23. CHAPTER: VERSES OF PRAISE BY THE SONS OF THE PURE ABODES
At that time, the Sons of the Pure Abodes knew that immeasurable beings had become securely established in bodhi and harbored no doubts regarding the Buddha-Dharma. Delighted and joyful, they each spoke sublime verses praising the Buddha’s virtues.
The Son of Heaven Faithful Giving spoke verses of praise:
"He relinquished his beloved wife and children,
And relinquished even his precious body,
As well as his throne and wealth.
I bow to the One Perfected in Giving."
The Son of Heaven Delighting in Upholding the Precepts spoke verses of praise:
"The Tathagata formerly upheld the precepts,
Without attachment to anything.
He attained the fruit of reaching the other shore.
I bow to the One Perfected in Morality."
The Son of Heaven Delighting in Forbearance spoke verses of praise:
"In the past, the Buddha cultivated forbearance,
Enduring the severing of his hands and feet;
His mind never felt regret or anguish.
I bow to the One Perfected in Forbearance."
The Son of Heaven Delighting in Diligence spoke verses of praise:
"The valiant, non-retrogressing One,
Whose diligence possesses great power,
Has attained supreme bodhi.
I bow to the One Perfected in Diligence."
The Son of Heaven Delighting in Meditation spoke verses of praise:
"The Buddha formerly cultivated meditative concentration,
Unbeknownst to the world;
He attained equality throughout the three times.
I bow to the One Perfected in Meditation."
The Son of Heaven Majestic Virtue spoke verses of praise:
"The Great Hero continuously cultivated
Prajna,
And realized inexhaustible wisdom.
I bow to the One Perfected in Wisdom."
The Son of Heaven Morality and Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"Giving and loving speech,
Beneficial conduct and cooperation—
Through these four means of embracing, he liberates beings.
I bow to the great Guiding Teacher."
The Son of Heaven Pure Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"In great loving-kindness, compassion, and sympathetic joy,
Throughout the long night he constantly practiced;
By these he rescues all beings.
I take refuge in the Great Master Mariner."
The Son of Heaven Pure Mind spoke verses of praise:
"Having attained the practice free from contention,
The great Muni has tamed his mind;
He tames those not yet tamed.
I bow to the Tamer and Teacher."
The Son of Heaven Stainless Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"His mind is vast, his mind gentle and yielding;
His mind and all his faculties are disciplined.
He knows the minds of all beings.
I bow to the One who knows clearly."
The Son of Heaven Pure Intent spoke verses of praise:
"The One endowed with right mindfulness,
Securely established in steadfast wisdom,
Clearly and lucidly knows all.
I bow to the Awakened One who awakens others."
The Son of Heaven Adorned Mind spoke verses of praise:
"For long ages the Buddha’s mind has been pure;
He has also purified his Buddha-land
And purified the wisdom of all beings.
I bow to the Pure Dharma King."
The Son of Heaven Unsurpassed spoke verses of praise:
"His aspirations could not be destroyed;
With his power he subdued the hostile maras
And completely fulfilled all his great vows,
Bringing joy and delight to the assemblies of devas."
The Son of Heaven Swiftly Accomplishing Deeds spoke verses of praise:
"The Tathagata swiftly realized the Dharma
And swiftly purified beings as well.
He has seen the Dharma that is difficult to see.
I bow to the Worthy One."
The Son of Heaven Steadfast Diligence spoke verses of praise:
"Everywhere he is liberated,
Free from delusion and affliction;
He has already reached the other shore.
I bow to the One of Steadfast Power."
The Son of Heaven Delighting in Dignified Conduct spoke verses of praise:
"Free from desire and every fault,
He dispelled darkness and exhausted the taints,
The supreme field of merit for the world."
The Son of Heaven Well-Abiding spoke verses of praise:
"The Blessed One abides in the true Dharma
And receives offerings from the three realms.
He travels the one secure path;
Therefore, I reverently bow."
