36. "A rule of training: One must not lick one's fingers while eating."
One must not lick one's fingers while eating: If a bhikkhu is eating such things as meat broth, fat, or sweet sticky food that adheres to his fingers, he must not lick them; instead, he should press his fingers against the rim of the bowl and wipe them so that the food is gathered together in one place, and then eat it.
If honey, rock sugar, or salt adheres to the tips of the fingers, it is permissible to lick them; there is no offense. However, if one is heedless of the sense faculties and licks one's fingers while eating, this is to show disregard for the rule of training. Except in the case of one whose mind is deranged, there is no offense. Therefore it is said:
"A rule of training: One must not lick one's fingers while eating."
When the Buddha was residing at Sāvatthī, as fully described above. At that time, a householder came to the monastery and offered a meal to the Saṅgha. While eating, the group of six bhikkhus chewed their food noisily, and people of the world criticized them, saying:
—Why do the disciples of the Sakyan recluse eat like pigs and rats? These are depraved persons — what sort of moral conduct do they have!
The bhikkhus then brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. The Buddha immediately instructed that the group of six bhikkhus be summoned. When they had come, the Buddha asked:
—Did this actually happen as reported?
—It is true, Blessed One.
—From this day forward, you must not chew food noisily.
Thereupon the Buddha commanded all the bhikkhus to assemble, and for the sake of ten benefits he laid down a rule for the bhikkhus — one which, even if already heard, must be heard again:
