AN EXPLANATION OF THE RATNAJVĀLATANTRA
The Sutra of the Blazing Jewel Fire
Background
The Ratnajvālatantra (The Sutra of the Blazing Jewel Fire) is recorded in the Kangyur, the Tantra section of traditional Tibetan Buddhism of the Mahāyāna-Vajrayāna tradition. This is a tantric scripture within the system of Vajrayāna study and practice, the vehicle that contains the most profound transformations of the Dharma, especially those methods connected with transforming the mind through sacred image and sound.
The Kangyur gathers tantric scriptures directly transmitted by Buddha Shakyamuni to worthy disciples. These scriptures are not made public in the way classical Dharma discourses are, because they require advanced practices and guidance from a deeply seasoned teacher. The Ratnajvālatantra belongs to this context, revealing subtle dimensions of tantric practice connected with the image of the blazing jewel, a profound symbol of Buddha-nature.
Main Content
The title “Jewel Fire” is not accidental. In the tantric tradition, “jewel” (ratna) often symbolizes three supreme qualities: Essence, the immutable qualities of the Dharmakāya; Light, luminous wisdom without obstruction; and Heat, the unceasing active energy of the Buddha-mind. “Fire” (jvāla) signifies dynamic, powerful radiance, neither terrified nor suppressed. Joined together, this image points to sublime states of mind attainable through Tantra.
This sutra, according to the classical Vajrayāna tradition, teaches practices within the expanded system of Tantra.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included.
