Scripture Commentary: The Concluding Supplement for Bhikṣuṇīs
Background
The Concluding Supplement for Bhikṣuṇīs (bhikṣuṇī-prakīrṇaka) is an important concluding section within the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda tradition. This section was compiled in order to address practical matters arising in the monastic life of bhikṣuṇīs—women who had gone forth into homelessness in accordance with the teachings of the Blessed One Śākyamuni Buddha.
During the time when the Buddha was still present in the world, the bhikṣuṇīs initially encountered difficulties in establishing their own distinct mode of practice. The Buddha was at first reluctant to admit bhikṣuṇīs into the Saṅgha, but following the entreaties of Mahāprajāpatī, he granted permission for the establishment of the Bhikṣuṇī Saṅgha. However, the Buddha also set forth eight additional articles of great importance—the Garudhammas—to ensure the proper oversight and protection of the bhikṣuṇīs' practice.
This supplement contains detailed rules, specific cases, and practical guidelines concerning how bhikṣuṇīs should live within the community, how they should interact with bhikṣus, and how ethical matters arising in the course of practice should be resolved.
Principal Contents
The Concluding Supplement for Bhikṣuṇīs contains detailed Vinaya provisions pertaining to the daily life of bhikṣuṇīs. The matters addressed include: rules governing the wearing of robes and appropriate dress in accordance with the bhikṣuṇī identity; restrictions on contact with bhikṣus; provisions concerning residential communities and the sharing of practice spaces; regulations regarding personal property and requisites; as well as requirements for integrity and purity of conduct.
Of particular note, this section emphasizes the role of senior bhikṣuṇīs in guiding and overseeing newly ordained bhikṣuṇīs.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
