– PRECEPTS FOR BHIKKHUNĪS
– ON THE BEGINNING SECTION OF THE MISCELLANEOUS RULES
ONE MUST NOT WADE UPSTREAM AGAINST A FLOWING CURRENT.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time a bhikkhunī went down to bathe in a place where the current flowed swiftly, and lustful desire arose in her mind; she then waded upstream against the current, causing seminal fluid to be discharged. The bhikkhunīs then brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, the Buddha instructed: "From now on, I do not permit wading upstream against a swift-flowing current so that the water swirls into the urinary passage.
If anyone goes upstream against a current descending from the mountains, against a swiftly flowing current, or intentionally wades upstream against the current in order to diminish lustful desire, that person commits a thullaccaya offense. When bathing in a swift-flowing current, one must not face toward the current but should instead turn one's back to it. If anyone faces toward a swift-flowing current, that person commits a dukkhaṭa offense.
This is what is called a flowing current."
