Throughout all the Worlds in the ten directions

All the Lions among Men (the Buddhas) of the three times

Now I pay homage to them all, leaving none out

Using a body, speech, and mind that are pure

With bodies as numerous as the fine dust-motes of the realms

I pay homage to all the Tathāgatas

Bringing my Mind and Intention before all the Buddhas

By the power of these Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra

Upon the tip of a single dust-mote are Buddha-realms as numerous as dust-motes

Therein the Buddhas and the Buddha's Sons are seated

The Dharma-Realm in just this way leaves none out

I believe all the Buddhas pervade it completely

In that place, the ocean of Merit is inexhaustible

Using the ocean of Merit's myriad sounds

To proclaim and extol the Merit of the Tathāgatas

I forever praise all the Sugatas

Wreaths of supreme flowers and unguent perfumes

Together with Music and beautiful canopies

All adornments most supreme

I offer them all to the Tathāgatas

With beautiful garments and every kind of incense

Powdered incense gathered and heaped up like Mount Sumeru

Supreme bright lamps together with burning incense

I offer them all to the Tathāgatas

All Offerings vast, great, and unsurpassed

I resolve upon them all toward the Tathāgatas

By the power of supreme resolution in the Practice of Samantabhadra

I pay homage and make offerings to all the Tathāgatas

Whatever Karmic Sins I have ever committed

All born of greed, hatred, and delusion

Done through body, speech, and mind likewise

I lay them all bare and confess them all

All the Merit of sentient beings in the ten directions

Those Training, those Beyond Training, the Pratyekabuddhas

Together with the Buddha's Sons and the Tathāgatas

In all of it I rejoice and take delight

All the Lamps of the World (the Awakened Ones) in the ten directions

Who, having realized Bodhi, have attained freedom from defilement

Now I exhort and beseech all the World-Honored Ones

To turn the Wondrous, Unsurpassed Wheel of the Dharma

To all the Ones who wish to manifest Nirvāṇa

I join my palms and beseech Them all

I pray You abide long for kalpas as numerous as the dust-motes of the realms

For the benefit and joyful peace of all the multitude of beings

Paying homage, making offerings, and confessing transgressions

Rejoicing in Merit and exhorting and beseeching

The Merit I have thus gathered and stored

I dedicate it all to Bodhi

I train and study among all the Tathāgatas

To perfect the Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra

I vow to make offerings to the Buddhas of the past

And to all who now abide throughout the ten directions

May all the lands of the ten directions

Become vast and great and entirely pure

May all the Buddhas approach the Bodhi tree (the King among Awakening Trees)

The ranks of the Buddha's Sons all filling them throng on throng

May all the sentient beings of the ten directions

All be at peace and joyful, free from every calamity

May all the multitude of beings gain the benefit of the Dharma

May they attain accord with their hearts' wishes

While I practice and cultivate toward Bodhi

In all the destinies may I remember my former lives

If in the various lifetimes I undergo birth and death

May I always be one who has gone forth as a renunciant

May my moral conduct be undefiled and ever pure

Ever practicing without lack and without flaw

The speech of the Devas, Nāgas, and Yakṣas

The speech of the Kumbhāṇḍas and the speech of Humans

All the speech of the multitude of beings

May I use all their sounds to teach the Dharma

May I ever increase in the practice of the Wondrous Pāramitās

Never within the Mind of Bodhi giving rise to confusion

All transgressions together with obstructions

May they all be utterly extinguished, leaving none

Amid karma, afflictions, and the realm of Māra

May I attain liberation along the path of the World

Just as the lotus flower clings not to the water

Just as the Sun and Moon are not caught by the empty Sky (open space)

May the sufferings of the evil destinies be stilled

May all the multitude of beings be made joyful and at peace

Bringing benefit to all the multitude of beings

Reaching to all the realms in the ten directions

Ever practicing in accord with all sentient beings

May the Wondrous Practices of Bodhi be brought to perfection

The Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra, I cultivate and study

