– ON THE FIRST PORTION OF THE MISCELLANEOUS RULES

RULES ON SITTING

When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time a bhikkhunī was sitting cross-legged in the early part of the night and the late part of the night, and a snake crept in through her vaginal opening. The bhikkhunīs then reported this to Mahāprajāpatī. Mahāprajāpatī in turn went and presented the matter to the Blessed One.

The Buddha thereupon instructed: "Pour in a certain medicinal solution; the snake will not die but will crawl out." So they poured in that medicine, and the snake crawled out. The Buddha then rebuked that bhikkhunī: "Why were you sitting cross-legged? From now on, I do not permit sitting in such a manner.

When sitting, one should bend one leg and use the heel to cover the vaginal opening. If a bhikkhunī sits cross-legged, she commits an offense of transgressing the Vinaya."
