THE SUTTA ON INSTRUCTION (OVĀDA)
Background
The Ovāda Sutta lies in the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Pāli Canon, an important part of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition. This sutta records the instructions of the Buddha and the elder monks to students in the process of learning and practice.
In the context of the early monastery, when the Dharma had just been promulgated, bhikkhus needed clear guidance on how to live ethically and cultivate the spiritual life. Ovāda, a word meaning “instruction” or “admonition,” served as an important legal and Dharma instrument for transmitting the principles necessary for personal development and harmony within the Sangha.
The Vinaya Piṭaka as a whole is the ethical foundation of Theravāda Buddhism, establishing rules of conduct and areas needing correction in the monastery. The Ovāda Sutta represents the educational and admonitory aspect, complementing the stricter regulations.
Main Content
The Ovāda Sutta focuses on instructions that are constructive and encourage the spirit of practice. These instructions are often given to new bhikkhus or to monastics who need to be reminded of the core goal of the Dharma.
The main content revolves around such aspects as the need to maintain energy (viriya), cultivate right concentration (sammā-samādhi), and develop wisdom (paññā). The sutta also emphasizes the importance of observing ethical foundations (sīla) as the basis for all spiritual practices.
The advice in this sutta is not punitive, but consists of admonitions filled with loving-kindness (mettā). They reflect the principle of Buddhist education: not to harm or shame, but to help the learner become clearly aware of faults and find the right path.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
