Sūtra of Questions on the Rains Retreat Discipline
Background
The Vassapucchā Sūtra (Pāli: vassapucchā, meaning “questions about the rainy season”) is an important part of the Vinaya Piṭaka, especially in relation to the Rains Retreat rule (Vassa) of the Sangha. This teaching is preserved in the Vinaya texts of the Theravāda tradition to guide bhikkhus concerning disciplinary matters during the rains retreat, the three-month rainy period, usually from the fourth to the seventh lunar month, when bhikkhus gather at monasteries to practice the holy life without wandering.
This sūtra is recorded in the form of questions from Upali, the eminent authority skilled in Vinaya learning, addressed to the Buddha who had entered parinirvana, or preserved through questions asked by other members of the Sangha concerning unclear points in the Vinaya. This reflects the practical character of the Vinaya Piṭaka: it is not a set of abstract rules, but concrete guidance capable of answering each issue that arises.
Main Content
The Sūtra of Questions on the Rains Retreat Discipline addresses questions related to the practice of Vassa retreat. The matters discussed include the conditions for beginning Vassa, such as being present at the monastery and being accepted by the Sangha; the regulations concerning leaving the monastery during the retreat; offenses committed by failing to observe the three-month period; and how to handle special situations such as illness or emergencies.
The sūtra also clarifies “Upasampada,” the full ordination of a bhikkhu, and whether Vassa is related to the calculation of the period since ordination. In addition, there are questions concerning the distinction between the formal Vassa retreat (Vassika) and special cases, as well as rules concerning the practice of Pavāraṇa, the invitation or self-declaration ceremony at the end of the rainy season, when bhikkhus have an opportunity to correct the faults they have committed.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
