Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the palace of the Noble Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Holy Sovereign Beholder) upon Mount Potalaka. That solitary mountain was formed of every kind of precious jewel, like the pure and undefiled gold of Jambūdvīpa; all the rare treasures of the Maṇi Jewel King constantly radiated a wondrous luminosity of marvelous hues. There were also Kalpavṛkṣa wish-fulfilling celestial trees that ever sent forth the fragrances of innumerable asaṃkhyeya substances—Surabhi, aloeswood, and sandalwood. The Kusuma flowers, soft and delightful, of subtle and wondrous colors, fell drifting down, adorning every place.

There were also immeasurable hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans who came to the place of the Buddha, bowed their heads in homage and made offerings, reverently honoring and praising him, and with single-minded concentration placed their palms together and silently listened to the Dharma.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to the Brahma King: "The Tathāgata speaks the Dharma: good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the end. With skillful language he expounds the profundity of the Dharma. With the mark of the pure conduct (brahmacarya)—unmixed, perfect, and pure—he speaks the Dharma as is fitting, for the benefit of sentient beings.

These One Hundred and Eight Names of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the Noble Sovereign Beholder—if there be one who is able to hear them, then for hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of incalculable kalpas he shall not fall into the evil destinies. Should that person have committed the five offenses of immediate retribution (ānantarya), their karma shall be utterly extinguished, and life after life, kalpa after kalpa, they shall attain the Knowledge of Former Lives (pūrvanivāsānusmṛti-jñāna).

The One Hundred and Eight Secret Names and Luminous Mantra of Avalokiteśvara, the Noble Sovereign Beholder, are these:

At that time, the Buddha said to the Brahma Heaven and to Śakra (Indra): "If there be one who upholds, recites, and chants these One Hundred and Eight Secret Names and Luminous Mantra of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the Noble Sovereign Beholder, know that this person, life after life and kalpa after kalpa, shall ever behold the Noble Sovereign Beholder. If one constantly upholds them, one shall attain great wealth and nobility.

One shall attain: intelligence, valor and might, dignified bearing, a wondrous voice (a marvelous and subtle sound), and eloquence; and one shall ever know the meaning of all dharmas and enter the maṇḍala. As for all the siddhis of the True Words (mantra) that one has sought, all shall be accomplished. If one keeps them in mind at dawn and at dusk, one shall forever be free of illness and suffering, of boils, sores and scabies, and of disorders of the vital breath.

After death, one shall be reborn in the World of Utmost Bliss (Sukhāvatī) in the Western direction."

Then the World-Honored One said to the Brahma King: "If there be one who upholds the names of as many Buddhas as the sands of sixty-two koṭis of Ganges Rivers, and is moreover able, to the end of bodily life (their whole life long), to make the four kinds of offerings, does that person obtain a fruit of recompense that is great or small?"

The Brahma King said: "Very great, World-Honored One! Very great, Well-Gone One (Sugata)!"

The Buddha said: "If there be one who upholds the One Hundred and Eight Names of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the Noble Sovereign Beholder—even to the extent of paying homage and making offerings for but a single instant—then the fruit of recompense of these two persons is the same, without any difference.

O Brahma King! Know that one who upholds, reads, and recites the One Hundred and Eight Names of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the Noble Sovereign Beholder, shall attain immeasurable, boundless blessings and rewards such as these. How much more so one who upholds, reads, and recites them to the end of bodily life: the merit reaped, life after life and kalpa after kalpa, can never be exhausted."

At that time, when the World-Honored One had finished speaking these words, the Great Brahma Heavenly King, Śakra the Lord of Devas, together with the Eightfold Assembly of devas and nāgas, and all sentient beings, having heard what the Buddha said, all faithfully received it and reverently put it into practice.
