– STORIES OF HEAVENLY MANSIONS

– B. HEAVENLY MANSIONS OF MALE DEVAS

– THE PĀYĀSI CHAPTER

6.3

BJT 1061"This heavenly mansion is lofty, with pillars of maṇi-jewels, extending sixteen leagues on all sides, with seven hundred magnificent pinnacled dwellings having pillars of beryl, spread over with gold, beautiful.

BJT 1062There you reside, you drink, and you eat. There are also divine vīṇā lutes giving forth sweet sounds. There are eight groups, each of eight celestial nymphs, dwelling in the realm of the Thirty-Three, magnificent, accomplished in their training, of graceful bearing, dancing, singing, and performing entertainments.

BJT 1063You have attained the supernormal powers of the devas, of great majesty. What meritorious deed did you do when you were a human being? On account of what do you have such majesty, blazing with radiance, and your complexion shining in all directions?"

BJT 1064That young deva, delighted when questioned by the Venerable Moggallāna, being asked the question, explained which deed had brought about this fruit:

BJT 1065"A giver of fruit obtains abundant fruit when giving with a pure mind to those who have practised diligently; that very person, having gone to the heavenly realm, rejoices in the realm of the Thirty-Three. O great wise one, in just the same way, I offered four fruits, and I enjoy abundant merit.

BJT 1066Therefore, it is more than enough for one who seeks happiness to give fruit regularly—whether one is wishing for heavenly happiness, or desiring a state of human prosperity.

BJT 1067On account of that, I have such a complexion. On account of that, all this has been accomplished for me here. And on account of that, pleasing enjoyments arise for me.

BJT 1068O bhikkhu of great majesty, I have told you about the meritorious deed I performed when I was a human being. On account of that I have such majesty, blazing with radiance, and my complexion shines in all directions."
