We reverently beseech all Buddhas and great bodhisattvas, through the power of great loving-kindness and compassion, the power of great wisdom, the power of the inconceivable, the power of immeasurable mastery, the power to subdue the four maras (1), the power to eliminate the five hindrances (2), the power to extinguish all afflictions, the power of immeasurably pure karmic defilements, the power to unfold immeasurable contemplative wisdom, the power of undefiled wisdom (3), the power to unfold the immeasurable, the power of immeasurable and boundless supernormal abilities, the immeasurable power to liberate sentient beings, the immeasurable power to protect sentient beings, the immeasurable power to bring peace and security to sentient beings,

the immeasurable power to eliminate suffering and distress, the immeasurable power to deliver beings from the hells, the immeasurable power to save hungry ghosts, the immeasurable power to rescue sentient beings, the immeasurable power to gather in and transform asuras, the immeasurable power to embrace those in the human realm, the immeasurable power to end the afflictions of devas and immortals, the power to perfect the adornments of the ten bhumis (4), the power to perfect the adornments of the Pure Land, the power to perfect the adornments of the place of enlightenment, the power to perfect the adornments of the merits of Buddhahood, the power to perfect the adornments of the wisdom of Buddhahood, the power to perfect the adornments of the Dharma body (5),

the power to perfect the adornments of unsurpassed bodhi, the power to perfect the adornments of great nirvana, the power of immeasurable and inexhaustible merit, and the power of immeasurable and inexhaustible wisdom…

We humbly beseech all Buddhas and great bodhisattvas throughout the reaches of empty space in the ten directions, with such immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable powers of mastery, not to forsake their original vows or turn away from their original aspirations, but to bestow them all upon every sentient being of the four modes of birth (6) and six realms (7) throughout the ten directions, as well as upon all who today together give rise to the resolve, so that they may surely possess the power to accomplish all merits, the power to adorn the place of enlightenment, the power to adorn Buddhahood, the power of wisdom to adorn Buddhahood, the power to adorn the Dharma body, the power to adorn unsurpassed bodhi, the power to adorn great nirvana,

the power of immeasurable and inexhaustible merit, and the power of immeasurable and inexhaustible wisdom.

We humbly beseech all Buddhas and great bodhisattvas throughout the reaches of empty space in the ten directions, with such immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable powers of mastery, not to forsake their original vows or abandon their original aspirations, but to bestow them all upon every sentient being of the four modes of birth and six realms throughout the ten directions, as well as upon all who today together give rise to the resolve, so that they may fully possess the power to accomplish bodhi and fully possess the power to accomplish the practice of bodhi.

Today, throughout the ten directions, whether hidden (8) or manifest, whether foe or friend, or neither foe nor friend, all beings of the four modes of birth and six realms, whether connected by affinity or without affinity, together with all sentient beings in future lives, may through this Dharma of repentance always attain purity; wherever they are born, may they all attain their vows, remain single-minded and steadfast, never regress in mind, become equal to the Tathagata, and together attain perfect enlightenment.

Even in future ages, should any sentient being differ from that aspiration, may all be led into the ocean of great vows and immediately attain fulfillment, accomplish merit and wisdom equal to those of the bodhisattvas, fulfill the vows of the ten bhumis, perfect all-aspect wisdom, adorn unsurpassed bodhi, and attain ultimate liberation. We, your disciples, wholeheartedly bow in homage:

Next, homage is paid to the twelve divisions of the revered sutras and the Dharma Wheel of the Great Canon. Homage to the great bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions: I now rely upon the bodhisattvas and pray to repent:

In the realms of the ten directions at present,

Abide forever the Honored Ones, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct.

May they, with hearts of great compassion,

Mercifully remember us.

Sentient beings have no refuge,

Nor anyone to protect and rescue them;

Therefore, for beings such as these,

You are able to become their refuge.

I have now committed offenses,

And exceedingly grave evil karma.

Now before those of the ten directions,

With all my heart, I repent of them all.

In the past, I had no faith in the Buddha,

Nor did I revere the Honored One.

I did not diligently cultivate wholesome deeds,

But constantly created evil karma.

At times, relying upon my own superiority,

My lineage and social standing,

For many years I acted without restraint,

Constantly creating evil karma.

My mind continually gave rise to wrong thoughts,

And my mouth constantly uttered evil words.

Failing to perceive my faults,

I constantly created evil karma.

I constantly engaged in the conduct of the foolish,

My mind darkened by ignorance.

