七星如意輪祕密要經
Chinese title:七星如意輪祕密要經
Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling at Già Vương Ma Lan Đà (Gajavana Maranda) in the great Snow Mountains (the Great Snow Mountain, Mahā-Himavat), together with the Assembly of Great Bhikṣus, 1,250 in number, who came to attend. Their names were: Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Śāriputra, Mahākātyāyana Bhadra, Ānanda, Mahākāśyapa, Pūrṇa, and Maitrāyaṇī-putra.
There were furthermore Bodhisattvas, 10,800 in number, all of whom were Ones who had attained the Non-Retrogression of the Dhāraṇī (Total Retention) and Eloquence. Such Ones as these, amid Assemblies numerous as the sands of the Ganges, turned the Wheel of the Great Dharma.
At that time, the Envoy from within the palace-city of Ca Di (Kāśi) came to the place where the Buddha dwelt, bowed his head at the feet of the Buddha, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "King Prasenajit (Ba Tư Nặc) has sent me to come before the World-Honored One to beg for a stratagem. The great country of Kośala (Câu Thi La) has brought countless myriads of soldiers to lay siege to Kāśi. We, the king and his ministers, are greatly bewildered, and the people are all in dread. We beseech the World-Honored One to employ the power of Great Wisdom to rescue and protect us."
Thereupon the World-Honored One commanded Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva (Thần Thông Vương Bồ Tát, Abhijñā-rāja Bodhisattva) to go to the city of Kāśi and swiftly establish the Secret Gate of the Pātra Maṇḍala (Bát Đa La Đạo Trường) and the Seven-Star Fire Altar (Thất Tinh Hỏa Đàn)—that is, the Pātra Maṇḍala (Bát Đát La Đạo Trường)—made within a quiet chamber, and to erect the Seven-Star Fire Altar in an open place of bare ground. If, for one day and one night, this is performed in accordance with the Dharma, then that host of bandits will of itself withdraw and disperse.
That Dharma Rite is this: First one should Bind the Boundary (Establish the Sīmā), and thereafter perform the Dharma Gate of the Pātra (Bát Đa La).
"Namo, Wish-Fulfilling Wheel King, Great Teaching-Lord (Như Ý Luân Vương Đại Giáo Chủ, Cintāmaṇi-cakra-rāja, the Great Teaching Master)!
Now I reverently perform the Pātra Dharma (Bát Đa La). I beg the One who has the Heavenly Eye, the Heavenly Ear, and the One who has Spiritual Penetrations to bear witness to the performance of the Dharma."
Then one recites the Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Mantra (Như Ý Luân Chân Ngôn) seven times, and seven times empowers water with the mantra and sprinkles it upon the earth. Taking the Boundary-Marker (Giới Hậu) as the Binding of the Boundary—this is the Pātra (Bát Đa La). It is required that the Chamber be exceedingly pure and clean, and the surface of the ground level and even, like the face of a mirror that reflects.
In the very center is the figure of the Five-Colored Wheel (Ngũ Sắc Luân), like a wheel, having either ten paths (spokes) or twelve paths; within the bounds between the spokes of the wheel is drawn the emblem of the Vajra (Bạt Chiết La, Vajra). It is likewise upon the spokes of the wheel (Luân Bức). In the very center is placed the image of Wish-Fulfilling Wheel King Bodhisattva (Như Ý Luân Vương Bồ Tát, Cintāmaṇi-cakra-rāja Bodhisattva); in each interval between the spokes (Bức gian) are placed the images of the Seven Stars (Thất Tinh) together with Hārītī Mother (Ha Lị Đế Mẩu, Hārītī).
Before each Image are placed lamps, butter, incense, and every kind of offering. However many are the Names and Surnames of the persons, they are all drawn upon the Natal Star (Bản Tinh). The Ācārya sits at the seat of the wheel, and one by one declares aloud the accomplishment of the Dharma Rite, empowering through recitation; at one Seat one recites 108 times, while in Contemplative Mindfulness one need not count the times.
As for the Fire Altar (Hỏa Đàn): in the ground one makes a fire-hearth, either one cubit wide or two cubits. Then one empowers one person, either an Upāsaka or an Upāsikā, who, wearing clean garments, serves as the Natal Star (Bản Tinh), with food and drink together with butter, honey, incense, and medicine. If there appears a strange and extraordinary light that flickers and moves, then accomplishment is attained.
Whether it be a pure Ācārya, or the king, or a minister, on down to a common person who himself performs the Fire Altar and makes entreaty, then according to that wish and vow he straightaway attains accomplishment.
At that time Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva, receiving the Sacred Instruction, went to the great city of Kāśi, entered the palace, and one by one performed the Dharma; then thunder roared and lightning struck, causing the army of bandits to be destroyed and dispersed. The king and ministers of the city of Kāśi rejoiced, and the people were at peace and ease.
Then Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva returned to the place where the Buddha dwelt, bowed his head at the feet of the Buddha, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "How marvelous, World-Honored One! This secret Dharma Gate is beyond discussion and conception! Where does Wish-Fulfilling Wheel King Bodhisattva dwell at this present day? We would, relying upon the majestic power of the Tathāgata, go to that World to bow our heads in reverence to Wish-Fulfilling Wheel King Bodhisattva."
