What Is Right View? Seeing Correctly to Follow the Right Path

Pāli: sammā diṭṭhi · Sanskrit: samyag dṛṣṭi · Vietnamese: Chánh kiến

Right view means seeing the foundational direction of the Buddhist path correctly: understanding suffering, its cause, the possibility of ending suffering, and the path of practice; understanding that intentional actions bear fruit when conditions are sufficient; and understanding that life is impermanent, with no fixed self to cling to. Right view is not stubborn attachment to one's opinions or using teachings to win arguments. It is a way of seeing that helps body, speech, and mind become less driven by ignorance. In the Noble Eightfold Path, right view comes first because how we see guides how we think, speak, act, and choose our livelihood. Beginners can start by asking: in this situation, am I seeing the suffering, causes, and consequences fully enough, or am I merely protecting my ego?

Right view is not blind belief

Right view needs to be learned from reliable sources and tested in daily life. If an understanding increases greed, anger, arrogance, or judgment, it needs to be re-examined.

From right seeing to right action

When we see that speech has consequences, we become more careful about right speech. When we see that clinging creates suffering, we have reason to practice mindfulness and let go a little.

Frequently asked questions

Does right view mean believing the correct dogma?

It is more than belief. Right view is a way of seeing that can reduce ignorance and suffering and lead to wholesome action.

Why does right view come first in the Noble Eightfold Path?

Because how we see guides our thinking, speech, actions, livelihood, and all the practice that follows.

How can I tell that I lack right view?

One sign is that your perspective increases greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, or blame rather than understanding and responsibility.
