Namo to the all-beneficent Venerable Mañjuśrī Kumāra Bodhisattva Mahāsattva.

The Mantra is:

Ám, bà kế đà, na ma

OṂ_ VĀKEDA NAMAḤ

(Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism records this Mantra as

OṂ_ VĀKYEDA NAMAḤ)

Now I declare: the Method of the meritorious power of the Six-Syllable Mantra of Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva.

If there is a person who every day recites this Mantra seven times, then he will decisively eradicate and extinguish his Karmic Sins.

If there is a person who every day is able to recite this Mantra 108 times, then when that person is about to die he will behold Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva before his face.

If there is a person who upholds this Mantra and wishes to accomplish the Method: First, eat vegetables, or eat milk-porridge, or eat porridge cooked from barley grain, or eat dry rations made of barley, or go begging for food. Each day, at the three Times—early morning, the hour of Noon, and dusk—bathe and put on, separately, one set of clean garments, and then recite the Mantra six hundred thousand times, and the Method will be accomplished.

The person who paints that Image is to receive the Eight Precepts and is not to use glue boiled from the hides of beasts. Paint the image of Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva seated upon a lotus flower expounding the Dharma, complete with every kind of adornment, made in the form of a Youth (Kumāra) wearing a robe draped so as to bare the left shoulder. On the right side one should paint the Noble Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Holy Sovereign Beholder) seated upon a lotus flower, his hand holding a fly-whisk.

On the left side one should paint the Noble Samantabhadra Bodhisattva seated upon an elephant. On both sides, within the clouds in the empty sky, paint Mantra-Sages (Vidyādhara) whose hands hold flower-garlands. Below the painted image one should paint the mantra-holder, his hand holding an incense censer, gazing in reverence upon Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva.

On all four sides of that image one should likewise paint a mountain peak. Beneath the seat of the Bodhisattva one should make a flower-pond filled with lotus flowers. Thereafter, in front of the Stūpa of the Relics (Śarīra), facing the West, set up a wooden pillar.

When the vast and extensive offerings are completed, use butter to light the lamps, take 1008 Jāti flowers, and over each single flower recite the Mantra once and then scatter them upon the face of the image. There will then arise a sound: either one hears a subtle, marvelous tone, or the wooden pillar quivers. If one hears the marvelous tone, then one obtains accordance with one's heart (one's wishes are fulfilled). If the wooden pillar quivers, then one obtains victory in all debates, comprehends thoroughly the speech and teachings of all the World, and all sentient beings will love and delight in one. If this Method is not accomplished, then all other endeavors will likewise not be accomplished.

There is also a Method. Take Aloeswood (Agaru) eight finger-widths long, smear it with Storax oil (Turuṣka), and with smokeless charcoal of the Khadira tree… cast it into the fire, reciting the Mantra once over each. From the beginning of the night until the mark of dawn appears, burn it, and then one will behold Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva manifesting his body and coming of himself, standing before the face of the Mantra-Master. Whatever one seeks and longs for will be granted in full—excepting only the matter of lust and desire.

There is also a Method. Before the wooden pillar, use Sandalwood (Candana) and burn it without ceasing, reciting this Mantra, and then Mañjuśrī will manifest his body and come, and for that person he will expound the profound and deep Dharma, so that one attains Excellent Understanding (Adhimukti), is forever freed from all illness, attains sovereign mastery, and enters the Stage of the Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva-bhūmi).

There is also a Method. Use Red Sandalwood six finger-widths long carved into a lotus flower. Again, grind Red Sandalwood into powder, blend it with water, and smear it on; then recite a hundred thousand times, up until the night of the 15th day.

At the time of the full moon, before the wooden pillar take the flower-petals, and with both hands raise the flower and recite the Mantra, placing it upon the crown of the head. When the radiance appears, then take that flower, and it will cause that person to become like a person of sixteen years, with a body and features upright and dignified, of pure golden hue shining brighter than the light of the sun, his majestic radiance like that of a Youth of the Heavens (Deva), and all things accomplished.

The Mantra-Sages (Vidyādhara) will revere him; he will live long for one kalpa, and after the kalpa is ended he will be reborn in the World of Utmost Bliss (Sukhāvatī).

There is also a Method. At the time of a Lunar Eclipse, take the root of White Calamus (Vacā), and use Gomaya (cow dung), manure, milk, curds, and butter. With these five things mixed together, wash the Calamus root. When the washing is done, place it upon the leaves of the Aśvattha tree (4 leaves placed below, 3 leaves placed above). Recite the Mantra until it gives off smoke, or grows warm, or manifests blazing fire.

If it manifests warmth, then one will gain the joy of sentient beings and victory in all disputations and debates.

If it gives off smoke, then one will attain the state of Antardhāna (invisibility), living for ten thousand years.

If it manifests blazing fire, then one will be able to fly up into the empty sky, living for one Great Kalpa.

There is also a Method. Select a yellow cow, only one; gather all of its milk, curds… take the butter and place it within a vessel of refined and tempered copper, cover it with 7 Aśvattha leaves, and then recite the Mantra into it. If the three signs of the category of smoke as above occur, then it is accomplished. Thereupon drink this butter, and one will either gain great learning (much hearing), or Antardhāna (invisibility), or the power to fly in the empty sky.

There is also a Method. Take a seed of the Puṣyaka (Buang-kala) and, at the time of a Lunar Eclipse, place it within the eye, reciting this Mantra until the seed quivers. Then take three kinds of metal to make a gem with a bored hole, and set the seed to stand firmly within the bored hole of the gem; then Antardhāna (invisibility) issues forth from the mouth, and one immediately beholds.

There is also a Method. Take Clove (Lavaṅga) and hold it within the mouth, and when one has finished reciting this Mantra six hundred thousand times, then whenever one speaks with people one will obtain whatever one seeks and longs for.

There is also a Method. Eat milk, barley grain, or dry rations. Recite the Mantra one million two hundred thousand times, and one will become a Mantra-Sage (Vidyādhara).

There is also a Method. Go begging for food, not permitted to speak; when one completes one hundred thousand times one attains the Stage of Antardhāna. If one recites the Mantra to the full count of one koṭi, then one will behold the Noble One Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva expounding the Dharma in this manner, and he will decisively cause one to enter the Assembly of the Great Bodhisattvas who are bound to one more birth (eka-jāti-pratibaddha).

If every day one constantly recites this Mantra, then all one's hopes for benefit and joy will be accomplished.

There is also a Method. Take Benzoin (Guggula) and pound it into powder, blend it with butter to form pellets like small jujubes, making one hundred thousand pellets; over each single pellet recite the Mantra once and then cast it into the fire and burn it until all is gone, and one will obtain one hundred thousand gold coins.

There is also a Method. At a river that flows into the sea, a great river: bring ten thousand lotus flowers, over each reciting the Mantra once, and then cast them into the river until all are gone; then one will behold treasure-stores as numerous as the number of those lotus flowers. Obtaining those treasure-stores, one will receive and use them without exhausting them.

There is also a Method. Take sesame seeds blended with curds and butter. Over each single pinch recite the Mantra once and then cast it into the fire, up to one hundred thousand times; then that person will become wealthy, and is able to bestow all manner of things.

There is also a Method. Take Gomaya (cow dung) that has not yet fallen to the ground, with mud and earth, and make an Altar (Maṇḍala). Bring every kind of flower and scatter it thereon, and then sit; each day recite the Mantra 1008 times, then read aloud the Mahāyāna Sūtra, up until a full month is complete, and one will attain penetrating wisdom.

There is also a Method. Take Bezoar (Gorocanā), recite the Mantra into it 1008 times, and then smear it upon the forehead; then all sentient beings who behold one will rejoice. Recite the Mantra seven times into the hair on the crown of the head and then bind it up in a knot, and then all evil people will be unable to inflict harm.

There is also a Method. Take ten thousand seeds of the fruit of the Kiṭimāla; over each single seed recite the Mantra once and then cast it into the fire and burn it until all is gone, and then all illnesses will be eradicated and removed.
