– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– PRECEPTS FOR BHIKKHUNĪS

– ON THE BEGINNING SECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS RULES

ONE MUST NOT COVER THE OPENING OF A LATRINE WHILE IT IS IN USE.

When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī, at that time a bhikkhunī built a latrine and covered its opening with an object. Some women then came and disposed of their stillborn fetuses inside it. Afterward, a certain outcaste of the caṇḍāla class lifted the cover and, seeing what was there, said: "This is the miscarried fetus of a bhikkhunī, thrown in here."

The bhikkhunīs then brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, the Buddha instructed: "From this day forward, I do not permit the covering of a latrine opening; it must be left open while in use. If one covers the opening of a latrine while it is in use, one commits an offense of transgressing the Vinaya. This is called the rule on the use of latrines."
