– STORIES OF HEAVENLY MANSIONS

– A. THE WOMEN'S HEAVENLY MANSIONS

– THE CHAPTER ON THE SEAT

1.7

BJT 53"O celestial being, you stand having boarded a boat with a golden roof. You wade into a lotus pond and gather lotus flowers with your hands.

BJT 54On account of what do you have such a complexion? On account of what has (this state of affairs) been accomplished for you here? And (on account of what) do pleasing enjoyments arise for you?

BJT 55O celestial being of great majesty, I ask you: 'When you were a human being, what meritorious deed did you do? On account of what do you have such majesty, shining brilliantly like this, and your complexion illuminates all the directions?'"

BJT 56That celestial being, joyful at being questioned by the Venerable Moggallāna, being asked the question, explained which deed this result belongs to:

BJT 57"I, when I was a human being in the human realm, in a former life in the world of human beings, having seen a monk who was lacking water, who was weary, I stood up and offered water to drink.

BJT 58Indeed, whoever stands up and offers water to drink to one who is weary and thirsty, that person obtains a river with cool water, many flowers, and many white lotuses.

BJT 59Streams always flow around that person, rivers with cool water, lined with sand. There are mango trees, sālā trees, tilakā trees, red plum trees, cassia trees, and trumpet-flower trees in full bloom.

BJT 60That foremost heavenly mansion, endowed with beauty, graced with such regions of land, shines brilliantly. Here, this accomplished result belongs to that deed. Those of merit who have acted attain such as this.

BJT 61On account of that, I have such a complexion. On account of that, (this state of affairs) has been accomplished for me here. And (on account of that) pleasing enjoyments arise for me.

BJT 62Venerable monk of great majesty, I declare to you the meritorious deed I performed when I was a human being. On account of that I have such majesty, shining brilliantly like this, and my complexion illuminates all the directions."
