space of the Dharma Realm

To all the Tathāgatas of the ten directions

To the Teaching of the All-Embracing Yoga (Dhāraṇī-Yoga)

To the assemblies of Great Bodhisattvas

And I pay homage to the Bodhi-Mind

Which can perfect the accumulations of Merit and Wisdom

Causing one to attain Unsurpassed Enlightenment

Therefore I bow my head and pay homage

*) The True Words (Mantra) for Paying Homage to the Buddha are:

Án_ Tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa, bá ná, mãn na nẫm, ca lỗ nhĩ

OMÏ_ SARVA TATHÀGATA PÀDA VANDHANÀMÏ KARA UMI

_ Next, one should direct the mind to make offerings

The disciple, named …..

In all the lands of the ten directions

Whatever kinds of offerings there are

Flower garlands, lamps, perfumed unguents

Food and drink, banners, streamers, canopies

I, with sincere mind, offer them up

To all Buddhas and Great Bodhisattvas

Together with the ranks of the Sages and Saints

Now I, with utmost mind, pay homage

*) The Universal Offering Ākāśagarbha (Space-Treasury) Mantra is:

Án_ Nga nga nẵng, tam bà phộc, phộc nhật la, hộc

OMÏ_ GAGANA SAMÏBHAVA VAJRA HOHÏ

_ Next, one should repent

The disciple, named ….

Now, before all the Buddhas

And the assemblies of Great Bodhisattvas

From all past lives

Flowing onward from the Beginningless

Down to this very day

Deluded as to the Nature of True Suchness

Giving rise to false discrimination

Greed, hatred, delusion, the unwholesome

The three karmas and all the afflictions

Together with the secondary afflictions

Transgressing other Grave Offenses

Together with every kind of fault and sin

Slandering the Buddha, the Dharma, the Saṅgha

Plundering the possessions of the Three Jewels

Widely committing the offenses of Uninterrupted Hell (Avīci)

For immeasurable, boundless kalpas

Whose number cannot be remembered or known

Doing them oneself, or instructing others to do them

Seeing, hearing, and rejoicing along with them

Yet relying on the Truth of the Supreme Meaning (Paramārtha-satya)

The subtle and wondrous principle, true and real

The Three Periods—before, after, and in between

All of them are utterly unobtainable

One's own mind creates discrimination

Which is false and unreal

Using this as the skillful means of Wisdom

Equal and even like Empty Space

For all of these, I repent

Vowing never to dare conceal them

From the time of this repentance onward

I cut them off, daring never to do them again

Until the time of attaining True Enlightenment

Forever I shall never transgress

I beseech the Buddhas of the ten directions

And all the assemblies of Bodhisattvas

To take pity and bestow their protective grace upon me

Causing me to extinguish my sins and obstructions

Therefore I, with utmost mind, pay homage

*) The Mantra of Repentance for Extinguishing Sins is:

Án_ Tát phộc bá ba, nại hạ nẵng, phộc nhật la dã, sa phộc hạ

OMÏ SARVA PÀPA DAHANA VAJRÀYA SVÀHÀ

– Next, one should receive the Threefold Refuge

The disciple, named ….

From this day forward

I take refuge in all the Tathāgatas

The Five Wisdoms and the Three Bodies of the Buddha

I take refuge in the Vajrayāna

The Dharma of the Self-Nature of True Suchness

I take refuge in the Non-Retrogressing

The Bodhisattvas of the Saṅgha of Great Compassion

Having taken refuge in the Three Jewels

Forever I shall never take refuge

In the path of Wrong Views and Self-Benefit

Now I, with utmost mind, pay homage

*) The Mantra of the Threefold Refuge is:

Án_ Bộ khiếm

OMÏ_ BHUHÏ KHAMÏ

– Next, one should receive the Precepts of the Bodhi-Mind:

The disciple, named ….

