The teaching of conditioned arising

What is dependent origination in Buddhism?

Pāli: paṭiccasamuppāda · Sanskrit: pratītyasamutpāda · Vietnamese: Duyên khởi

Dependent origination is the principle that phenomena arise, exist, and change through many interdependent conditions, without an independent cause or a fixed self controlling everything. Its familiar formula is: when this exists, that exists; when this arises, that arises; when this does not exist, that does not exist; when this ceases, that ceases. The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination apply this principle to describe the process of suffering from ignorance to aging and death. Dependent origination is not fate, because when conditions change, outcomes can also change. Nor does it deny responsibility: our speech and actions are themselves conditions that contribute to results. In practice, learners observe an unpleasant reaction and ask which contacts, feelings, memories, and habits are feeding it, then transform the nearest condition they can.

No phenomenon stands alone

An emotion depends on the body, contact, memories, interpretation, and environment. Seeing this network of conditions helps us stop fixing ourselves or others to a permanent label.

Dependent origination opens the possibility of transformation

If suffering arises through conditions, changing those conditions matters. A pause at the stage of feeling, a different way of speaking, or a supportive environment can redirect a chain of reactions.

Frequently asked questions

Is dependent origination fate?

No. Dependent origination says that outcomes depend on conditions; when conditions change, the process can also change.

Does dependent origination deny personal responsibility?

No. Each person's intentional actions are conditions that produce consequences, so understanding dependent origination clarifies responsibility rather than removing it.

How does dependent origination differ from the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination?

Dependent origination is the general principle; the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination are a specific model describing the process by which suffering arises through twelve links.