Following evil companions,

I constantly created evil karma.

At times, because of frivolous disputation,

Or while harboring grief and anxiety,

Bound by greed and anger,

I therefore created evil karma.

Although I did not delight in such faults,

Because I was afraid

And lacked freedom and self-mastery,

I therefore created evil karma.

At times, my mind was agitated,

Or I was enraged and resentful;

Even tormented by hunger and thirst,

I therefore created evil karma.

Because of food, drink, and clothing,

And craving for beautiful forms,

The fire of afflictions burned within me,

And so I created evil karma.

Before the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha,

I did not give rise to a reverent mind.

All offenses created in this way,

I now repent of them all.

Toward bodhisattvas and pratyekabuddhas,

My mind likewise showed no reverence.

All offenses created in this way,

I now repent of them all.

Through ignorance and arrogance,

And even through the power of greed and anger,

All offenses created in this way,

I now repent of them all.

Having completed this repentance, with utmost sincerity we pay homage…

Homage to the immeasurable and boundless great bodhisattvas throughout the worlds of the ten directions. Reverence to all the worthy sages, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas.

Having bowed before the Three Jewels, we now bring forth a courageous resolve and pray that all the Holy Ones, through their inconceivable power (9), will together bestow their protection and aid upon us. May every vow made by us, your disciples, be fulfilled. Wherever we are born, may we never forget them, and may we ultimately attain unsurpassed bodhi and become perfectly and completely awakened Buddhas.

From this time onward, throughout life after life and age after age, wherever we may be, we vow always to remain mindful and bring forth the aspiration for bodhi continuously, without interruption. From this time onward, throughout life after life and age after age, wherever we may be, we vow always to bow before and serve immeasurably and innumerably many Buddhas, and always to make offerings to them, complete in every respect.

We vow always to uphold and protect all the Mahayana Vaipulya Sutras (10), making offerings of every necessary implement in full. From this time onward, we vow always to encounter the immeasurable and boundless bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions and to offer them all necessities in full. From this time onward, throughout life after life and age after age, wherever we may be, we vow always to encounter the innumerable and boundless worthy sages throughout the ten directions and to offer them every necessary article in full.

We also vow always to attend upon our fathers and mothers, providing them with everything they need and fulfilling their wishes. We further vow that, from this day onward, we shall always serve our preceptors and ācāryas, offering them the four requisites (11) and fulfilling their wishes. From this time onward, we vow always to encounter rulers of nations who possess great power, and together with them, in unity of purpose, revitalize the Three Jewels and prevent their decline.

From this time onward, throughout life after life and age after age, wherever we may be, we, your disciples, vow always to adorn the buddha lands, where even the names of the “three evil destinies” (12) and the “eight difficulties” (13) do not exist. May the “four unobstructed wisdoms” (14) and the “six supernormal powers” (15) always be manifest before us, so that we may use them to teach and transform all sentient beings.

Together, with utterly sincere hearts, we cast our five limbs to the ground (16) and bow before all the Buddhas of the ten directions.

Furthermore, we, your disciples, respectfully take refuge in the Three Jewels throughout all the realms of empty space in the ten directions. We pray that, through the power of the great compassion of all Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, sages, and the noble Sangha, all the vows we have made may be fulfilled, and wherever we are born, our minds may attain mastery. From this day forward, throughout life after life and kalpa after kalpa, wherever we may be, we further vow that if any sentient being sees the bodily form of a bodhisattva, that being shall immediately attain liberation; if anyone enters the hells, all the conditions of the hells shall become Pure Lands; and all obstructing conditions, suffering, and affliction shall be transformed into states of peace and joy.

May all sentient beings have their six faculties purified (17), their bodies and minds peaceful and joyful as in the state of the third dhyana (18), all nets of doubt severed, and the resolve for undefiled liberation awakened (19). We, your disciples, vow that if any sentient being hears the voice of a bodhisattva, that being’s mind shall immediately become peaceful and secure, all sinful defilements shall be eliminated, the Dharma of dharani shall be attained (20), liberation within right samadhi shall be realized, the power of patience shall be perfected, eloquence shall flow without interruption, and all shall ascend to the stage of Dharma Cloud (21) and attain Perfect, Complete Enlightenment.