I, in kalpas yet to come, will practice and cultivate

May all who journey together with me

Forever come together and assemble in common

In the karma of body and speech and the karma of Mind

May we, with one and the same Vow and Practice, cultivate together

May all the good friends who benefit me

Who for my sake reveal the practice of Samantabhadra

Forever come together and assemble with them in common

And there may all attain a mind that never wearies

May I ever behold the Tathāgatas

Together with the Buddha's Sons surrounding them on every side

And there may I raise up great offerings to them all

In all the kalpas yet to come, without growing weary

Forever upholding the wondrous Dharma of the Buddhas

May I cause the Practice of Bodhi to shine forth

And purify together the Practice of Samantabhadra

In all the kalpas yet to come, may I practice and cultivate

While circulating onward within the various states of Existence

May my Merit and Wisdom prove inexhaustible

In Prajñā, Skillful Means, Concentration, and liberation

May I attain the inexhaustible Treasury of Merit

Like the dust-motes upon a single dust-mote, so are the lands

The Buddha-realms therein beyond conceiving or discussing

The Buddhas together with the Buddha's Sons seated within them

May I ever behold the Supreme Wondrous Practice of Bodhi

Thus throughout all the immeasurable directions

Upon the tip of a single hair are held the three times

The ocean of Buddhas together with the ocean of lands

I enter and practice through oceans of kalpas

Within a single sound is the ocean of Merit

Every pure utterance of the Tathāgatas

Every sound that the minds of the multitude of beings delight in

May I ever gain entry to the Eloquence of the Buddhas

Within those inexhaustible sounds

Of all the Tathāgatas of the three times

When they turn the Wheel of the Wondrous Principle

By the power of Wisdom may I enter them all

In a single kṣaṇa, into all that is to come

May I enter all the kalpas yet to come

All the immeasurable kalpas of the three times

In a single kṣaṇa may I enter koṭis of kalpas

All the Lions among Men of the three times

In a single kṣaṇa may I behold them all

And into those realms may I ever gain entry

By the might of the Practice of Liberation Like an Illusion

All the lands Wondrously Adorned of the three realms

May they appear and arise upon the tip of a dust-mote

Thus in all the inexhaustible places and directions

May I enter the adorned realms of the Buddhas

All the Lamps of the World (the Buddhas) of the lives to come

Who all awaken and turn the Wheel of the Dharma

Who manifest Nirvāṇa, the Ultimate Stillness

To the dwelling of those World-Honored Ones may I come

By the power of Supernatural Stride, swift and everywhere

Relying upon the universal gateway of mighty power

By the Merit of the Mighty Power of Practice

The all-pervading practice of the Mighty Power of Loving-Kindness

By the Mighty Power of Merit, adorned and upright everywhere

The unattached practice of the Mighty Power of Wisdom

By the power of Prajñā, Skillful Means, and Right Concentration

May the Mighty Power of Bodhi be all gathered and stored

May all be purified within the Power of Karma

Now may I crush and destroy the power of the afflictions

And subdue entirely the power of Māra (the Demon of obstruction)

May I perfect entirely the power of Samantabhadra

And cause the ocean of lands everywhere to be made pure

May I liberate entirely all sentient beings

And contemplate fully the oceans of the Dharma

Together with reaching the source within the ocean of Wisdom

May I cause the ocean of Practices everywhere to be made pure

And further cause the ocean of Vows to be wholly fulfilled

To the Oceanic Assembly of all the Buddhas may I make offerings

Through kalpas of the Practice of Samantabhadra without weariness

All the Tathāgatas of the three times

With their Vows and Practices of Bodhi in every distinction

May I fulfill them entirely, leaving none

Through the Practice of Samantabhadra realizing Bodhi

Among the Buddha-Tathāgatas there is an eldest son

Whose title is the Honored Samantabhadra

May I, with that Wisdom and likewise the Wondrous Practice

Dedicate all roots of goodness

May the karma of body, speech, and mind be made pure

May the Practices be pure and the lands be pure

Like that Wisdom which bears the name Samantabhadra

May I this very day be equal to that rank

The Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra, adorned and upright everywhere

I practice the Practice of Mañjuśrī

In the kalpas yet to come, without weariness

May I perfect them all, doing so without remainder

The Supreme Practices I have cultivated cannot be reckoned

All the Merit beyond all measuring

Having abided in immeasurable cultivation

I shall fully know all those Spiritual Powers

Even should empty space reach its end

Should sentient beings, leaving none, reach their end likewise

Together with karma and afflictions reaching their end

Even unto that end, may my vows also be exhausted

Were there boundless lands in the ten directions

Adorned with jewels offered to all the Buddhas

The wondrous joys of the Devas and of human folk, the Supreme Bliss

Bestowed as alms through kalpas as numerous as dust-motes

If one, upon hearing this King of Supreme Vows

Should hear it through and give rise to a Mind of Supreme Resolution

Thirsting and yearning for Supreme Bodhi

The store of Merit attained is far greater than the former

That one will become free of the evil destinies

And be entirely far removed from evil companions

Swiftly will they behold Amitāyus (Limitless Life)

Merely by remembering the Supreme Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra

