Exposition of Vinaya Ekottara 10b
Background
The Vinaya Ekottara 10b Sūtra belongs to the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition. It is a basic legal section within the canon, containing the rules of religious practice that Buddha Śākyamuni taught to the monks and nuns in the Sangha community.
“Ekottara” means “increasing one by one,” referring to a type of text in which each successive section presents one more factor than the previous one. The tenth section (10b) concerns regulations on the first ten dhammas (Dasa Sikkhapada or Dasa Dhamma), the basic foundations of monastic life.
In its historical context, the Vinaya Piṭaka was compiled to maintain order and purity in the community of monks and nuns, thereby protecting the true Dharma from one generation to the next. These rules are not restrictions imposed from outside, but voluntary guidelines helping monastics progress on the path to awakening.
Main Content
Vinaya Ekottara 10b is usually related to ten dhammas (Dasa Dhamma) that every monk and nun should observe. These injunctions include basic matters of moral conduct (Sīla), focusing on respect, personal discipline, and harmony in the community.
These ten items are usually understood as essential commitments: observing the five precepts (Pañcasīla) or higher levels such as the bhikkhunī precepts, eight or ten precepts. They include abstaining from killing, abstaining from taking what is not given, abstaining from improper sexual conduct, abstaining from false speech, and abstaining from intoxicants that cloud awareness. In addition, there are items related to meal times, sleeping posture, and other material needs.
The important point is that these regulations are not meant to limit personal freedom, but to create conditions for the mind to develop strongly and purely. Each precept is a step in the journey of practice, helping the practitioner reduce causes of distraction and affliction.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
