Thus, truly, have I heard. At one time the Buddha, together with the bhiksus, assembled in the grove of the elder Anathapindika and Prince Jeta (*) in the country of Sravasti. At that time the Buddha told the bhiksus:
“Listen carefully. If shravakas who cultivate right conduct wish to attain purity of mind, they should cut off five dharmas and cultivate seven dharmas to fulfillment. The five dharmas are: sensual desire, anger, sloth and torpor, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. These five are able to cover and obstruct, and therefore must be cut off.
And the seven dharmas that should be cultivated are:

  • The awakening factor of investigation of dharmas.
  • The awakening factor of mindfulness.
  • The awakening factor of diligence.
  • The awakening factor of joy.
  • The awakening factor of pliancy.
  • The awakening factor of concentration.
  • The awakening factor of equanimity.

These seven dharmas you must cultivate.
Bhiksus, what is called purity of mind is another term for liberation of mind. Because of defilement by craving, the mind is not pure. Because of defilement by ignorance (delusion), wisdom is not pure. If bhiksus are able to sever defilement by craving, this is liberation of mind; if they sever ignorance, this is liberation by wisdom.
Furthermore, bhiksus, freedom from the defilement of craving and attainment of liberation of mind is called realization by the mind; cutting off ignorance and attaining liberation is called the state of one beyond training, forever far removed from craving and attachment, clearly knowing true right wisdom, presently realizing the fruit, and bringing the realm of suffering to an end.
Bhiksus, the matters spoken above are what you should cultivate and learn.”
