At that time, Bodhisattva Joyful King addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One, is it true that the great bodhisattvas now present in this assembly have attained samadhi and acquired eighty-four thousand paramita Dharma gates?”

The Buddha told Joyful King: “Indeed it is so. In this assembly are great bodhisattva-mahasattvas who have attained samadhi and entered the eighty-four thousand ultimate Dharma gates leading to the other shore—the paramitas. In brief, they possess all the samadhis and dharanis. During the Worthy Kalpa, these bodhisattvas will all attain unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment, apart from the four Tathagatas who have already attained Buddhahood during this Worthy Kalpa.”

Bodhisattva Joyful King again addressed the Buddha: “May the Tathagata proclaim the names of the bodhisattvas who will attain Buddhahood in the future, thereby bringing abundant benefit to devas and humans, securing peace for the world, preserving the Buddha-Dharma so that it may long endure, revealing the luminous Dharma of future bodhisattvas, and ensuring that their resolve to seek the unsurpassed path never grows weary.”

The Buddha told Joyful King: “Listen attentively and abide in wholesome mindfulness. I shall explain this for you.”

“We respectfully receive the World-Honored One’s teaching.”

The World-Honored One then proclaimed the one thousand names of the Buddhas of the Worthy Kalpa, headed by Krakucchanda Buddha:

(Having now bowed to all one thousand Buddhas, we disciples entrust our lives to them in repentance, praying that in the future we may behold the Buddhas and attain the fruit of Buddhahood. Therefore, today we take refuge in the Buddhas.)

These are the names of the Buddhas who appear during the Worthy Kalpa. Those who hear these one thousand names and then sincerely bow in homage and take refuge will swiftly attain the fruit of nirvana. Wise persons who hear these Buddha names should single-mindedly retain them and never relinquish them.

They should be diligent and vigorous, not letting this excellent opportunity slip away and thereby falling into evil destinies to undergo suffering and affliction. They should abide securely in the precepts, follow extensive learning, always delight in the practice of seclusion, and perfect profound patience. Such persons will encounter these one thousand Buddhas.

If they constantly uphold, recite, and bow to these thousand Buddha names, they will extinguish the karmic hindrances created throughout boundless asamkhyeya kalpas. They will certainly attain samadhis, spiritual powers, unobstructed wisdom, and the dharani Dharma gates possessed by the Buddhas. In accordance with circumstances, they will teach the Dharma according to all sutras and texts, and every form of wisdom will accord with the Dharma of samadhi.

They should constantly seek to cultivate the Dharma of samadhi, always practice purity, never give rise to deceit, never harbor jealousy, abandon gain and fame, and constantly practice the six principles of harmony and reverence. By accomplishing such practices, they will swiftly realize all samadhis.