The Son of Heaven Unmoving spoke verses of praise:
Not moved by the wind:
The Son of Heaven Unmoving spoke verses of praise:
"The Buddha is like a mountain, his mind steadfast,
Not moved by the wind.
Amid blame and praise, he remains ever impartial;
Therefore, I reverently bow."
The Son of Heaven Attaining Equality spoke verses of praise:
"The Great Hero’s form is supremely excellent,
Endowed with the thirty-two marks;
He possesses profound, great wisdom.
I bow to the One of Upright and Noble Wisdom."
The Son of Heaven Profound Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"The One whose great body is no body
Securely abides in the Dharma of true suchness
And clearly expounds the ultimate reality;
None in the world is his equal."
The Son of Heaven Unhindered, Unequaled Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"Ultimately equal and nondual,
The valiant One skillfully subdues the maras.
He has no doubts regarding the profound meaning,
And illuminates the Dharma to the other shore."
The Son of Heaven Joyful Intent spoke verses of praise:
"Joyful Intent was formerly valiant;
In all he studied, he became thoroughly proficient.
He cast off and departed from the three realms,
As a snake sheds its old skin."
The Son of Heaven Resolute Intent spoke verses of praise:
"Like a lamp within a darkened house,
When its oil is exhausted, its light goes out;
So does the wise person extinguish all things,
Through hearing the Buddha-Dharma."
The Son of Heaven Abiding in Samatha spoke verses of praise:
"The Tathagata universally observed
Those bound by sensual desire.
The Buddha severed the net of desire
By holding the mirror of wisdom."
The Son of Heaven Abundant Samatha spoke verses of praise:
"Concentrated in mind and concentrated in conduct,
Concentrated in deportment and its sphere,
The Buddha extinguished the afflictions.
I bow to the One who subdued his foes."
The Son of Heaven Fearless Samatha spoke verses of praise:
"By training in the Buddha’s samatha,
The bodhisattva gained renown.
Guided by right concentration,
He perfected the Buddha’s concentrated mind."
The Son of Heaven Sustained by Concentration spoke verses of praise:
"The quiescence of all dharmas
Was proclaimed by the Great Hero.
The One of Great Wisdom understood this
And swiftly became a Tathagata, a Buddha."
The Son of Heaven Constant Contemplation spoke verses of praise:
"Constantly contemplating all beings,
He taught them all to follow the Tathagata,
Realize supreme bodhi,
And become endowed with great wisdom."
The Son of Heaven Upholding Virtue spoke verses of praise:
"The Buddha’s wisdom-paramita
Was cultivated and studied while he was a bodhisattva.
He became one of great majestic virtue
And perceived immeasurable dharmas."
The Son of Heaven Creating Light spoke verses of praise:
"Those who obtain inconceivable light
Will attain stainless bliss.
Where the Tathagata illuminates the world,
They hear of wisdom’s domain."
The Son of Heaven Stainless Light spoke verses of praise:
"All dharmas are free from discrimination;
Through skillful means,
He cultivated wisdom in this way
And thus became the Sublime Man."
The Son of Heaven Abiding Nowhere spoke verses of praise:
"Without abiding, there is no defiling contact;
In all dharmas, nothing is seen.
He sees neither self nor other;
The Buddha’s vision accords with truth."
The Son of Heaven Discerning Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"All dharmas are beyond selection and discrimination;
Thus did the Guiding Teacher see them.
For the sake of beings, he expounded them,
Provisionally adopting the marks of dharmas."
The Son of Heaven Wisdom Without Reliance spoke verses of praise:
"All dharmas have nothing upon which they rely
And are far removed from this and that.
The Tathagata reveals the truth
As plainly as an amra fruit in the palm of his hand."
The Son of Heaven Practicing Like Space spoke verses of praise:
"He knows dharmas to be like empty space,
Neither arising nor ceasing.
The Buddha sees dharmas in this way,
And therefore is free from the world."
The Son of Heaven Without Accumulation spoke verses of praise:
"Neither seeking nor conceited,
Neither cognizing nor not cognizing,
Relying on the true nature that is without accumulation—
Thus does the Buddha see the world."
