Thus have I heard:
At one time the Venerable Ānanda was dwelling at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in the city of Rājagṛha. Not long after the World-Honored One had entered Nirvāṇa, there was at that time a heterodox practitioner of wrong livelihood who was a friend of the Venerable Ānanda. After the midday meal, walking at his ease, he came to where the Venerable Ānanda was. Having arrived, he exchanged greetings and inquiries with the Venerable Ānanda. When the greetings and inquiries were done, he sat down to one side. Having seated himself to one side, that practitioner of wrong livelihood said to the Venerable Ānanda:
"There is something I wish to ask. If you permit me, then I will dare to ask."
"Ask, friend!"
"Ānanda, the Śramaṇa Gautama has cast off wrong views and cut off wrong views. Why is it that he does not declare: 'The world is eternal, the world is not eternal; the world has a limit, the world has no limit; the soul is the body, the body is the soul, or the soul is one thing and the body is another; the Tathāgata exists after death, or the Tathāgata does not exist after death'? Ānanda, does the Śramaṇa Gautama know wrong views, and does he therefore know these matters?"
"Brāhmaṇa, the World-Honored One has wisdom, has knowledge and vision; he is the Tathāgata, the Worthy One free of attachment, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One, who has cast off wrong views and cut off wrong views, and does not take up the question: 'The world is eternal,' and so on, down to the question of whether the Tathāgata exists after death. Brāhmaṇa, the World-Honored One has wisdom, has knowledge and vision, and therefore the Tathāgata, the Worthy One free of attachment, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One, knows clearly in this way."
"Ānanda, the Śramaṇa Gautama has cast off wrong views and cut off wrong views, and does not take up the question: 'The world is eternal,' and so on, down to the question of whether the Tathāgata exists after death. Why is this, Ānanda? The Śramaṇa Gautama knows that this is a wrong view—how is it that he knows this?"
Brāhmaṇa, this is a wrong view; it is associated thus, equally associated thus, tending thus, arising thus, even unto the life to come. Brāhmaṇa, therefore the World-Honored One knows in this way; he has knowledge, has vision—the Tathāgata, the Worthy One free of attachment, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One, knows that this is a wrong view, and so knows it in this way."
"Therefore, Ānanda, I now take refuge in you."
"Brāhmaṇa, do not take refuge in me. Just as I have taken refuge in the World-Honored One, so should you also take refuge in him."
"Therefore, Ānanda, I now take refuge in the World-Honored One, in the Dharma, and in the Saṅgha of monks. I ask to become an Upāsaka of the World-Honored One. From this day onward I shall keep far from the taking of life; this day I take refuge in the World-Honored One."
Thus the Venerable Ānanda spoke. When that practitioner of wrong livelihood had heard what the Venerable Ānanda said, he was joyful and glad.
