– Chapter 37: Connected Discourses on Women
– Part Three—The Chapter of Powers
37.28. One
S.iv,246 Vi-n 1 …
Vi-n 2—Mendicants, by possessing one power, a man continues to conquer a woman. What is that one power? The power of mastery (isariyabalena).
Vi-n 3When a woman has been conquered by the power of mastery, mendicants, the power of beauty cannot protect her, the power of wealth cannot protect her, the power of relatives cannot protect her, the power of sons cannot protect her, and the power of ethical conduct cannot protect her.
This collection was translated into Vietnamese by the Most Venerable Thích Minh Châu and published by Vạn Hạnh Monastery in the early 1980s . Later, as part of the translation and publication program for the Vietnamese Buddhist Canon, the collection was republished in 1993 and numbered from 12 to 16.
Prepared for SuttaCentral by Blake Walsh .
The “…” is an abbreviation carried over from the Pāli original itself, called peyyāla. The early canon was memorized and recited, so passages repeated verbatim from a preceding discourse were commonly contracted to an elision mark rather than written out in full. Venerable Thích Minh Châu's translation preserves this convention. Some texts therefore look short — but that is the canonical form, not missing content or a truncated translation. The elided passages can be read in full in the preceding discourses of the same chapter.