The Son of Heaven Cultivating Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"Like a skilled illusionist
Conjuring all manner of things,
What is unreal is seen as real;
Therefore, none equals the Buddha."
The Son of Heaven Joyful Awakening spoke verses of praise:
"Like an image within a mirror,
Though seen, it is not real.
The Buddha sees dharmas in this way
And is not attached to the world."
The Son of Heaven Dispelling Doubt spoke verses of praise:
"The Buddha is like an echo that follows a sound;
All dharmas are likewise.
Speaker and hearer are both unreal;
Thus does the Buddha see the world."
The Son of Heaven Unhindered Eloquence spoke verses of praise:
"The One who securely abides in the true Dharma
Eloquently expounds its profound subtlety.
Long ago the Buddha realized the Dharma,
And therefore is endowed with eloquence."
The Son of Heaven Unobstructed Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"In accordance with truth, there is no intrinsic nature;
All dharmas are thus.
The Tathagata knows them in this way,
And therefore dispels the darkness."
The Son of Heaven Free from Sorrow spoke verses of praise:
"Without sorrow and without distress,
Without contention and without defilement,
All dharmas are unstained;
The Buddha sees their true nature."
The Son of Heaven Perfect in Conduct spoke verses of praise:
"There is neither coming nor going;
All dharmas have no existence.
The Tathagata sees them truly
And teaches the world accordingly."
The Son of Heaven Supreme Wisdom spoke verses of praise:
"Neither defiled nor pure,
Neither ignorant nor wise,
All dharmas are without subject or object;
The Buddha fully knows them as they truly are."
The Son of Heaven Attaining Unobstructedness spoke verses of praise:
"Neither bright nor dark,
Neither form nor non-form,
Neither attained nor liberated—
The Buddha’s wisdom sees them as they truly are."
The Son of Heaven Valiant Eyes spoke verses of praise:
"Neither limited nor all-pervading,
Neither nonexistent nor existent,
Like experiencing the five desires in a dream—
The Buddha sees dharmas as they truly are."
The Son of Heaven Unblinking spoke verses of praise:
"Neither arising nor ceasing,
Nor abiding in between;
To be deluded about this is to lack wisdom
Only the Buddha sees true reality"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Emptiness spoke a verse of praise:
"Neither a person nor a sentient being,
Neither function nor anything of the world;
According to convention, there is function—
The Buddha can see true reality"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Signlessness spoke a verse of praise:
"All phenomena that are employed
Are entirely without characteristics;
The nature and characteristics of phenomena are transcended—
The Dharma Guide sees them thus"
The Heavenly Son Wishlessness spoke a verse of praise:
"Because phenomena are empty and signless,
Therefore no aspiration arises;
Even if aspirations and wishes are provisionally established,
Only the Buddha knows them as they truly are"
The Heavenly Son Flow of Samadhi spoke a verse of praise:
"Though the gateway of liberation has been attained,
There is no one who is liberated;
The root of the afflictions is also nonexistent—
The Buddha sees the nature of true reality"
The Heavenly Son Free from Reproach spoke a verse of praise:
"Having abandoned every evil
And gathered stores of merit,
The Buddha therefore cannot be reproached,
Nor is there any act of reproach"
The Heavenly Son Lightning Cloud spoke a verse of praise:
"Like clouds, thunder, and lightning
Pouring rain throughout the earth,
The Buddha showers down the rain of the true Dharma,
Bringing abundance to all beings"
The Heavenly Son Unfailing Vow spoke a verse of praise:
"The Buddha’s words are unsurpassed
And can turn the wheel of the true Dharma;
They clearly penetrate the profound principle of Dharma
And are replete with omniscience"
The Heavenly Son Endowed with Wisdom spoke a verse of praise:
"Neither arising nor ceasing,
All phenomena are empty of intrinsic nature;
Because the Tathagata knows this well,
He teaches it to all people"
The Heavenly Son Lion’s Roar spoke a verse of praise:
"When the Tathagata gives the lion’s roar
And expounds the Dharma of emptiness,
All non-Buddhist teachers are terrified,
As beasts fear the lion"
The Heavenly Son Karma of Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"Through ever-present heedfulness,
The Buddha cultivated and attained bodhi;
