– No, Subhuti!
Then the Venerable Subhuti said to the Buddha: Blessed One! If none of these dharmas can practice prajnaparamita, how can a great bodhisattva practice prajnaparamita?
The Buddha said to Subhuti: What do you think? Do you see any dharma that can practice prajnaparamita?
Subhuti replied: Blessed One! No!
The Buddha said to Subhuti: What do you think? Do you see prajnaparamita as that which is practiced by a great bodhisattva?
Subhuti replied: Blessed One! No!
The Buddha said to Subhuti: What do you think? Can a dharma that you do not see be apprehended?
Subhuti replied: Blessed One! No!
The Buddha said to Subhuti: What do you think? Does a dharma that cannot be apprehended undergo arising and cessation?
Subhuti replied: Blessed One! No!
The Buddha said to Subhuti: The true nature of all dharmas, just as you have seen it, is precisely a great bodhisattva's patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas. If a great bodhisattva accomplishes such patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas, the Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Awakened One, will immediately bestow upon that bodhisattva the prediction of irreversibility from supreme awakening.
Subhuti! It is impossible that a great bodhisattva who diligently cultivates the supreme merits of the Buddha’s ten powers, four fearlessnesses, four unhindered understandings, great loving-kindness, great compassion, great sympathetic joy, great equanimity, the eighteen distinctive qualities of a Buddha, and so forth, who is constantly energetic and never indolent or weary, should fail to realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, the knowledge of all-knowing wisdom, and the wondrous wisdom of the Great Vehicle. Why? Subhuti! Because that great bodhisattva has certainly attained the patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas and, until attaining unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, will neither regress nor diminish in the dharmas already attained.
The Venerable Subhuti again addressed the Buddha: “Blessed One! Is it through the non-arising nature of all dharmas that great bodhisattvas receive from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?”
The Buddha said: “No, Subhuti!”
– “Blessed One! Is it through the arising nature of all dharmas that great bodhisattvas receive from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?”
– “No, Subhuti!”
– “Blessed One! Is it through both the arising and non-arising nature of all dharmas that great bodhisattvas receive from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?”
– “No, Subhuti!”
– “Blessed One! Is it through the nature of neither arising nor non-arising of all dharmas that great bodhisattvas receive from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?”
– “No, Subhuti!”
Then the Venerable Subhuti addressed the Buddha: “Blessed One! How do great bodhisattvas receive from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?”
The Buddha said: “Subhuti! What do you think? Do you perceive any dharma that receives from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?”
Subhuti replied: “Blessed One! No! I do not perceive any dharma that receives from the Buddha the prediction of non-retrogression from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Nor do I perceive any dharma in relation to the Buddha’s unsurpassed perfect enlightenment by which there is one who realizes, that which is realized, the time of realization, or the means whereby realization occurs. All are utterly ungraspable.”
The Buddha said: “Subhuti! So it is! So it is! It is exactly as you have said.
“Subhuti! When a great bodhisattva has no attainment whatsoever with regard to all dharmas, the bodhisattva does not think: ‘I shall realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment; by means of that dharma I shall realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment; because of this dharma, at that time and in that place, I shall realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.’ Why? Subhuti! Because great bodhisattvas who deeply cultivate prajnaparamita are free from all such discriminations. Why? Subhuti! Because profound prajnaparamita is without discrimination.”
