Exposition of Pudgalavastu (The Section on Persons)
Background
Pudgalavastu is a section in the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda tradition, belonging to the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya. This work deals with issues related to "pudgala" (person, individual, or subject) in the context of the Sangha. Its principal purpose is to guide bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, and the Buddhist community in handling matters concerning individuals in the place of practice and in collective cultivation.
The Vinaya Piṭaka in general was built from specific situations that occurred in the Sangha during the Buddha’s lifetime. Pudgalavastu continues this tradition, providing rules that help the Sangha maintain discipline, harmony, and spiritual purity. It reflects the deep understanding of the Buddha Dharma concerning the nature of the "person" in the context of communal practice.
Main Content
Pudgalavastu focuses on classifying and evaluating kinds of individuals according to their spiritual and ethical level. The sūtra divides people into many categories: from monastics of the highest virtue, such as arhats, to those just beginning practice, and also special cases that need to be managed in particular ways.
In particular, Pudgalavastu addresses situations of conflict, dispute, or violations of conduct within the Sangha. It does not merely point out faults, but also guides how to handle them fairly, compassionately, and educationally. The law here is not a set of rigid regulations, but an expression of wisdom and compassion intended to help each individual progress on the path of practice.
This section also resolves issues concerning the management of communal property, assignment of duties, and treatment of individuals with medical or psychological problems. Every regulation is directed toward the final goal: maintaining the concentration and purity of the Sangha so that the Dharma can be practiced effectively.
Practical Meaning
Pudgalavastu teaches that practice is not the work of an isolated individual, but a process that occurs within a community context. Each person has responsibility not only to themselves, but also to others.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