The Dharma Guide, within the true Dharma,
Through heedfulness reached the further shore"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"Securely abiding in heedfulness,
He increases the Buddha’s true Dharma;
The ten powers and meritorious practices alike—
The Buddha-Dharma is inconceivable"
The Heavenly Son Born of Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:"
"Gathering in heedfulness,
Through the aids to the Path one gains birth among the devas;
By these the Buddha saves all beings
And also liberates himself"
The Heavenly Son Accomplishment through Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"Through heedfulness, accomplishment is attained;
All realms rely upon liberation;
Shravakas and bodhisattvas
All train by means of this"
The Heavenly Son Practice of Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"All the children of the Buddha
Constantly practice heedfulness;
They can attain omniscience
Because they skillfully contemplate the world"
The Heavenly Son Guardian of Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"When the Buddha cultivated bodhi,
He guarded heedfulness;
He attained supreme bodhi
Because he was adorned with great compassion"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"Those who abide in heedfulness
Discern the single characteristic of phenomena;
The greatly valiant children of the Buddha
Will accomplish their Father’s work"
The Heavenly Son Delighting in Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"The valiant delight in heedfulness
And can shatter the mountain of afflictions;
Thereby they share in the Buddha’s wisdom
And swiftly destroy the mass of pride"
The Heavenly Son Steadfast in Heedfulness spoke a verse of praise:
"Guarding heedfulness,
Long ago he sought omniscience;
Throughout asamkhyeyas of kotis of kalpas,
The Buddha’s mind never grew weary"
The Heavenly Son Shamatha Made Manifest spoke a verse of praise:
"The Dharma-nature is intrinsically quiescent and extinguished;
It is the domain of all Buddhas;
The wise who abide in reliance upon it
Can proceed directly to bodhi"
The Heavenly Son Relying upon Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"All Buddhas rely upon shamatha,
Yet in relying they do not cling;
The afflictions of sentient beings are extinguished,
As rain washes away dust and grime"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"All Buddhas abide in shamatha,
Unmoving like Mount Tai;
The celestial Mara cannot harm them—
Because their minds are quiescent, I bow down"
The Heavenly Son Tamed through Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"In the place of taming through shamatha,
The children of the Buddha utter no disparagement;
Kotis of Maras cannot move them,
For they are free from desire like arhats"
The Heavenly Son Cultivating Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"When the Great Hero cultivated in the past
The great concentration of shamatha,
No one could know the Buddha’s mind
Or on what it relied to enter meditative concentration"
The Heavenly Son Foremost in Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"When the Buddha turned the wheel of the true Dharma,
He immediately attained shamatha;
All other teachings rely upon it,
And by it bodhi is attained"
The Heavenly Son Flow of Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"The Buddha taught shamatha;
It is the cage and net of the mind;
Sentient beings are far removed from the prison of delusion
When the Buddha teaches them to subdue their minds"
The Heavenly Son Domain of Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"The wondrous domain of all Buddhas
Is shamatha;
By cultivating it, one attains unobstructedness
And becomes a great Dharma Guide"
The Heavenly Son Fulfillment of Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"Having filled the mind through meditation,
He then further cultivated wisdom;
Thus the Buddha attained bodhi
And was also able to bring peace to sentient beings"
The Heavenly Son Esteeming Shamatha spoke a verse of praise:
"No other path can be seen,
Only that within the Buddha-Dharma;
There one realizes great wisdom
And becomes the Unsurpassed One"
The Heavenly Son Delighting in Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Relying upon vipashyana,
The Buddha can see all phenomena;
Bodhisattvas who accordingly train in it fully
Accomplish spontaneous wisdom"
