The Sanskrit text of the PRAJNAPARAMITA HEART SUTRA was translated by the Tripitaka Master of the Great Tang. When the Tripitaka Master journeyed to India, he reached Yizhou and spent the night within the bodhimanda of Konghui Monastery. There he encountered an ailing monk and inquired about his condition and mobility.

During their conversation, the monk sighed in admiration of the Dharma Master, saying: “To forget one’s own body for the sake of the Dharma is truly rare! Although the journey to the five regions of India involves more than a hundred thousand adversities—the road crosses rivers of sand and deep waves of the Weak Water; north winds arise everywhere; grasses grow thick and fill the way, causing travelers grief; at times the Demon Mountains wail, while falling leaves precede weapons in the wilderness; at dawn one crosses snowy peaks, and at dusk avalanches descend; monkeys and apes cling to trees; the landscape abounds in chimei, strange spirits of mountains and marshes that harm people; green mountains rise range upon range, winding like white clouds crowned with snow;

trees gather upon Vulture Peak; emerald mountains tower into the sky; the road is difficult and beset with many disasters—how will you make the journey?

I possess the essential Heart Dharma-gate of the Buddhas of the three times. If you receive and uphold it, it can protect you throughout your travels.” He then orally transmitted it to the Dharma Master, and early the next morning the monk departed. After the Tripitaka Master had prepared his provisions, he gradually left the borders of the Tang realm.

Whenever he encountered hardships on the road, or whenever vegetarian food was offered, he remembered it and recited it forty-nine times. Whenever he lost his way, a transformation being appeared to guide him. Whenever he thought of food, food appeared.

Whatever he sincerely prayed for was present before him.

When he reached Nalanda Monastery in Magadha, Central India, and circumambulated the Sutra Treasury in due order, he suddenly encountered the former monk. The monk said: “After passing through many hardships and dangers, I rejoice that you have reached this place. Long ago in the land of Cina, this humble one transmitted to you the essential Heart Dharma-gate of the Buddhas of the three times. Through this experience it protected you on your journey, enabling you swiftly to obtain the scriptures and fulfill your heart’s aspiration. I am Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.” Having spoken, he flew into the sky.

Thus an extraordinary auspicious sign was manifested, and this sutra proved efficacious. Believe that prajna is the essential key of the noble ones. By practicing according to the teaching, one will certainly cross to the shore of awakening and penetrate the ultimate intent of the Tathagata. Why should one need to pass through three incalculable eons? Reciting and chanting the Tathagata’s sutra can eliminate the three obstructions. Those who sincerely receive and uphold the import of its words, its essential principle, must indeed be diligent.

Translated by imperial command by Amoghavajra, specially advanced and appointed Minister of the Court of State Ceremonial, bearing the honorific title “One Equal to the Three Dukes,” enfeoffed as Duke of Su, posthumously awarded the office of Minister of Works, granted a fief of three thousand households, and imperially styled Great Discerning and Correct Expounder.