From this day forward, throughout life after life and kalpa after kalpa, wherever we may be, we vow that all sentient beings who hear the name of a bodhisattva shall rejoice and attain what they have never attained before; if they enter the “three evil destinies” (22), all their suffering shall cease; and if they are born in the human or heavenly realms, all their outflows shall be exhausted, and wherever they turn for refuge, they shall attain mastery and liberation.

From this day forward, we, your disciples, vow that toward all sentient beings we shall have no thought of giving or taking, and no conception of enemy or friend; that we shall completely sever the roots of the “three poisons” (23), abandon “self” (24) and “what belongs to self” (25), faithfully follow the Dharma taught for those of great capacity, and practice a mind of impartial loving-kindness and compassion. We shall maintain harmony with all, just like the noble assembly.

We further vow that toward all sentient beings our minds shall always remain impartial, like empty space; unmoved by praise or blame, regarding enemy and friend as having a single characteristic; deeply entering the vast mind, learning the Buddha’s wisdom of transformation, and viewing all sentient beings equally, as the Buddha regarded Rahula. May we fulfill and perfect the practices of the “ten abodes” (26), attain the fruit of liberation, transcend all marks of existence and nonexistence, constantly practice the principle of the Middle Way (27), and together perfect the seed of wisdom.

Furthermore, through the causes, conditions, and merit of the repentance and vows that we, your disciples, now undertake, we pray that from this day forward until the attainment of bodhi, beings of the four modes of birth (28) and the six destinies (29) shall practice the bodhisattva path without weariness; that their gifts of wealth and Dharma shall never be exhausted; that they shall employ wisdom and skillful means according to appropriate methods, administering the medicine of Dharma in accordance with each capacity and illness; and that all who see or hear them shall attain liberation.

We, your disciples, further vow that from this day until we attain the Way, as we practice the bodhisattva path, we shall encounter no obstacles or adversities. Wherever we go, may we always perform great works of the Buddha and establish places of enlightenment; may our minds attain mastery, may we attain mastery of the Dharma, and may we constantly enter deeply into the powers of great samadhi. May we open the gateway of complete retention, reveal the fruition of Buddhahood, abide on the stage of Dharma Cloud, and shower down the water of amrita, extinguishing the four kinds of demonic adversaries (30) of sentient beings and enabling them to attain the pure, wondrous fruit of the Dharma-body.

May all the vows we have made today be like the vows made by the great bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions, and may our noble aspirations be like all the great vows made by the Buddhas throughout the ten directions before they began their cultivation—vast as the Dharma-nature and ultimate as empty space. We hope that our wishes shall be fulfilled, that our practices of bodhi shall be perfected, and that all sentient beings shall likewise accord with the Way and attain the fulfillment of their aspirations.

We reverently beseech the Buddhas, the Venerable Dharma, the bodhisattvas, the sages, and the noble Sangha throughout the ten directions to employ the power of their compassion to seal and attest our vows (31). We further pray that all celestial lords, all lords of the immortals, and all heavenly and dragon spirits shall, through the power of their wholesome roots, protect the Three Jewels, manifest themselves as witnesses, and enable all our practices and vows to be fulfilled freely according to our hearts.

Notes:

1. Subduing the four maras: Subduing the four kinds of demonic obstruction: 1/ The mara of afflictions: the demons of greed, anger, delusion, and so forth, which afflict body and mind; 2/ The mara of the five skandhas: form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, which act as maras afflicting body and mind; 3/ The mara of death: the demon of death, which takes away life; 4/ The celestial mara: the Mara dwelling in the Heaven of Freely Enjoying Others’ Emanations, who destroys wholesome Dharma and afflicts virtuous practitioners.

2. Five hindrances: Explained in Volume One, note 57, page 111 (Book I).

3. Undefiled wisdom: Wisdom without outflows. It is wisdom that has departed from all afflictive defilements, wholesome and pure, without the slightest stain. This is the wisdom of those who have attained the noble fruits: arhats and pratyekabuddhas.

4. Ten bhumis: Explained in Volume One, note 96, page 121 (Book I).

5. Dharma-body: Dharmakàya (S). Corps d’ essence (F). The true body, the embodiment of the Way, the essence of the Dharma-nature. The Buddha’s Dharma-body possesses four virtues: permanence, bliss, self, and purity. It is not subject to the four sufferings of birth, aging, illness, and death. It is neither large nor small, neither white nor black; it neither possesses the Way nor lacks the Way. It naturally endures forever without change; whether or not a Buddha appears in the world, it always remains thus.

6. & 7. Four modes of birth and Six destinies: These two numerical Dharma terms were explained in Volume One, notes 37 and 38, page 106 (Book I).

8. Beings in the unseen and visible realms: Explained in Volume Two, note 10, page 185 (Book I).

9. Inconceivable: Beyond the full reach of thought and discussion; it cannot be exhausted either by intellectual examination or verbal explanation. Also called unthinkable and ineffable.

10. Vaipulya Mahayana Sutras: Explained in Volume Four, note 7, page 354 (Book I).

11. Offering the four requisites: Quatre catégories de dons (F). The four kinds of offerings. Benefactors provide for and support monks by offering: 1/ Clothing; 2/ Food and drink; 3/ Rooms, dwellings, beds, and bedding; 4/ Medicines and medical necessities.

12. Three evil destinies: The three evil paths: the hells, hungry ghosts, and animals. Explained in detail above.

13. Eight difficulties: Explained in Volume Nineteen, note 26, page 608 (Book I).

14. Four unobstructed wisdoms: Explained in Volume Three, note 25, page 257 (Book I).

15. Six spiritual powers: Explained in Volume Three, note 24, page 256 (Book I), and Volume Fourteen, note 18, page 265 (Book II).

16. Casting the five limbs to the ground: Explained in Volume Nineteen, note 27, page 609 (Book II).

17. Purification of the six faculties: Purification of the eye faculty; purification of the ear faculty; purification of the nose faculty; purification of the tongue faculty; purification of the body faculty; and purification of the mind faculty.

18. State of the third dhyana: Explained in Volume Eleven, note 17, page 76 (Book II).

19. Undefiled liberation: Liberation that is not subject to afflictions. It is the fruit of arhatship in the Sravaka Vehicle and the liberation belonging to the fruit of pratyekabuddhahood. Those of lofty spiritual attainment are completely liberated from afflictions.

20. Dharma of dharani: Explained in Volume Two, note 2, page 183 (Book I).

21. Dharma Cloud Bhumi: The stage of the cloud of Dharma. It is the highest stage, the tenth of the ten bhumis. A bodhisattva on this stage possesses wisdom like an auspicious cloud, showering the rain of amrita everywhere. Abiding on the Dharma Cloud Bhumi, the bodhisattva is complete in wisdom and virtue, surpassing sravakas and pratyekabuddhas, and is able independently to pour down rain that causes the wholesome roots of sentient beings to grow. Nevertheless, above the Dharma Cloud Bhumi remains the stage of Equal Enlightenment. Above Equal Enlightenment is Wondrous Enlightenment.

22. Three evil destinies: Explained in Volume Twelve, note 2, page 131 (Book II).

23. Three poisons: Greed, anger, and delusion.

24. & 25. Self and That Which Belongs to the Self: “Self” refers to each person’s own being; “that which belongs to the self” refers to the things one possesses, such as houses, fields, utensils, and so forth. Whoever wishes to attain liberation must relinquish both self and that which belongs to the self.

26. Ten Abodes: The ten stages of abiding. A bodhisattva who realizes the tenth stage of abiding attains the highest position, that of a Bodhisattva of the Ten Abodes. The ten stages of abiding are: 1/ Abode of Arousing the Resolve; 2/ Abode of Maintaining the Ground; 3/ Abode of Cultivation and Practice; 4/ Abode of Noble Birth; 5/ Abode of Perfect Endowment with Skillful Means; 6/ Abode of the Right Mind; 7/ Abode of Non-Retrogression; 8/ Abode of the True Youth; 9/ Abode of the Dharma Prince; and 10/ Abode of Consecration.

27. Middle Way: The principle of the middle course: Juste milieu, la Voie moyenne (Fr.). The way of harmony. “Middle” means harmonious unity, without dualistic division; abiding precisely at the center, inclining neither to one side nor the other, neither excessive nor deficient.

28. & 29. Four Modes of Birth and Six Realms: Explained in the first volume, entries 37 & 38, page 106 (Volume I).

30. Eradicating the four kinds of hostile maras: 1/ Mara of afflictions; 2/ Mara of the five skandhas; 3/ Mara of death; and 4/ Celestial Mara. Explained under entry 1 of this volume. Please refer to the preceding passage.

31. Seal of verification: Mudrā (S). Geste magique, sceau (Fr.). “Seal” means to seal and approve. “Verification” means to confirm something with certainty. A seal of verification is the definitive confirmation that principle and phenomena are perfectly integrated in each matter; this is called a seal of verification.