The Heavenly Son Born of Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Because he reached the further shore of wisdom,
He became the great King of Physicians;
His revelation of the Four Noble Truths
Was entirely due to vipashyana"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Abiding in vipashyana,
He knows all phenomena as they truly are;
The Valiant One realized bodhi
And became the great Dharma Guide"
The Heavenly Son Cultivating Vipashyana to Completion spoke a verse of praise:
"The Great Being employed wisdom
To cultivate supreme bodhi;
Without producing the domain of consciousness,
He became the great Dharma Guide"
The Heavenly Son Delighting in Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"The wise rely upon true reality
And contemplate phenomena in this way;
They can attain the unequaled fruit
And become Buddhas called Dharma Guides"
The Heavenly Son Diligently Cultivating Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Through diligently cultivating wisdom,
He was able to undertake austerities;
He thereby became difficult to subdue
And could not be harmed by false paths"
The Heavenly Son Vipashyama spoke a verse of praise:
"All the children of the Buddha,
By contemplating the characteristics of phenomena,
Having understood those characteristics,
Become accomplished Guides Who Tame"
The Heavenly Son Cultivating Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Throughout the long night, the Tathagata
Cultivated supreme wisdom;
He was able to accomplish omniscience
And liberate immeasurable multitudes"
The Heavenly Son Practice of Excellence spoke a verse of praise:
"The Buddha cultivated omniscience
And became the great Dharma Guide;
Using the Dharma to save the world,
He crossed beyond the raging torrent"
The Heavenly Son Abiding in Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Abiding in vipashyana,
He contemplated all phenomena;
All Buddha-Dharmas arose from it,
As the earth gives rise to the nyagrodha tree"
The Heavenly Son Upholding Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Blessed One, the children of the Buddha
Embrace and uphold supreme wisdom;
Having attained highest bodhi,
They can liberate all sentient beings"
The Heavenly Son Sporting in Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Sporting freely, he expounds all phenomena
And attains the Buddha’s fearlessness;
Neither timid nor afraid,
He is the great sage of supreme wisdom"
The Heavenly Son Conforming to Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"The Great Hero, with regard to all phenomena,
Fully comprehends them through vipashyana;
He contemplates their lack of intrinsic nature—
This is the Buddha’s bodhi"
The Heavenly Son Firm in Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"The wisdom of all Buddhas is firm;
They teach the Dharma without fear;
Seeing the suffering of all beings,
They can arouse the mind of great compassion"
The Heavenly Son Vipashyana spoke a verse of praise:
"Through wisdom one reaches bodhi;
Those possessing wisdom can train well;
The Buddha attained supreme bodhi
And liberated all sentient beings"
The Heavenly Son Cultivating Emptiness spoke a verse of praise:
"Cultivating and teaching the Dharma of emptiness,
The wise awaken to bodhi;
They demolish every prison of suffering
And also liberate those who are bound"
The Heavenly Son Understanding Emptiness spoke a verse of praise:
"Because the Blessed One understood emptiness,
He perceived neither body nor life;
Without conditions and without intrinsic nature,
Relying upon this, he taught the world"
The Heavenly Son Domain of Emptiness spoke a verse of praise:
"The domain of all Buddhas
Is that the nature of all phenomena is intrinsically empty;
The Great Hero trained within it
Out of loving concern to save sentient beings"
The Heavenly Son Faith in Emptiness spoke a verse of praise:
"The Tathagata is free from defilement
And has long been delivered from fear;
He does not cling to any phenomenon,
Like the wind that rests nowhere"
The Heavenly Son Delighting in Emptiness spoke a verse of praise:
"Those who cultivate the Dharma of emptiness
Those who delight in the Buddha’s realm
Thereby make offerings to the Buddha
And also accomplish the unsurpassed offering."
Deva Son Non-Establishment spoke this verse in praise:
"Through cultivating the Dharma of emptiness,
The Guiding Teacher is able to establish beings;
Comprehending the Dharma without departing from emptiness,
He has attained the Knower of the World."
