Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha, together with the great Bodhisattvas, was dwelling in the World of Peace and Bliss.

Their names were: Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, Samantaprabha Bodhisattva, Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, Sarvabhayaharaṇa (Remover of All Fear) Bodhisattva, Holder of All Pure Auspiciousness Bodhisattva, Holder of All Marks of Merit Bodhisattva, Holder of the Sun, Moon, and Three Times Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, and other such great Bodhisattvas as foremost leaders.

At that time, the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara went before the World-Honored One, then bowed his head in reverence, touching his forehead to the Buddha's feet, and withdrew to sit to one side.

Then the goddess Mahāśrī also came before the Buddha, then bowed her head in reverence, touching her forehead to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him immeasurable hundreds of thousands of times, also paid reverence to all the Bodhisattvas of the World of Peace and Bliss, and withdrew to sit to one side.

When the World-Honored One beheld the goddess Mahāśrī, possessed of immeasurable hundreds of thousands of adornments of merit, surrounded by a koṭi of Tathāgatas, and extolled in praise by all the Śakras, the Brahmā Kings, and the Four World-Guardian Kings, he then, with a great Brahma voice, addressed the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, saying:

"O Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva! If there be any king, prince, bhikṣu, bhikṣuṇī, layman of pure faith, laywoman of pure faith, brahmacārin, ruler, merchant, or farmer who upholds and extols the 12 correspondences with the 108 stainless names of the goddess Mahāśrī, then all the people within that land shall have all their fears and the oppressive afflictions of suffering dispelled. All enemies and bandits, together with the fears arising from humans and non-humans, shall likewise be unable to do harm. They shall obtain abundant wealth and treasures, and grains ripening in profusion. The goddess Mahāśrī shall ever dwell within the land of that ruler."

Then those great Bodhisattvas all spoke these words:

"Excellent, excellent! These words of the World-Honored One are most sublime. If anyone upholds the name of the goddess Mahāśrī, then they shall obtain such blessings and benefit."

Then the fearless great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara at once addressed the Buddha, saying:

"World-Honored One! Where has the goddess Mahāśrī planted her roots of goodness?"

The Buddha said:

"The goddess Mahāśrī has planted her roots of goodness in the presence of Tathāgatas, Worthy Ones, Perfectly Enlightened Ones as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River.

O Fearless Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva! In the past, there was a world named Jewel-Born. In that land, a Buddha appeared in the world, named Bejeweled-Flower-Merit-Ocean—Lapis-Lazuli-Golden-Mountain—Golden-Radiant-Auspiciousness Tathāgata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One. The goddess Mahāśrī planted her roots of goodness in the presence of that Buddha, and likewise in the presence of the other Tathāgatas.

Because she invoked and recited the names of such Tathāgatas, the roots of goodness of the goddess Mahāśrī were accomplished, and she was ever protected and kept in mind by those Tathāgatas. Thereby, the goddess Mahāśrī is able to liberate beings from all the obstructions of transgression; to extinguish all afflictions; to cause all bodies to become stainless; to summon and increase all wealth, treasures, and grains; to dispel poverty; to gather and summon all devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas; to bring to an end all oppressive suffering and all disputes and combat; and to accomplish the Six Pāramitās.

If anyone reverently upholds, reads, and recites the names of those Tathāgatas, then that good man or good woman shall give rise to a great accumulation of blessings.

All those Tathāgatas bestowed upon the goddess Mahāśrī the prophecy, saying:

"In a future age, you shall, in the World of Auspicious Jewel Adornment, attain Perfect, Complete Enlightenment, named Auspicious Maṇi-Jewel-Born Tathāgata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One. In that world there shall be myriad kinds of celestial jewels used for its adornment. Only that Tathāgata shall emit light in that world. The Bodhisattvas within the world of that Buddha-land shall naturally possess radiance and shall attain immeasurable lifespans. In the empty space above that land, the sound of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha shall resound. All the Bodhisattvas born within the world of that Buddha-land shall be born by transformation upon daises of lotus flowers.

O Fearless Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva! This Mahāśrī mantra, together with those 108 names, is able to extinguish all afflictions; is able to crush and destroy all the obstructions of transgression; is able to summon all blessings and benefit; is able to remove all unfortunate matters; and is able to summon all merit.

If anyone upholds, reads, and recites, and likewise invokes the names of those Tathāgatas, then they should rise in the early morning to burn incense and offer flowers in offering to all the Buddhas. They should also burn sandalwood incense as an offering to the goddess Mahāśrī, and thereafter read this Sūtra. If they are able to do thus, that person shall before long obtain all auspiciousness, all peace, bliss, and joy, the support of all the devas, and the accomplishment of all their endeavors."

When the Buddha had finished expounding this Sūtra, the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, together with the goddess Mahāśrī and all the great assembly, having heard the words taught by the Buddha, all gave rise to minds of great rejoicing, and they faithfully received and reverently practiced it.