Before the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

From this day forward

I vow to give rise to the Bodhi-Mind

I vow to deliver the boundless sentient beings

I vow to gather the boundless Merit and Wisdom

I vow to study the boundless Buddha-Dharma

I vow to serve the boundless Tathāgatas

I vow to accomplish the Unsurpassed Bodhi

Now that I have given rise to the Mind of Enlightenment

May I swiftly depart from all Natures and Characteristics

The aggregates (Skandhas), the elements (Dhātus), and the bases (Āyatanas)

The clinging to the grasper (subject) and the grasped (object)

All Dharmas are without Self (Anātman)

Equal and even like Empty Space

One's own mind from the very beginning is unborn

Because of Emptiness of Nature and Perfect Quiescence

Just as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

Gave rise to the Mind of Great Bodhi

Now I give rise to it likewise

With true sincerity and utmost mind, I pay homage

_ Next, recite the Mantra for Receiving the Precepts of the Bodhi-Mind:

Án_ Mạo địa tức đa mẫu đát bà na dã nhĩ

OMÏ_ BODHICITTAM UTPADA YÀMI

*) The Confession-Text for the Supreme-Vehicle Teaching on Giving Rise to the Precepts of the Bodhi-Mind:

The disciple, named …….. takes refuge in the Bodhi-Mind of all the Buddhas and all the Great Bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions. They are the Great Guiding Masters who are able to cause us to depart from the evil destinies, who are able to lead Humans and Gods into the Great Nirvāṇa. For this reason, now I, with utmost mind, prostrate in homage.

The disciple, named ….. Throughout the worlds of the ten directions, however many kinds of Offerings there are, such as: incense, flowers, streamers, canopies… the most excellent and supremely wondrous—I beseech to offer them all up to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and I beseech, with utmost mind, to prostrate in homage.

The disciple, named ……. From the Beginningless past until now, I have amassed every kind of Affliction and all the Secondary Afflictions belonging to the three poisons: Greed, Hatred, and Delusion, which torment body and mind. I have committed every evil deed of Bodily Karma, namely: Killing, Stealing, and Sexual Misconduct.

I have caused all the evil deeds belonging to Verbal Karma, namely: Lying, Speaking harsh words, Speaking embellished (frivolous) words, and Speaking divisive words. I have created all the evil deeds belonging to Mental Karma, namely: Covetousness, Anger, and Wrong Views. All these kinds of Afflictions have been amassed since the Beginningless, binding and defiling the Original Mind, causing Body, Speech, and Mind to commit immeasurable offenses, such as: killing one's father and mother, killing an Arhat, drawing blood from the body of a Buddha, destroying the harmony of the Saṅgha-assembly, slandering the Three Jewels, beating and binding sentient beings, breaking the Fast and breaking the Precepts, drinking wine, eating meat, and eating the Five Pungent Herbs (Onion, Chive, Garlic, Leek,

Asafoetida).

Offenses such as these are immeasurable and boundless, and cannot all be remembered or known.

Now I, with sincere mind, set forth my Repentance. Once the Repentance is done, thereafter I forever cut them off, daring never to amass them, daring never to do them again. I beseech all the Buddhas and all the Great Bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions to bestow their sustaining power and protective mindfulness, that they may cause us to annihilate every sin and obstruction.

The disciple, named ….. from this very body until the time of sitting at the Bodhi-Maṇḍala (Place of Enlightenment)—during that span of time, I beseech to take refuge in the three Unsurpassed Bodies of the Tathāgata, to take refuge in the Dharma-Treasury of the Mahāyāna Vaipulya (Expansive Teaching), and to take refuge in all the Non-Retrogressing Bodhisattva-Saṅgha.

Having taken refuge in the Buddha, having taken refuge in the Dharma, having taken refuge in the Saṅgha—from now on I resolve never to take refuge in the Two Vehicles or in the Outer Paths (Heterodox Doctrines). I beseech all the Buddhas of the ten directions to bear witness. We beseech, with utmost mind, to prostrate in homage.

The disciple, named …. Beginning from this body until the time of sitting at the Bodhi-Maṇḍala—throughout that span of time, I vow to give rise to the Unsurpassed Bodhi-Mind

I vow to deliver boundless sentient beings

I vow to gather boundless Merit and Wisdom

I vow to study boundless Dharma-Gates

I vow to serve boundless Tathāgatas

I vow to accomplish the Unsurpassed Bodhi

Now that I have given rise to the Mind, I should furthermore swiftly depart from the two characteristics: Self and Dharmas. May the Original Awareness of Luminosity be revealed; may the Wisdom of the Nature of Equality of True Suchness appear before my eyes; may I attain the skillful Wisdom and fully and perfectly complete the Mind of Samantabhadra. I beseech all the Buddhas and all the Great Bodhisattvas in the ten directions to bear witness. We beseech to prostrate in homage.

Homage to Akṣobhya Buddha of the Eastern Direction