Deva Son Inclining toward Emptiness spoke this verse in praise:
"The Buddha knows that not a single dharma
Is other than nirvana;
All dharmas arrive at nirvana—
This is the Buddha’s bodhi."
Deva Son Accomplishment of Emptiness spoke this verse in praise:
"Having attained the samadhi of empty quiescence,
The Buddha’s children attain accomplishment;
Those who make offerings to the Buddha
Are practitioners of the Dharma of emptiness."
Deva Son Proceeding toward Emptiness spoke this verse in praise:
"All who take refuge in emptiness
Possess wisdom and are not deluded;
Undefiled, they sever afflictions,
And, free from impurity, attain bodhi."
Deva Son Fulfillment of Emptiness spoke this verse in praise:
"They fulfill the Buddha-Dharma
And accomplish what is difficult to subdue;
All those who cultivate emptiness
Are able to benefit the world."
Deva Son Abiding in Emptiness spoke this verse in praise:
"Abiding securely in the Buddha-Dharma,
Those who cultivate the wisdom of emptiness
Cannot be shaken
By the countless hosts of maras."
Deva Son Delighting in the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"Delighting in the signless,
He is not attached to conditioned signs;
Having discerned all dharmas,
The Buddha transcends the world."
Deva Son Practice of the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"When practicing the signless,
They cultivate pure, quiescent conduct;
Free from the signs of beings and all else,
The maras cannot know their whereabouts."
Deva Son Realm of the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"The signless is the Buddha’s realm,
Within which the Tathagata cultivates;
The signless is difficult to realize and understand—
I bow to the One Who Practices Samadhi."
Deva Son Yearning for the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"All those in this great assembly
Yearn for the three signless dharmas;
Aspiring to the Buddha’s bodhi,
They make offerings to the Teacher of Devas and Humans."
Deva Son Cultivating Signless Practice spoke this verse in praise:
"The Tathagata, within the signless,
Constantly practices day and night;
Devas, humans, ghosts, and spirits
Do not know whence the Buddhas come."
Deva Son Signless Liberation spoke this verse in praise:
"The Great Hero abides in the signless,
Gathering the provisions of all dharmas;
It is what the Guiding Teacher cultivates and studies—
Therefore, I reverently bow."
Deva Son Signless Play spoke this verse in praise:
"With great compassion, he manifests spiritual play,
Relying supremely upon the Dharma of the signless;
To bring beings to maturity,
He abides securely in the Buddha’s wisdom."
Deva Son Accomplishment of the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"Those skilled in cultivating freedom from signs
Can attain the Buddha’s bodhi;
They can also make offerings to the Buddha,
As a child reveres and loves his father."
Deva Son Long Delighting in the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"Those who cherish the Buddha’s true Dharma
Are themselves stupas for beings;
All those who are free from signs
May dwell in the Teacher’s presence."
Deva Son Path of the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"The refuge of all beings,
Through reliance on the Path, he delivers them;
Unattached, practicing quiescent extinction,
The Tathagata is supremely unsurpassed."
Deva Son Faith in the Signless spoke this verse in praise:
"Those who faithfully understand the signless
Are quiescent and free from every foe;
I bow to all Buddhas,
Who deliver themselves and deliver others."
Deva Son Proceeding toward the Wishless spoke this verse in praise:
"Whatever vows the Blessed One may have
Cannot be found when sought;
Those who are free from all doing
Are Buddhas appearing in the world."
Deva Son Cultivating the Wishless spoke this verse in praise:
"Amid existence, he gives rise to no wish,
Cultivating a mind of quiescent extinction;
Severing the bonds of craving,
He is the Buddha who has transcended the world."
Deva Son Born of the Wishless spoke this verse in praise:
"Those who have attained great diligence
Are free from craving amid existence;
Those children of the Tathagata
All bow to their father."
Deva Son Born from the Wishless spoke this verse in praise:
"They give rise to no wish;
Amid existence, they destroy existence;
Having severed the bonds of attachment,
The Buddha’s children are free from reproach."
