– CLARIFICATION OF THE FIRST SECTION OF THE 141 PĀCITTIYAS
127. RULE: HAVING A BHIKKHUNĪ BATHE ONESELF.
When the Buddha was residing at Vesālī, after the Blessed One had established a rule not permitting bhikkhunīs to have laywomen scrub and bathe them, the bhikkhunī Bhaddrā then ordered another bhikkhunī to scrub her. The bhikkhunīs brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, the Buddha instructed: Even those who have already heard this must hear it again:
—If a bhikkhunī who is not ill has another bhikkhunī scrub and bathe her, she commits a pācittiya offense.
If she massages without scrubbing, she commits a Vinaya transgression. If she scrubs without massaging, she also commits a Vinaya transgression. If she does both, she commits a pācittiya offense.
If a bhikkhu who is not ill has another bhikkhu massage or scrub him, he commits a Vinaya transgression. Therefore the Blessed One has spoken thus (as above).