They gain great benefit and an increase in lifespan

Well will it come to pass for the life of this person

Just as the Great Bodhisattva Samantabhadra

That person, before long, will attain it

Whatever karmic sins of the five Heinous Acts have been committed

Done through lack of Wisdom

When the Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra are recited

They are swiftly extinguished, leaving none

Wisdom, beauty of form, and excellent marks

Noble Lineage and good Birth shall be achieved

Hard for Māras and Heretics to destroy

Ever in the three realms shall they be honored with offerings

Swiftly will they go to the Bodhi tree

And having arrived, sit down, benefiting sentient beings

Awakening to Bodhi, turning the Wheel of the Dharma

Crushing and subduing Māra together with his retinue

If there is one who upholds these Vows of Samantabhadra

Reading, reciting, receiving, upholding, and expounding them

The Tathāgatas all know the fruit and recompense

That Supreme Bodhi shall be attained — let no doubt arise

Like the valiant Wisdom of Wondrously Auspicious Mañjuśrī

And likewise the Wisdom of Samantabhadra

While I am training and studying therein

May all roots of goodness be dedicated entirely

All the Tathāgatas of the three times

By this dedication, may my vows be supreme

I take all the roots of goodness

And dedicate them all to the Practice of Samantabhadra

At the time of death, when life is relinquished

May all karmic obstructions be transformed

May I draw near and behold Amitābha (Limitless Light)

And swiftly reach that World of Utmost Bliss

Having reached that place, these Supreme Vows

Shall all appear before me, complete and entire

I shall perfect them all, leaving none

Benefiting sentient beings within the World

In that Assembly of the Buddha, most adorned and upright

Born within a supreme lotus flower

There I shall obtain my own prophecy of awakening

Drawing near to Amitābha, the Tathāgata of Limitless Light

There, having received the prophecy

I shall transform into koṭis of immeasurable kinds

Widely working benefit and joy for sentient beings

In the Worlds of the ten directions, by the power of Wisdom

If one recites and upholds the Vows of Samantabhadra

All the roots of goodness that have been gathered and stored

In a single kṣaṇa shall be attained as vowed

By this, may the multitude of beings attain the Supreme Vows

May I attain this Practice of Samantabhadra

The supreme, immeasurable gathering of Merit and Virtue

May all the multitude of beings sunk in evil

All come to the palace of Amitābha, the Buddha of Limitless Light

Praise of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas

(Excerpted from the end of the Sūtra of the Maṇḍala of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas)

The gateway to the city-palace of Perfect Quiescence

That can extinguish entirely the gate

The Dharma that the Buddha enjoys and partakes of

Savior of the world, I bow my head in homage

From the hand pours forth pure water

That can clear away the hungry, thirsting ghosts

The Wish-Fulfilling Tree of the three realms

I bow in homage to the Lotus-Holder (Padma-pāṇi)

The water of Great Loving-Kindness made into the heart

That can quench the fire of anger

I bow in homage to the Honored Maitreya

Who can sever the bowstring of Desire

Ākāśa-garbha, of Wondrous Wisdom

The Honored One of the Empty-Space Stillness

Who liberates from the stream of birth and death

I bow in homage to the Son of the Buddha's Heart (the son of the Buddha's mind)

The boundless Delusion of sentient beings

That can sever the useless mind

I bow in homage to Samantabhadra

The Foremost Son of the Sugata (the son who is the foremost among the Sugata's sons)

Toiling and laboring like a servant

Surpassing and overcoming the army of Māra (the Demon of obstruction)

I bow in homage to the Vajra-Holder (Vajra-pāṇi)

Who can pronounce all the Vidyās

I bow in homage to Wondrously Auspicious Mañjuśrī

In the form of a wondrous youth

Who extends the lamp of Wisdom everywhere

Outshining the radiance of the three realms

Sarva-Nīvaraṇa-Viṣkambhin (Remover of All Obstructions)

For this reason I bow in homage

The Honored One of Inexhaustible Wisdom

Who can give rise to eloquence that never runs dry

Like the Earth upon which sentient beings

Lean and depend without ever being cut off

The Treasury of Firm Wisdom and Compassion

Kṣitigarbha, I bow my head in homage

These true Sons of the Sugata

By praising them, Merit is reaped

By means of these sentient beings

Thus they become Vessels of Praise (objects worthy of being extolled)

PRAISE OF THE VOWS AND PRACTICES OF THE BODHISATTVA SAMANTABHADRA

(End)

The Dhāraṇī for the Swift Fulfillment of the Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra is:

Namaḥ striya-dhvikānāṃ (1) tathāgatānāṃ (2) Oṃ (3) asu-vāra vigāna svāhā (4)

NAMAḤ STRIYA-DHVIKĀNĀṂ _ TATHĀGATĀNĀṂ (Homage to all the Tathāgatas of the three times)

OṂ (Drawing in and summoning) _ ASU-VĀRA (the supreme wondrousness of life) VIGĀNA (revulsion toward evil) SVĀHĀ (the accomplishment of all that is good and auspicious).

Each day recite the Vows and Practices of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, and thereafter recite this Mantra. As soon as one has recited it but a single time, the Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra are all brought to perfection as the Cause of Samādhi; one swiftly attains the manifestation of Samādhi; the two kinds of adornment — Merit and Virtue, and Wisdom — are attained as a firm and enduring Dharma, swiftly to be accomplished.
