Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling together with the great Bodhisattvas in the World of Peace and Bliss.

Their names were: Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, Universal Light Bodhisattva, Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva Dispeller of All Fear, the Bodhisattva Holder of All Pure Auspiciousness, the Bodhisattva Holder of All Marks of Merit, the Bodhisattva Holder of the Sun, Moon, and Three Times, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, and other such great Bodhisattvas as the foremost leaders.

At that time, the Great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara came to the place of the World-Honored One, then bowed his head in homage, his forehead touching the Buddha's feet, and withdrew to sit at one side.

Then the goddess Mahāśrī also came to the place of the Buddha, then bowed her head in homage, her forehead touching the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him immeasurable hundreds of thousands of times, likewise paid homage to all the Bodhisattvas of the World of Peace and Bliss, and withdrew to sit at one side.

When the World-Honored One saw that the goddess Mahāśrī possessed immeasurable hundreds of thousands of meritorious adornments, surrounded by a koṭi of Tathāgatas, and was praised and extolled by all Śakra, Brahmā, and the Four World-Protecting Kings, he then, with the great voice of Brahmā's sound, said to the Great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara:

"O Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva! If there is any king, prince, bhikṣu, bhikṣuṇī, pure-faithful man, pure-faithful woman, brahmacārin, ruler, merchant, or farmer who upholds and praises the twelve covenants together with the one hundred and eight stainless names of the goddess Mahāśrī, then all the people within that country will have all their fears and all their oppressive sufferings extinguished. All enemies and bandits, as well as the fears arising from humans and non-humans, will likewise be unable to cause harm. They will obtain wealth and treasures and an abundance of grain ripening in plenty. The goddess Mahāśrī will always dwell within the country of those rulers."

Then those great Bodhisattvas all spoke these words:

"Excellent, excellent! Those words of the World-Honored One are most marvelous. If anyone upholds the name of the goddess Mahāśrī, then they will obtain such merit and benefit."

Thereupon the Fearless Great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara then said to the Buddha:

"World-Honored One! Where has the goddess Mahāśrī planted her roots of goodness?"

The Buddha said:

"The goddess Mahāśrī has planted her roots of goodness in the presence of Tathāgatas, Worthy Ones, Perfectly Enlightened Ones as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River.

O Fearless Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva! In a past age there was a world named Jewel-Born. In that land a Buddha appeared in the world, named Jewel-Flower Ocean of Merit - Lapis Lazuli Golden Mountain - Golden Radiance Auspicious Tathāgata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One. The goddess Mahāśrī planted her roots of goodness in the presence of that Buddha, and likewise in the presence of the other Tathāgatas.

Because of reciting the names of such Tathāgatas, the roots of goodness of the goddess Mahāśrī were accomplished, and she was always protected and kept in mind by those Tathāgatas. Through this, the goddess Mahāśrī is able to liberate from all transgressions and obstructions; to extinguish all afflictions; to cause all bodies to become stainless; to summon and increase all wealth, treasures, and grain; to dispel poverty; to gather and summon all devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas; to bring to a halt all oppressive sufferings and all disputes and battles; and to accomplish the Six Pāramitās.

If anyone reverently upholds, reads, and recites the names of those Tathāgatas, then that good man or good woman will give rise to a very great accumulation of merit.

All those Tathāgatas bestowed a prophecy upon the goddess Mahāśrī, saying:

"In a future age, you shall, in the World of Auspicious Jewel Adornment, attain Perfect and Complete Enlightenment, named Auspicious Maṇi-Jewel-Born Tathāgata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One. In that world there will be myriad kinds of celestial jewels used for adornment. Only that Tathāgata will emit light in that world. The Bodhisattvas within the world of that Buddha-land will naturally possess radiance and will obtain immeasurable lifespans. In the empty space above that land, the sound of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha will resound forth. All the Bodhisattvas born within the world of that Buddha-land will be born by transformation upon daises of lotus flowers.

O Fearless Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva! This Mahāśrī mantra, together with those one hundred and eight names, can extinguish all afflictions; can crush and destroy all transgressions and obstructions; can summon all merit and benefit; can remove all unfortunate events; and can summon all merit and virtue.

If anyone upholds, reads, and recites, and likewise recites the names of those Tathāgatas, then they should rise early in the morning to burn incense and offer flowers in worship to all the Buddhas. They should also burn sandalwood incense as an offering to the goddess Mahāśrī, and only then read this Sūtra. If able to do thus, that person will, before long, obtain every auspiciousness, every peace, bliss, and joy, the support of all the devas, and the accomplishment of all their undertakings."

When the Buddha had finished expounding this Sūtra, the Great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara together with the goddess Mahāśrī, and all the great assembly, upon hearing the Buddha's teaching, all gave rise to minds of great rejoicing and faithfully received it and reverently put it into practice.
