– STORIES OF HEAVENLY MANSIONS

– B. HEAVENLY MANSIONS OF MALE BEINGS

– THE CHAPTER ON THE WELL-PLACED OFFERING

7.11

BJT 1284"This heavenly mansion is lofty, supported by pillars of maṇi-jewels, extending twelve yojanas all around, with seven hundred magnificent pinnacled halls adorned with columns made of beryl, spread and lined with gold, and beautiful.

BJT 1285There you dwell, there you drink, and there you eat. Heavenly vīṇās sound forth with sweet music, there are heavenly flavors, here are the five kinds of sensual pleasures, and women adorned with gold dance.

BJT 1286By what have you attained such a complexion as this? By what has this come to be accomplished for you here? And by what do agreeable pleasures arise for you?

BJT 1287O deity of great majesty, I ask you: 'When you were a human being, what meritorious deed did you perform? By what do you have the majesty that shines so brilliantly, and your complexion illuminates all directions?'"

BJT 1288That deity rejoiced when questioned by the venerable Moggallāna. Being asked the question, he explained which deed this result belongs to:

BJT 1289"Having carefully rearranged a garland that had been laid down carelessly, having arranged it at the stūpa of the Sugata, I became one of great spiritual power and great majesty, enjoying heavenly pleasures.

BJT 1290By that have I attained such a complexion as this. By that has this come to be accomplished for me here. And by that do agreeable pleasures arise for me.

BJT 1291Venerable monk of great majesty, I have presented to you the meritorious deed I performed when I was a human being. By that do I have the majesty that shines so brilliantly, and my complexion illuminates all directions."

The Mansion of the Well-Placed Offering.
