– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– PRECEPTS FOR BHIKKHUNĪS

– ON THE BEGINNING SECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS RULES

ONE MUST NOT ENTER A SECULAR BATHHOUSE TO BATHE.

When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time a young woman of the Śākya clan, of the Māla family, had gone forth into homelessness, and then entered a secular bathhouse to bathe. A dissolute young man thereupon entered the bathing room and violated her celibacy. The bhikkhunīs then reported this to Mahāprajāpatī. In the end, the Buddha instructed: "From this time forward, I do not permit entering a secular bathhouse. If one is ill, one may kindle a fire in one's room, apply oil to the body, and scrub oneself. If a bhikkhunī enters a secular bathhouse to bathe, she commits an offense of transgressing the Vinaya. This is called the rule concerning entering a bathhouse."