The Buddha said to Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva: "Excellent! Excellent! In the due South there is a World named Seven-Jewel Wheel-Turning King (Thất Bảo Chuyển Luân Vương, Saptaratna-cakravarti-rāja). That Bodhisattva dwells upon a wheel of the seven jewels, having as Dharma-Protectors the Seven Stars (Thất Tinh) together with the assemblies of Devas surrounding him. He turns the Wheel of the Dharma to rescue and deliver sentient beings."
Then Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! By what cause and condition is it that not only must one Contemplate and be mindful of Wish-Fulfilling Wheel King Bodhisattva, but one must furthermore pay reverence to the company of the Natal Stars (Bản Tinh) such as these?"
The Buddha said: "In ages past, the Buddha Dīpaṃkara (Nhiên Đăng) received this Dharma Gate. The Seven Stars are Star-Spirits who descended from above in the Heavens, and Hārī (Ha Lợi) is a Great Spirit who came up from below the earth; together they vowed, saying: 'We pray to protect and uphold this Great Dharma. If there be one who recites and performs this Dharma, we will come first of all to help bring the Dharma Rite to accomplishment.' By reason of this cause and condition, the Performance of the Dharma has been preserved and transmitted."
Then Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva, relying upon the great spiritual power of the Buddha, went to that World, bowed his head in reverence to Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Bodhisattva, and then said:
"We, in the Sahā World (Thế Giới Ta Bà),
Cultivate and study the gate of the Tathāgata's Causal Ground;
We rescued and delivered the King of Kāśi, Bā Tư (Kāśi-Vāsi);
By reason of this cause and condition we pay reverence to the Benevolent One.
Seven-Jewel-Adorned Jeweled-Wheel King,
Bodhisattva whose excellent marks are beyond discussion,
In Dependent Recompense and Direct Recompense complete with surpassing wonder—
Now do I reverently bow to the Wish-Fulfilling Wheel."
At that time Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Bodhisattva spoke these verses, saying:
"Now have I cultivated the Bodhisattva Path,
Rescuing sentient beings from the long night of suffering;
Now I sit adorned upon the Wish-Fulfilling Wheel,
Causing all sentient beings to be likewise.
However many sentient beings have wishes and vows,
Now I, the Wish-Fulfilling Jeweled-Wheel King,
According to each kind bestow upon them joy,
So that in mind there is nothing that is not according to their wish.
If there be sentient beings within the World
Who wish to penetrate and master the Path of the Unconditioned (Asaṃskṛta),
Yet whose karmic obstructions are deep and thick, so it is not accomplished—
I employ the jeweled Wheel to cause them to awaken.
If there be a World wherein arise the Three Calamities (Tam Tai),
And the people and the very soil are without peace and ease,
If there be one therein who performs My Dharma,
The Wish-Fulfilling Dharma-Wheel grants great bliss.
If there be a country afflicted by the calamity of famine,
And all the people are without peace and joy,
If one performs My Pātra Dharma (Bát Đa),
The Wish-Fulfilling Sacred Wheel is able to rescue and aid.
If there be a World invaded by bandits,
Beset and encircled on the four quarters, without security,
If within the country there be one who performs My Dharma,
The Wish-Fulfilling Sacred Wheel grants peace and ease.
If there be sentient beings within the World
Who fall afoul of the King's law and are imprisoned,
If they perform My Great Pātra Dharma (Bát Đa La),
The Wish-Fulfilling Sacred Wheel is able to rescue and aid.
If there be sentient beings within the World
Who are blind, deaf, lame and crippled, with every kind of illness,
If they recite My Great Pātra Dharma (Bát Đát La),
The Wish-Fulfilling Sacred Wheel is able to rescue and aid.
If there be sentient beings within the World
Who wish to be wealthy and seek riches and fortune,
If they perform My Great Pātra Dharma (Bát Đát La),
The Wish-Fulfilling Sacred Wheel grants them according to their wish.
If there be such a Wish-Fulfilling Wheel as this,
All sins and obstructions are entirely removed,
All things auspicious and felicitous descend and arrive,
And of every suffering there is none that is not uprooted entirely.
The Devas, Nāgas, and Spirits, together with the human realm,
And all sentient beings who Take Refuge—
He does not, according to that mind, fall into false speech.
That Dharma is able to remove all sins,
To increase and develop all manner of merits;
Sovereignly it is able to illumine the hundred paths,
Accomplishing all the wishes of sentient beings."
At that time Spiritual-Penetration-King Bodhisattva bowed his head in reverence to the Sacred King, and then returned to his own land, single-mindedly receiving and upholding the Mantra of this secret Dharma Gate, the Mahā-Pātra (Ma Ha Bát Đát La), which is beyond discussion and conception.

Seven-Star Original Protection Mudrā (Thất Tinh Bản Hộ Ấn) — Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Original Mudrā (Như Ý Luân Bản Ấn) — Long-Recitation Mantra (Trường Tụng Chú)
If there be a person who gives rise to a mind of prayer and entreaty, or who has illness and calamity and wishes to pray for long life, on through to every matter of supplication within the mind, then he shall dispatch the Natal Star (Bản Tinh), which will constantly follow according to the mind.
The Tathāgata, while in the world, established the great Vow to perform the Homa (Hộ Ma) within this Section. By reason of this cause and condition, one therefore employs the Seven Stars (the 7 Stars) to make it efficacious and responsive. These many secret matters may not be transmitted to outsiders. Whether for the sake of the Sovereign King, or for the sake of a Great Minister—it may not be performed for the common people of the hundred surnames, or for sentient beings of slight knowledge and understanding, that this Great Dharma should be done.
