七佛父母姓字經
Chinese title:七佛父母姓字經
Thus have I heard[2]:
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the country of Śrāvastī. In that country there was a woman who had a son named Vô Diên, and on his account she was called Mother of Vô Diên[3]. The Buddha, together with five hundred Bhikṣus[4], came to the house of Lady Vô Diên and sat down to receive the meal in the upper hall. After the meal had been taken[5], about ten Bhikṣus, in a secluded place[6], discussed with one another: The Buddha is the one whom we revere; his divine majesty is boundless, and he transforms freely according to his will. How could he not know the Buddhas of the past and the Buddhas of the future—their lifespans, their names and family lineages, the names of their fathers and mothers, how many disciples they had, their practice and their teachings?
With his divine ear the Buddha heard the Bhikṣus discussing this matter; he came and asked:
"O Bhikṣus, of what matter are you speaking?"
The Bhikṣus replied:
"We were thinking that the Buddha possesses supreme spiritual powers, marvelous virtue, and far-reaching understanding, such that no one can surpass him. The Buddha knows clearly the Buddhas of the past and the Buddhas of the future—their lifespans, their names and family lineages, the names of their fathers and mothers, how many disciples they had, their practice and the resolve of their teaching-commands."
The Buddha said:
"Excellent! Excellent! It is indeed so. You who practice the Dharma of the Śramaṇa should keep in mind such wholesome matters. Do you wish to hear the names and family lineages of the Buddhas of the past, together with their parents and their disciples?"
The Bhikṣus replied:
"We wish to hear."
The Buddha taught:
"O Bhikṣus, listen carefully! The first Buddha was named Duy-vệ[7]; since he entered Nirvāṇa, ninety-one kalpas have now passed. The second Buddha was named Thức[8]; since he entered Nirvāṇa, thirty-one kalpas have likewise now passed. The third Buddha was named Tùy-diệp[9]; since he entered Nirvāṇa, thirty-one kalpas have now passed. In the Phi-địa-la[10] kalpa there will be one thousand Buddhas: the first named Buddha Câu-lâu-tần[11], the second named Buddha Câu-na-hàm Mâu-ni[12], the third named Buddha Ca-diếp[13], and the fourth being I, Buddha Śākyamuni.

"Buddha Ca-diếp's father was named A-chi-đạt-da[33], of the Brahmin line; his mother was named Đàn-na-việt-đề-da[34]; the country's title was Ba-la-tư[35]. The king's title was Kỳ-thậm-đọa[36].
"Now, my own—I, Buddha Śākyamuni—father was named Duyệt-đầu-đàn[37], a king of the Kṣatriya line; my mother was named Mahāmāyā[38]. The country was named Ca-duy-la-vệ[39]; the great king of a former generation was named Bàn-đề[40].
"Buddha Duy-vệ lived eighty thousand years[41]. Buddha Thức lived seventy thousand years[42]. Buddha Tùy-diệp lived sixty thousand years[43]. Buddha Câu-lâu-tần lived forty thousand years[44]. "Buddha Duy-vệ attained the Way and became a Buddha beneath the Ba-đa-la tree[54]. Buddha Thức attained the Way and became a Buddha beneath the Phân-đồ-lợi tree[55]. Buddha Tùy-diệp attained the Way and became a Buddha beneath the Tát-la tree[56].
Buddha Câu-lâu-tần attained the Way and became a Buddha beneath the Tư-lợi tree[57]. Buddha Câu-na-hàm Mâu-ni attained the Way and became a Buddha beneath the Ô-tạm tree[58]. Buddha Ca-diếp attained the Way and became a Buddha beneath the Ni-câu-loại tree[59].
Now I became Buddha Śākyamuni beneath the A-bái-đa tree[60]. The attendant of Buddha Duy-vệ was named A-luân[61]. The attendant of Buddha Thí was named Sai-ma-yết[62].
The attendant of Buddha Tùy-diệp was named Phục-chi-diệp[63]. The attendant of Buddha Câu-lâu-tần was named Phù-đề[64]. The attendant of Buddha Câu-na-hàm Mâu-ni was named Tát-chất[65].

Now my foremost disciple, I, Buddha Śākyamuni, is Śāriputra, and the second is named Mahāmaudgalyāyana[75].
"Buddha Duy-vệ delivered three assemblies of sūtra-teaching for the Bhikṣus. At the first assembly of sūtra-teaching, one hundred thousand Bhikṣus attained the fruit of Arhatship. At the second assembly of sūtra-teaching, ninety thousand Bhikṣus attained the fruit of Arhatship. At the third assembly of sūtra-teaching, eighty thousand Bhikṣus attained the fruit of Arhatship.
"Buddha Thức likewise had three assemblies of sūtra-teaching. At the first assembly of sūtra-teaching, ninety thousand Bhikṣus attained the fruit of Arhatship. "Buddha Ca-diếp taught the Dharma in one assembly, and twenty thousand Bhikṣus attained the fruit of Arhatship.
"I, Buddha Śākyamuni, taught the Dharma in one assembly, and one thousand two hundred and fifty Bhikṣus all attained the fruit of Arhatship."
The Buddha said to the Bhikṣus:
"The wisdom of the Buddha cannot be measured nor fully extolled. You should uphold and retain what concerns the appearance, the parents, the kings, and the teaching and transformation of the seven Buddhas."
The Buddha further taught the Bhikṣus:
"The sūtras and the Vinaya cannot but be studied. The Way of the Dharma cannot but be practiced. The Buddha is like the one who steers a boat upon the great ocean: thousands upon tens of thousands of people all rely upon the steersman to cross the sea. The Buddha teaches everyone to practice the wholesome Dharma, to attain the fruit of the Way, and to liberate the world—it is just like this."
The Bhikṣus, having heard this sūtra, rejoiced, paid homage, and then withdrew.
